Driftwood Fungus is taking over my tank!

Hi! I have a piece of driftwood that grew driftwood fungus almost immediately about 6 weeks ago. I looked around online and was told to leave it be and it'll go away. Well, it hasn't gone away and has now appeared to spread to my plants. I also have a very thick biofilm that my 3 gardneri...

    Mystery Snail Losing Shell?

I have 4 mystery snails in a 5 gallon vertical with my betta, Cheesecake. Temp is about 78 degrees F, parameters are 0/0/15. pH is around 6.4. Soft water around 50 ppm.Betta is fed daily, but the tank is fully planted so I only feed the snails every 2-3 days. They get homemade snello, which has...

    Travelling with Fish?

Hi! I'm moving back to college about 3 hours away and want some advice on how to transport them. I have 3 gardneri killifish and 6 corycats in my 10 gallon, and one betta and 4 mystery snails in my 5 gallon. Both tanks are heavily planted and cycled. Where I am now, water is very soft (don't...

How do you clean play sand??

After about 2 hours of struggling, I’m about to give up. I put it in without cleaning because I’m a beginner, now I’ve emptied EVERYTHING. How do I clean play sand so it doesn’t cloud up so bad? Thanks

    I promised a killifish update!

Help! I bought play sand and didn’t realize I had to clean it. Now I’ve had to completely empty my tank, including the fluval stratum because it turned the water PITCH BLACK. Now, please help me on how to clean the play sand so I don’t have to spend another 2 hours on this. Thanks!

    I promised a killifish update!

You’re right! These are older pictures.. they are definitely fat now though. Not sure if you can see one of them in this pic, but it was taken yesterday. I do have eggs but no fry yet! Hopefully in a few weeks I will have some babies!

    I promised a killifish update!

Hey! So it's been a few weeks since my last post about the killifish tank, but they've been here over a week, and doing great! I am currently having a bacterial bloom issue but it's not severe. I know my killis are too fat, but I'm already cutting down as per the breeder's advice. They breed...

    Substrate Help

Hi! This is my 10 gallon killifish and corycat tank. Everyone is doing well, but I'm having trouble with my plants! I thought I'd really like fluval stratum but I don't... the plants won't stay put. Even in my other tank with 3+ inches of substrate, I'm constantly having to replant. Is there a...

    First 10 gallon planted tank!

Oh ok! The killifish will be gardneri, yes, so I’ll just leave the pH alone.

    First 10 gallon planted tank!

Tank without any chemicals sits around 6.0
  23. newmag1659

    First 10 gallon planted tank!

I do have very soft water, around 50 ppm. Tap water is around 6.6 fresh and 6.2 after sitting. I check pH every other day and dose as necessary. I went out of town for part of the week and the person feeding my fish forgot to check pH, thus why it was so low when I came back.
  24. newmag1659

    First 10 gallon planted tank!

I’ve been testing water and the only thing is that my pH is low, slowly dosing it back up everyday. That’s an issue with the city water though, not the tank. Thanks!

    First 10 gallon planted tank!

I did a planted cycle for about a week with already cycled filter media before adding 6 little corys yesterday

    First 10 gallon planted tank!

Ok! I think the cloudiness is mostly a substrate issue, but I’m sure there’s some algae making it that way too. I also have a UV light that’s supposed to kill algae, but I’ve not used it before. Either way, I’ll probably give it a few days before trying anything.
  27. newmag1659

    First 10 gallon planted tank!

Yes, the water is a bit cloudy because the substrate is Fluval stratum which kicks up and clouds the tank when you add new plants. I’m thinking of dosing the tank with API algae fix but I’m concerned it could harm the plants or fish. What do you think?

    First 10 gallon planted tank!

This is my second tank ever and will soon have a couple pairs of killifish (gardneri)! Currently there's six little corycats in there and they love the plants. It's stocked with: various floaters, cabomba, java moss, wisteria, two amazon swords, rotala indica, ludwigia repens, pearlweed, and...

Help a gal brand new to Killifish out!

Oh man, when I'm not a poor college student, maybe I'll try saltwater one day, but I've definitely heard some horror stories. Instead of eggs, I've actually found a guy that's local (sorta, like 2-3 hours), that breeds killifish and is apparently an expert! He's offered to sell me a pair of...

Well I don't have any cories yet, so I might end up doing eggs and trying to raise some up. Otherwise I'll probably go with the American Killifish Association

Help a gal brand new to Killifish out!

Thank you for such an in-depth response! My only issue now is finding somewhere to buy them (the gardneris)! The only place I've found so far is two hours away and they still might not have any. Should I buy eggs on ebay? Where the heck can I find some live? The only place online I could find...
