I like that, presumably by using the plastic container you can let the water settle to room temperature before adding to the tank, much less temp diff than the cold tap.

Thank you for your reply, It's also three stage filter, here's the blurb: • Stage 1 5-micron polypropylene sediment pre-filter to extract suspended materials such as sediment, rust, insects, and other particles down to 5 micron. (Replace every 6 months) • Stage 2...

    Thanks Everyone!

That's fantastic. I'd be interested to hear how easy it is to keep the sand that clean!

    London nitrates

I've purchased a small RO unit (100GPD) that should be more than enough for my tank, which is 190 litres. Three questions, though: I had some intersting advice from a new LFS, which was to use max 75% RO and the rest tap water in order to keep some hardness in the tank so that pH is...

Looks like a great product - be interested to see how it effects your readings after a week.

    Python water changer

I've got a small, unused, filter at the bottom of my tank. A garden hose, only used for water changes, fits snugly onto the output from the filter. Once connected this pushes water out of the tank and onto the garden. I then connect the end that was in the garden to a mixer tap, and the...

Really? Won't the flow just push them to one end then they'll sit there? You can see where this has happened on my tank.

I'm looking into RO systems, birthday coming up soon! I'm the meantime I may let these cabbages go wild and let them bring down nitrates:

The cheapest is only £36, if it lasts six months that could be good. If only being used once per week it may even last longer. Certainly at that price I'm tempted to give it a try. Does it matter how many stages?

How much does it really cost to install and maintain RO? The option I was looking at, chlorine and nitrate filters only, was about £80 initially (plus some pipes) then £30 every six months to replace the filters.

Hi Paul - that looks lovely, do you still need a new home for it?
  16. mhancock

Any body up for a challenge??

Different thought, I've wondered if it would be possible to set up a tank with continuous and slow water coming in (from tap) and then out (to the veg patch) at such a rate that temperature is able to be stable, but that no other filtration or chemicals are needed.

    London nitrates

I've had the purigen in for nearly 18 hours now - it seems to be dropping the nitrate a bit. Be great if it does, as advertised, remove it completely:

    Disaster

Update is that London nitrates are up to 50mg/l, and averaging around 30 where I live - so I've no hope of bringing them down other than a specialist filter. I'm trying purigen to begin with, but mixed views in whether or not it actually reduces nitrate. Time will tell. Most of the fish have...

    is this white spot?

Temp changed now so tank with get warmer, sadly there's only one left and not looking great. Are they particularly effected by nitrate? I'll need to get something hardy that will cope with nitrate, hard water, and maybe warm water to prevent the tank cycling due to loss of stock. A could if...

    is this white spot?

It's been around 30, the thermometer is well away from the heater. I'll go a bit higher tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.

    is this white spot?

Hi there - 6 days on from the original post with water changes and temp at 30o, a couple of loaches have sadly passed away and one still has plenty of white spots. Is this to be expected? Thank you.
  23. mhancock

    Question about water changes

Presumably large changes don't effect the bacteria only if the new water is de-chlorinated?

It was that description that persuaded me to buy it - let's see what happens. Plan B would be a two cartridge filter system to remove Chlorine and Nitrate for water changes.

    London nitrates

I've ordered this, more than enough for my tank and could work for 6 months: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0002A5VK2/?tag= As it's only £11 if you don't need quick delivery, I'll just replace it rather than have the hassle, and more importantly risk, of using bleach. Given that nitrates are so...

    London nitrates

Oooh, jet pack! I've not heard of that before, just looked on Amazon. I guess you put it in the external filter? Seems odd that you'd clean something with bleach though and then put it back in the filtration system, if I've read that right....

It's a 4 foot tank, so I guess about 100l. At the moment just a small pleco, a platy, two cories and three small clowns. Do you think this would be ok? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0117A5TMU/?tag=

    London nitrates

Evening, I've had to post a couple of items about fish dying, which led me to purchase an API liquid test kit, which revealed high nitrate: After a bit of research I have my external filter a clean alongside 70% water change. Afterwards I rechecked and it's still 20-40ppm. I then began to...

So, this is interesting, I decided to test out some tap water, I really doubt that there's no chlorine in London, let alone the NO2 reading:

I've literally just done 80% water change a couple of hours ago. Will test tap water - maybe there's an issue with the testing strips. Yes, two airstones running constantly.

    Disaster

Thank you for taking the time to write all of that, very kind of you. The 30o is indeed to treat ich so it will only be that high for another 12 days. I'll test again tomorrow and see what the NO2 is, and am looking into liquid test kits: the API one does have great reviews!

    Disaster

I've just tried the tetra app, on some sticks I was given, and this data was after the 80% water change. The strips are in date, so I'm concerned about the NO2: 00
