    Which digital thermometer?

Except for during monsoon season. ;)

    Guppy breeding question

In that case the effort is a matter of having a good harem of females for the male and a place for the little ones to be protected. Clean water and good quality food and the guppies will do the rest.

    Which digital thermometer?

Ha! Obviously we're dry most of the time, being a desert and all. But for about 3 months we have monsoons storms. Very powerful! https://www.google.com/search?q=arizona+monsoon&rlz=1C1GGGE___US549US549&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiw__OpqZDSAhVCyVQKHWiZAO8Q_AUICSgC&biw=1920&bih=950

    Which digital thermometer?

It's not bad most of the time but we get over 115 in the summer and in the winter we have swings of temps from day to night. You can be wearing shorts during the day and freeze to death at night in the winter. Crazy! But in the dead of summer it will be 100 degrees at midnight.

    Which digital thermometer?

I ended my use of them by buying heaters with built in. But, my case is a bit different than others. Living in Arizona, a desert, I don't have to worry about my tank getting too cold and in the summer the AC is always on so I never have to worry about them getting too hot either.

New Marine RR94 Setup Advice Required; please have a quick read

It's not likely the trace of copper in tap water will be sufficient to cause issues with coral growth. All of these marine animals require some copper so unless your area is crazy with it then don't worry. Over time the copper will reduce so you could still grow corals then. Here's a list of...

    Which digital thermometer?

I've had really bad luck with digital thermometers. Even the brand name ones haven't lasted for me. But, I would rather buy a new one every year than deal with a standard one. I really like the digital readout and for me being able to put the probe in and the until elsewhere is a big plus. My...

    Guppy breeding question

It kind of depends on what you mean by "breed". If you mean get them to have babies, that's pretty easy. But if you mean you want to actually breed them and create a stable strain etc. That is a different matter and takes a great deal of work. To breed for a strain you have to choose carefully...

Forum Software Conversion Happening - Pretty Much Now!

You're welcome. We'll see if we can't get them fixed in place or moved up. It's a hugely useful tool for people and helps keep the conversations going.

They are there, just down on the page. Not a very good location at all and they don't really come up until you have scrolled a ton. Maybe we can fix that. If you can't see anything on the right there is an arrow that shows/hides that column.

Forum Software Conversion Happening - Pretty Much Now!

Yup. It's a process. There are a lot of nice little features the old software didn't have though. For example, this one saves a quick draft. I accidentally clicked out of a page, in the old software that would have lost me my post, but when I clicked back it was there.

    Lighting For 2Ft Deep Tanks

LED's have good penetrating power. I run LED's on both of my reef tanks. My lights are 1foot above the tank and the tank is 30 inches deep. I get good coral growth with that on the bottom. All that just means that LED's can get down there.  But the issue then becomes PAR.    I've not used your...

Hey everybody! The board is going to be getting all new software. We're leaving IP Board and going to a new system called XenForo.    You will still be able to chat and communicate through private messages (they'll have a new name) but we'll be able to present the information in an easier to...

I Guess I'll Share One Too! Microscopic World

I'm going to be one soon where I slice of a tiny bit of anemone and look at the stinging cells under the microscope. I will also be burning some pest anemone with a new laser I just got. Weeeeee!

    Fish In Cycle

Fish in with plants is a method I've used many times and which I do advocate for. The idea is simple, the plants consume exactly what the fish find harmful and the fish produce just what the plants need. It's similar to using live rock and sand in a reef tank.    The thing to watch for is simply...

    My Fish Room

I don't think I would have a black water tank as my only tank but as one of a few it would be a very nice change of pace.

I Guess I'll Share One Too! Microscopic World

It is kind of crazy with all the eating, pooping, claws, hairs, and mystery things. That's all in a few drops of water.

I Guess I'll Share One Too! Microscopic World

This video is part of a series I did but this one is one of my favorites. I took the clownfish food and put it under the microscope. I didn't really know everything I was looking at and made some wrong guesses but that's okay, it's still cool to look at.    https://youtu.be/G9HNEIqnFwI

My wife hates them...I mean hates them...but I love them. I think there is something very unique and natural about them. I also respect the effort it takes to have one and do it right.

New Youtube Forum To Show Off In

For years the forum has restricted the posting of YouTube videos to very particular circumstances. This was done to avoid the site becoming a place for people to just advertise their YouTube channels while not actually joining our community. Over time, especially recently, we have noticed more...

Don't Listen To My Own Advice

I get around that impulse thing by just advising not to buy a fish you don't know to take care of. Then I go learn about every fish I possibly can so when I see him I'm ready to buy.    Post picture!

Protein Skimmer Has Crack (Will This Solution Work)

For me I would likely use the black aquarium silicone. However, if another option is acrylic weld which would bind the acrylic at a molecular level.

    I Think I Want A Betta ;-)

If you think you want a betta then you DO want a betta. ;)   11 gallons is great. Just make sure any filtration you use doesn't flow too fast. Betta are a lower flow fish.    As for a window sill that depends on a few factors. At my house I have double pane low-e windows with a UV blocking...

    Emergency Advice Needed!

^This.  I've done many deep water changes. Unless a person lets the tank go actually dry it won't be an issue. It's not really necessary to do a 100% change and like I said there are other good reasons not to, but bacteria isn't a reason to worry about.
  30. Chad

    Emergency Advice Needed!

Just making sure. You made this statement which made it sound like you thought that was the case.
  31. Chad

    Emergency Advice Needed!

The vast majority of the bacterial filtration is not in the water column but on substrate, filtration media, plants, etc. The bacteria in the water itself isn't enough to make a major difference.    However, a 100% water change CAN cause issues in water parameters. If one is going to do a 100%...

    Glowlights Dropping Like Flies

I can see why you might think that but in actuality they aren't immediate but usually take days or longer. This is even true with very sensitive marine creatures like sea stars. They may not begin to show signs of "acclimation sickness" for 5 days. By the time they do it's usually too late...

    Glowlights Dropping Like Flies

If pH is good (it's within their happy zone) and they aren't new to the tank then you got me. If they are new to the tank then my thoughts are towards too quick of an acclimation. This is a fish that is particularly sensitive to changes in water.

    Glowlights Dropping Like Flies

I'm not sure how long you have had them but I have found this is a species that does best when very slowly acclimated.    What is the pH in your tank?   He's talking about glowlight tetras not the tetras that glow.
  36. Chad

    Oh Yeah! Score!

Right! That would be terrific. I would enjoy seeing the long term progress of this from cleaning up and making it all work to adding the fish and caring for them, how you do water changes etc. There's a lot of interesting work that will go into that I think everyone can learn from.

    Oh Yeah! Score!

Wow, that's a crazy price on that thing. Instant proper fish room.

My Diy Background-- Having Second Thoughts....

If you cut the backdrop so that it doesn't go all the way down it will leave room for the substrate to be against the glass and not against the backdrop. That way removing it would be simple and not require breaking anything down or really disturbing much at all.
  39. Chad

My Diy Background-- Having Second Thoughts....

There's no doubt at all that it would be hard to maintain. No doubt at all. But you might want to give it a try and maybe if you keep the flow pointed at it then you might not have as much of an issue as you think.

My Diy Background-- Having Second Thoughts....

Magnets. You can embed them in the back so it sits flush. They sell encased magnets that are water proof. I have several of them I use for various purposes in my tank. They can handle the salt water no problem because they are entirely enclosed in plastic.
