Moving beneficial bacteria to another tank

I may be at that point already as things look quite murky, but I quite like it. I'm hoping gouramis and peacock gudgeon gobies will be OK with it too. It shouldn't last forever as the wood will eventually stop leaching them.

Please let us know if you work out what has caused it.

Moving beneficial bacteria to another tank

I've finally decided to leave the mixed media in place temporarily - it is removing some of my tannins from wood decor to keep them at a reasonable level - but replace it a little at a time after my tank is cycled. I have bought some standard filter sponge to cut and add piecemeal over time. I...

Recommendations nitrate removal from tap water

I am starting to worry that the phosphate levels (still to be tested once I get the kit but the water company add phosphorus) and nitrate levels might push me to start using RO water. Obviously I don't want to be doing that if at all possible.

It would be lovely to do that. I have names for the gouramis, partly thanks to my daughter and the game 'who's your Daddy?'. They will be called Fork and Socket.

Another question: what do you do with your dead fish?

I would expect gut bacteria to win the day eventually and rot them from the inside out.

    Serpentinite rock in freshwater tank

Thanks for replying! I had tried looking at the chemistry and saw magnesium and silicates were involved. Your idea of a test in water sounds good. I'll dechlorinate it and treat it to plenty of wide ranging testing. I'd really like it to go in my tank and be safe. It has sentimental value.

    Help - Betta Fin Rot

How has the betta coped with it? Is everything peaceful or are there squabbles? It might be that the introduction of the catfish has led to the betta being stressed and so having a lowered immunity/resistance to illness. @Colin_T 's recommendations should help manage the problem now but the...

Recommendations nitrate removal from tap water

I have 4 to 16 ppm nitrates in my tap water. Assuming it occasionally/frequently comes out at 16 ppm (I live in a very agricultural area) it would leave little leeway for nitrates in the tank. I have seen there are various filters, and what I assume to be binders like Seachem De*Nitrate, but am...

Could you remind them you haven't been vaccinated and have done all you can think of doing that might be safe? Let them know that you have done 80 hours already. Then ask if they have any suggestions that would be safe for someone unvaccinated? With any luck, if they've already let somene else...

    Serpentinite rock in freshwater tank

Does anyone know if serpentinite rock is safe for a freshwater tank? Will it leach anything unhelpful or change the water parameters? I'm hoping to put a rock of it in with honey gouramis and peacock gudgeon gobies.

Another question: what do you do with your dead fish?

I've always put my dead pets (rats, chickens etc.) in the bin, but it always seems rather heartless. I can't bury them or the dogs would have them up in a jiffy!

    Bad town water?

If grocery store water is the same as bottled water I would guess you should check the mineral contents before using it, amongst all the usual parameters. Won't it cost a bomb?!

Thoughts on Nitrate Levels and Water Changes

I thought fewer, larger changes would be better, but then found that my very soft water would benefit from frequent smaller changes to minimise shifts in pH. So I guess for some people that would need to be taken into account rather than focusing on nitrates. I know that isn't the point of your...
