    Hospital Tank Setup How To's?

The reason for not having the decor is that it can often act as a hiding place for parasites and detritus both of which you don't want in a hospital tank. PVC is a non porous material and is easy to clean too.

    Spontaneous Generation Shrimp?

The betta will certainly eat the fry. However, if you provide a place for them to hide many of them will survive. I have kept adults with betta and the fish left them alone but smaller shrimp are on the menu.

    Spontaneous Generation Shrimp?

That's a cherry shrimp. They are one of the Neocaridina shrimp. They are sort of the shrimp version of livebearers in that their young hatch looking just like the adult with no external larval stage. They are very very tiny when they hatch.

    Guppy With No Tail...what Now?

I agree with Wilder. Some fin damage will certainly grown back but once it gets to a certain point the damage is done and also a larger wound opens the fish up to bacterial infection. But, I generally find that if a fish is eating there is a chance. If it won't eat then it's too far gone. In the...

    Hospital Tank Setup How To's?

I recommend a bare bottom tank with zero decorations. Use PVC as a hiding place for the fish. Like the one shown below. This makes working in the tank easier, helps reduce clean up and algae, and leaves no place for parasites to hide.    You can use filter media from the main tank on the...

    Switching From Tank To Bowl

I'm in the same boat as you being in Arizona a heater isn't necessary. My house is climate controlled and stays constant year round. It's one of the perks of living in the desert. I keep a heater in my tank "just in case" but it never actually turns on.    As a side note, going from a 5 gallon...

Filtration Filtration Filtration , To Much ? Your Opinion Wanted

There is such a thing as too much flow, which can be caused by the filter output, but you can't have too much filtration (absent chemical filtration) because the bacteria is limited by the nutrients.

    How Popular Are Crawfish/crayfish?

Agreed! I'll eat just about anything dead from the sea. I just did a trip to San Francisco and loved eating food that had just been pulled out of the bay. If you can't get fresh seafood then I say don't eat it, it's not the same. But if you can, yum!

    How Popular Are Crawfish/crayfish?

As far as I'm concerned they are very popular. They were one of the first things I kept as a child. The modern interest is really in the more colorful crayfish. Your standard creek "crawdads" are mostly eaten and a few people enjoy keeping them. They aren't something I think you would make money...

    Another New Species To Desire!

I'm sure things will settle in terms of species names. That usually doesn't get hashed out fully until DNA is done.

    Another New Species To Desire!

That's one of the things I really like about them. They have the look of an emperor tetra without the size.

    Another New Species To Desire!

I love tetra, pretty much all of them...no, not pretty much...all of them! The idea of a new species excites me. I wonder how long before this beauty makes it into the hobby.    http://www.advancedaquarist.com/blog/a-new-unique-hyphessobrycon

Feeding Different Species In Same Tank

That's a very good point. I'm glad you picked up on that one! I missed it, didn't even think of it, but it's so true.

Feeding Different Species In Same Tank

Feeding multiple species can be quite an issue in a mixed tank. Some fish will be more aggressive and eat all the food meant for others. Luckily many species do thrive on the same food types. So sometimes you have to trick the fish by placing food at one end, then the other, by placing some food...

Let's Have A Debate On Betta Tank Size.

It's not quite the same. All fish love living in water and each species has it's built in habitat. Also, we aren't quite sure that fish "like" anything. Though there are some species (like puffers) that seem to be more intelligent most fish, as far as we currently know scientifically, don't have...

Let's Have A Debate On Betta Tank Size.

Yes, that's it. I realize it's an odd way of phrasing it but it's important that it's not just minimum tank size. We all know that can be a cup, but that's not optimum. What is the size in which the fish is most likely to thrive? I've said for a while now that it's the 5-6 gallon range. One of...

Let's Have A Debate On Betta Tank Size.

Ha! So we are!    Narrowing it down to the topic fish I think finnage, color, eye clarity, feeding, nest building, and inquisitiveness (exploring territory) are signs of thriving.

Let's Have A Debate On Betta Tank Size.

For fatness I specifically have certain fish in mind that I commonly see too thin. Seeing them robust and healthy makes it so obvious they are doing well. Tangs of course come to mind, as do mandarin, white cloud mountain minnows, clown loaches, and a few others that really wear their health in...

Let's Have A Debate On Betta Tank Size.

Fatness, activity, fin condition, scale condition, the ability to defend itself and/or compete for resources in the tank. I've seen yellow tangs that are surviving and when you compare them to one that is thriving it's easy to quantify the difference.

Let's Have A Debate On Betta Tank Size.

I'll say it first because someone is going to...we want our fish to thrive...not just survive. ;)

    Alternative Foods For Minnows

I fed mine daphnia twice a week. I fed them hikari flake the rest of the time and fasted them once a week.

Let's Have A Debate On Betta Tank Size.

I wonder how much surface area plays a role for a labyrinth fish. Would a shallower shape work better than the classic bowl as long as it had more surface area? Could you keep a beta in a casserole dish?

Let's Have A Debate On Betta Tank Size.

Your post reminded me of a couple of things I hadn't thought of in relation to this topic, 1. tank mates (I assumed a solitary betta) and 2. aquascape. Plants and other areas that provide territory will often keep a betta put even in a larger tank.

How Much To Feed My Fish

As for the question how much to feed them, fish are, in my opinion, frequently overfed. They love to eat so much, and we love to watch them, that we sometimes allow the joy we feel to overshadow the practical realities of their metabolisms. But that doesn't give you a definitive answer. Because...

Let's Have A Debate On Betta Tank Size.

I think that's where the video in the article goes wrong, as does the author. It shows fish in small spaces, but it's clear they didn't originate there but rather got stuck there.

I still wouldn't have done it. ;) That's been my experience as well. I've also gotten greater longevity as a result.

Let's Have A Debate On Betta Tank Size.

Can you be a little more specific as to what size that would be and maybe share your thoughts on why that size is okay? Since I started the post it's US gallons. ;) I realized that this issue would come up when I created the poll but to be honest I was too lazy to Google the conversions.

My Torch & Polops Wont Open

I've kept 2.5 gallon, 5.5 gallon, 10, 20, 29, 50, 75, and 210 gallon reef tanks. I don't consider torch to be a difficult coral, it's in the upper beginner range. Most certainly they are temperamental when it comes to flow.    So I agree with the above and would add that they will shrink from...

Betta Buying Advice For A Newbie

Personally I like to see and observe a fish before I buy it so while a fish (especially a betta) will ship you get what they send you. If that's okay with you then online will work. Since I'm in the US I won't be able to give you a UK online resource.    Betta are very popular and a great fish...

Well...I think so...it's all new so I think we'll have to wait and see. Don't run around liking things just to find out though. ;) That would water down the results.
