Fresh v salt: cycling saltwater through a freshwater external filter

Things are just dandy. I ran out of NT Labs ammonia test fuid but the nitrite and nitrate are still at zero. Instead of buying more ammonia bottles of fluids I opted for a Seachem Ammonia alert round strip thingy. It lasts a year and is a lot less expensive then buyin the NT Labs bottles. I...

Fresh v salt: cycling saltwater through a freshwater external filter

So far, the external canister filter tank, flushed out and filled with saltwater in a tank with lots of rocks, indicated extremely high amonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. I added a large amount of live marine bacteria and left things as they were except for a small amount of flake food. Things...

Fresh v salt: cycling saltwater through a freshwater external filter

Briefly - I have made a start on going into a marine tank. I have bought a good number of rocks, not live, though some will have a small amount of "life" in them as I hung them into the sea for a fortnight. I have these in a small tank with shop bought saltwater to condition them. I am using an...

    What's your favorite filter media

The mention of "sump" in the original question leads to it being a marine tank. I guess anyway, since not many freshwater tanks use a sump. In that case the issue is rather more different. Filtration as discussed, is for the collection of detritus and of course, for the build up of beneficial...

Question about a lonely Endler's livebearer

He thinks he's a guppy. They do breed together so if you have male guppies he may well be going for dominance. And the females? Well, he'll have a twinkle in his eyes

    Lid or no lid?

The endler is probably the only one prone to escape the tank. I've lost a few of them. The others should be OK. If you want quick plant cover then try water lettuce. If it gets going you'll end up selling the extra back to the LFS

    Just thinking about it

The tank in that clip isn't the one you think it is @AdoraBelle Dearheart It's a small tank by any standards at 21 ltrs. It's not their eventual home. I just got a few bits of rock to put them in there to condition to start saving them for the transfer to a bigger tank. That was done yesterday...

    WHAT ON EARTH

Durham eh? Which shop? I use both Fish Alive in Durham, and Tropical Supplies N.E. I prefer the latter for marine things, and Fish Alive for freshwater, after the amazing Horizon Aquatics at Newton Aycliffe. As for water collection I have now started buying the water. I was very pleasantly...

    WHAT ON EARTH

@Essjay + @Donya . Didn't know that a few stones of cricket ball size and a sandcastle amount of sand would amount to much. I normally have that much in my wellies after a days fishing. Anyway I won't be taking any more. I do have a bucketful of shop bought rocks secured in the breakwater...

What the heck even is this….

It never ceases to amaze me on the comments about what to stock in a tank. The usual comments are, "there are too many fish for the tank" - " you need a bigger tank" etc, and bettas seem to be largely ignored. To be honest I would buy any at all. I prefer something more natural, even if it's not...

    WHAT ON EARTH

I set up a small tank just to condition rocks ands sand before I transfer everything into another larger tank. As I just scooped up seawater and live rocks and sand direct from the beach, and a couple of small bits of seaweed, oh and a crab, nothing needed heat. Anyway, I've now set up a larger...

    Just thinking about it

I'm still working on my 135ltr tank (I thought it was 125ltr) but in the meantime I cleaned out the small tank that housed my Blue Eye redfin rainbowfish and turned it into saltwater. I was totally peed off with the rainbowfish. They showed no interest in breeding, the plants got out of hand...

    First Time Plant Purchase

I'd give them a quick dunk into a bleach solution. Once a bladder snail gets in the tank it'll multiply faster than you'd think possible. Then you have a hell of a job on your hands. If you have any smallish fish in the tank that you are hoping to breed then I'd add something like Hornwart or moss.

    Shrimp questions

When I do a water change, or a clean of the substrate I always drain into a bucket so I can remove anything that moves easier. Fluval 406 filter

I had the Fluval but the seal started leaking and then the pump to prime it gave up on me. Couldn't get the parts so also went with the SunSun with built in UV. Apart from the price difference there ain't much difference in the build of them, They are all modelled in the same way and get the job...

    Are we being conned?

Here;s the response. Most of the reagents are formulated and calibrated differently between marine and freshwater, you’re going to get the correct results using the ammonia and nitrate from the freshwater, however the pH results will be incorrect, as the freshwater reagent is not formulated to...

    Are we being conned?

I've just done the test as per NT Labs requirements of 1ml water to 5 drops from each of the 3 reagent bottles. There's no difference from my doing a 5ml sample to 5 drops of each reagent. The colour is still dark blue. Remember this only for the ammonia test.

    Are we being conned?

Thanks @Essjay I notice an immediate difference in the Ammonia test. The sample of water is at 1ml for marine, instead of 5 ml for freshwater. The number of drips is the same so I'll do another test and see what that shows. I have some fresh bottled seawater to try it out on. I wonder..... If...

How do you dry out used tank sand to save it for reuse?

I have dried a lot of sand/substrate lately. It all depends on how much you have but a typical amount from my own 120ltr tank is only a few pounds in weight. I put it in a container and microwave it. Not only does it dry the stuff, it also kills any potentially dangerous bacteria thay may...

Finally, the world goverments begin to admit the UFOs.

Way too many discepancies to take it as read that aliens actually come to Earth in UFO's; even if they do exist somewhere. Accelaration such as displayed on those craft, would kill any living being of a sizable mass. Quite simply they'd be squashed to death from the sudden accelaration. The same...

I can't see any requirement for a chiller. The north-east of England isn't what you'd call hot enough to impact on a home aquarium. On the beneficial bacteria front, I collected more sand from in between high and low tide marks yesterday, along with a small crab and more fresh sea water. I'll...

    Filter and bio media

Look at this 2 ways. 1st is the removal of detritus. This is done when the water goes through filter media such as floss, sponges etc. As long as what you use is toxic free you can use whatever you want. I use various stuff depending on the size of the tank. For instance I have a tank that I use...

    Are we being conned?

Like,,,, Hell no. Apart from the fact that I ain't gonna dip my hand into that stuff, it isn't what the local coastline has where I collected the sample. I do think, though, that if there is a high level of ammonia in the local area sea, then there'd be a mass die out of fish. There was a recent...

    Are we being conned?

Well here's their response. We would always recommend using the marine test kit, as they are buffered and calibrated differently to the freshwater test kit, although the results will be similar, so should give you enough of an idea as to the quality of your water. I would highly recommend...
