External Filter, What To Get?! Confused...

Hello again!! I have been looking at the externals too! Got another external to throw at you! I have a 90 litre tank and was looking at the Tetra Tec ex700. They do another one for larger tanks called the Tetra Tec ex 1200. I have had a look at reviews online and they do get quite good reviews...

Upgrading Tank - Need Some Confirmation/help!

No worries! I have been thinking of upgrading my filter to an external one next month. Talking to other more experienced members on this forum, the general consensus is that external filters are far superior! I think they are more powerful, more media for filtration (producing crystal clear...

Upgrading Tank - Need Some Confirmation/help!

Welcome to the forum You should be able to put the media from your old filter straight into your new one. If it isn't the right shape, just chop it up! Your filter will then be cycled. I am assuming that the new filter is bigger, so the extra media will soon be colonised by the good bacteria...

    Pleco Acting Strange!

I have to agree with Xingumike. Your problems are linked to overstocking and the small size of tank. Due to their small size, it doesn't take a lot to put it out of kilter. Is there just a bio bag in your filter? No sponges? There really is very little ammonia/nitrite changing bacteria in your...

    Pleco Acting Strange!

Hi Blue I'm new to all this fish keeping and I won't comment on your tank! You say you have changed your filter. Was the tank originally cycled? By that, I mean have you gone through the nitrogen cycle and established a nice colony of bacteria in your filter media that changes lethal ammonia...

    Yamato Shrimp

I have a question about Yamato Shrimps. I have 6 in my Roma 90 tank and they have been pretty sedate for the month or so that I have had them. However, tonight, 3 of them have gone mad swimming circles around the tank. I immediately did a water test (I seem to do this whenever I see something...

    Amano Shrimp & Ottos

Hi Meejo Not from the NW, but I just bought some yamato shrimp, another name for Amano, from Pets at Home. If you have one near you, I am pretty sure they would sell them in all their shops. I don't recall seeing Ottos there though. You could always ring them to ask to save a waisted trip...

    Upgrading To An External Filter

I will need to check whether I can shut the rear lid properly where the 2 cut outs are. Will have a look at the JBL if you can on yours. I want it to look as tidy as possible (well the wife does anyway!!) Many thanks! Almost and Minnnt. Thanks for correcting me! There are a lot of products to...

    Cardinal Tetra

Just wanted a bit of behavioural advice on the CT please! I have 10 in a shoal. I got them in 2 batches, 6 and then 4. The 4 pretty much schooled with the others straight away, which I didn't expect. They have been in the tank nearly a month now but seem to pretty much do what they want rather...

Swapping From Internal Filter To External Filter

I have a similar post somewhere here too. From what I have had explained you can just bung all your media from the internal filter into your external and technically you are immediately cycled! Easy as that! I wouldn't check out the internal but keep it as a spare. My internal died on me last...

    Gravel Is So Dirty!

I agree. I have some cory's scuttling about on my gravel too. It's a black, smoothly rounded type gravel and they keep it reasonably clean! I realised once I bought the cory's that I may have done the wrong thing and might damage their tentacles, however they are perfectly happy and don't stop...

    New Filter

Checked the tank when I got home and all is well! I was a bit parranoid that the transfer of media wouldn't work, so tested the water: Ammonia 0.0ppm Nitrite 0.0ppm Nitrate 10ppm All good, so thanks for reassuring me in my crisis (well its one for me anyway!!) :hyper:

    New Filter

Essjay & Zozzyzod I thought it was dead, but I shall try both your methods when I get home from work. It would be useful to have a spare filter, so hopefully I can get it working. I am pretty happy with the U3 though, as the water definatly seemed clearer this morning. Hopefully it will still...

    Poorly Honey Dwarf Gourami :(

It could well be swim bladder and your fish certainly has some characteristics. DG's have continuously been inbred and swim bladder is one of the genetic malfunctions of this, so it could be a bit of both. I am not really aware of any cure for DG disease or swim bladder, so be prepared, I am...

    Poorly Honey Dwarf Gourami :(

Hi bonking I am afraid I think your DG is suffering from dwarf gourami disease. This was made aware to me by another member in a thread after one of mine (now 2) went the same way and there isn't a lot you can do. It is caused, from my understanding, by the DG's being continually inbred, I...

    New Filter

Thanks Delta. All seems to be ok this morning. I managed to reduce the flow through the middle spray bar so it is coming through half of one set of holes. This still appears to be more powerful than the U2!! However, the water has never looked clearer do pretty happy overall.......and the...

    New Filter

I am pretty new to fish keeping and had my first crisis this evening while doing maintenance on my tank. My Fluvial U2 filter broke, no idea why. Unplugged and took out to give a rinse and give the media a quick rinse in some tank water in a bucket. I left everything in the bucket (not the...

Turquoise Dwarf Gourami Suddenly Passed Away. :(

Hi Snowman I am not really sure why your Gourami has died, but I do know it's not uncommon as they seem to be quite fragile fish and this isn't an uncommon problem as you will see in other Gourami related threads. What do you mean by changing yor filter medium? If you mean buying new medium...
