    Betta sick again.

He already had it when I bought him, he was in with shrimp and snails only in my main tank, then I quarantined other fish to add in and all of them are very healthly and never showed signs of illness.

    Betta sick again.

I will try to get good pictures of him, it's quite hard when he keeps moving all the time and my phone doesn't take the best pictures either. Every 2 weeks, I squish it in old tank water. Weekly, around 30% Yes, I vaccum half of the tank and then the other half on the next water change. I...

    Betta sick again.

There are previous posts about his issues, but here it is once again. Rescued this betta on January. He was skinny with a ripped tail and a bump on his face that had white stuff in it. I was advised to treat with antiparasitic medicine since it wasn't fluffy, it wasn't ich either, and he didn't...

They are better than males but can still show aggression. You could try a dwarf or honey gourami maybe?

    Betta with others

I keep mine with habrosus cories, harlequin rasboras, cherry shrimp and snails. He has killed a few shrimp but on the most part he doesn't really bother them, they don't hide. He completely ignores the snails and cories. The harlequins don't even school that tight so he is fine with them too...

    Two dead Bettas...

I just remembered something I wanted to say! I have seen better results with TNC when I split the recommended dosage into portions and dose daily instead of just once every week. Your tank is 25L so you could dose 1ml of TNC 2-3 times per week.

I think Essjay mentioned to raise the ammonia to 1ppm, I would do a bigger water change and then raise the ammonia back to 1ppm and then add the filter starter, you won't need water changes after that unless the ammonia and nitrite is way too high.

That's great! You can dose the filter starter everyday now to help build the bacteria colony. :D

    Two dead Bettas...

I think it will be fine once you cycle and get a couple of shrimp to make sure everything is running smoothly. If I come across a reliable store to get bettas from I will let you know. Keep us updated!

    Two dead Bettas...

There are so many fish I would love to keep but I have only 2 tanks atm one 70L community tank and the 2nd one is a small shallow tank that has only plants and some shrimp for the betta that is in the 70L in case he goes on a killing spree or starts struggling with swimming. So technically one...

    Two dead Bettas...

I forgot to add that you need to keep your filter running so there is some water surface agitation (always low flow for bettas) since the beneficial bacteria need oxygen.

    Two dead Bettas...

Maybe keep for now, they will help with the cycling too, I would remove them afterwards since they multiply like crazy. Add a couple of shrimp after the cycling is done. The betta might or might not bother them, depends on the character of the fish. Even mine that ignores them most of the time...

    Two dead Bettas...

That was my thought, since they are so sensitive, if they survive then the water is fine for fish

    Two dead Bettas...

@Essjay What if Lou cycled the tank and then got a shrimp before a betta, I know the GH is too high for them but it could be a good way to see if there is something wrong after the cycling, At least I know from mine that if there is something wrong they go nuts.

Looks like a bladder snail, they breed like crazy, make sure you don't overfeed or you will end up with thousands of them.

Maybe go for a plakat betta next time? I think they are not as overbred as the long finned ones yet.

You could mix RO with tap water to make it softer, my area has very high gh too, so I remineralise RO, the stores around my area all use treated tap water and the bettas are ok and from what I read bettas don't have a huge issue with the gh(soft water is better though), the only negative I found...

    I don't even know anymore

It sounds like a great plan. Make sure you add a filter with slow flow, HOB (add a filter intake sponge so his fins don't get sucked in) or sponge filter.

    Two dead Bettas...

I have bought snails and cherry shrimp from ebay, and they are doing great, they posted them with the 1day delivery service and even with covid delays etc I received them the next day and they put a heat pad in the package to keep them warm.

I am not really happy with MA or PaH near me either, I've seen quite a few unhealthy fish in both stores. How about buying a betta from ebay or siambetta? There are some gorgeous fish in various prices, if anyone has experience, this might be a good option for @NannaLou.

How full is the tank? Is there space between the lid and the water line? ( Just to make sure that they had enough space to breathe)

    Two dead Bettas...

I personally didn't have problems with water changes, but I made sure it is the same source and same temperature as the tank water and poured it in slowly. You could do smaller water changes just to be safe but from what I read it seems that if there is ammonia, small water changes won't help...

    Two dead Bettas...

What did you clean the tank with before filling it up with water? Just water? Did you use any chemicals like soap or bleach? The snails can stay in they will produce waste to start the cycle. With fish in cycle you need to add the NL lab starter for as long as the directions suggest on the box...

    Two dead Bettas...

I have no experience with this brand, but it looks like it is fine, the filter starter it mentions is the beneficial bacteria BUT if there is no ammonia, then the bacteria have no food so they will die off. Maybe the ammonia was 0 because the plants consumed it. I am not an expert by any means...

    Two dead Bettas...

With no ammonia, beneficial bacteria won't appear. If there are no beneficial bacteria there is nothing to eat the ammonia and nitrites (these are the most toxic ones for fish). How the cycle works: 1. You add ammonia 2. Nitrosomas bacteria start reproducing, eat the ammonia and convert it to...

Fluval U4 - How often should you change the sponges?

Don't forget that you need to clean the sponges in old tank water, so you don't kill the beneficial bacteria. Easiest way to do it is when you do your weekly water change. Just squish the sponges several times in that water.

How big did your bettas get?

I got my boy on January, he was just 1inch in length and now he is 2inches (body length, excluding fins). Either I am doing something right or he might end up being a king betta. He doesn't look small in the 18gal anymore :eek:

I ordered them fluval bottom feeder bug bites too. I lost another one an hour later. This one had a normal belly and again no signs of illness. I have tested the water 3 times, everything is normal. If there was something wrong, I would have noticed since my cherry shrimp start climbing a...

Best food to fatten up Corydoras Habrosus

Now that I think about it, they all had really short barbels and only one set when I bought them. Could this affect their ability to eat? Wish I noticed it at the store but they are so tiny that I couldn't see.

Best food to fatten up Corydoras Habrosus

Unfortunately, one of my cories died a few minutes ago, it was still breathing but there was nothing I could do, it was already sideways and not moving. There were no signs of disease, I noticed it had a sunken belly. The rest look fatter than this one was. They were quite skinny when I bought...
