    Online Fish Purchasing

I'd still recommend going through your LFS for fish. Usually you can just tell them what you want and have them order it. They'll just put it in with their next order, and it won't cost them anything more for shipping than it usually would. They make a profit, and you save $20 or so on...

    Sump media

I'd use live rock and either live sand or mineral mud.

    Sump media

Nitrifying bacteria, but no denitrifying bacteria. You'd end up with a lot of nitrates in your tank. Just bag it up and keep it for a future FW tank or something.

    Spousal abuse!!!

NO! Really? ;) He's the director and is lucky enough to avoid the tasks such as gargling fake blood, or getting it drooled in his ear....

Don't get an anemone. They're far more trouble than they're worth.

Looking into buying a Saltwater Tank. Need Help

If you want a LOT of fish.... and you want peaceful fish.... you're stuck with freshwater. In my 55g sw tank, I have 2 clowns, 2 watchman gobies, a royal gramma, a six line wrasse, and I'm getting a firefish..... and it will be fully stocked, as far as I'm concerned. On top of that, all of...

Ventured back into the freshwater section today

This morning, my neighbor finally convinced me to go check out a new LFS that has opened up a few miles away. He has fallen in love with my saltwater tank, and wants a coral-only nano reef for his house.... but that's a story for another thread. Anyway, I went in and looked around all the...

    Spousal abuse!!!

So this weekend I was "presented with an opportunity" (i.e. pretty much forced) to help a friend finally shoot a movie that he's been talking about for a while. Today was just the trailer, but still, he was really going all out with the bit of space we had and few people that showed up. I...

    fluval filter 204

Get both ends in the water. Make sure the grey lever is set so that water can pass through the valve. Pump... pump... pump.... pump some more. When you get a siphon started, you'll hear it and can stop pumping. You'll see lots and lots of air coming out of your outlet end when that happens...

    Just a little silly question

Yeah, requires a custom made tank to properly keep them. The tanks I've seen for jellyfish usually have a round front and some type of "s" shaped weir so that water comes under it, up the front of the tank to make a swirl, and empties over the top into an area with the pump. Hold on and I'll...

    need help (algae problems)

$.58 a gal is a huge ripoff. Find an LFS that has lots of saltwatwer stuff, and chances are they'll sell RO water for about $.25-.35 per gallon. All you have to do is ask, usually. Oh, and bring your own container :)

    What in tarnations is that?

I'd advise against plucking. If you have some kalkwasser, mix some up in water and leave it very chalky and milky. Inject it right on the mouth of the aiptasia, and it will wilt away and dissolve. If you pluck it and any bits of the flesh get suspended in the water column and washed to god...

    What in tarnations is that?

Some type of anemone.... most likely aiptasia.

    WOW! Naked hermit

Of all the things I've done with my tank, I think tonight takes the cake. I've watched my fish have their little symbiotic thing between a goby and a pistol shrimp, I've watched my clowns fight for dominance before eventually pairing up, I've had peppermint shrimp and cleaner shrimp climb all...

    Hi all

Unless it's slab foundation, I'd still check it. If you have a crawlspace foundation with standard floor joists.... it would probably do well to reinforce it.

    Meet Bob....

Well I finally got around to taking a better picture of the goby from my avatar. His name is Bob and he's a yellow watchman goby. He has a buddy in the tank... Bub.... but they won't pose together for more than a few seconds :(

    Mushrooms and stuff

Just a common blue legged hermit crab. That's all the local store stocks. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Di....cfm?pCatId=623 <-- not the local store, BTW :) And yes, everthing is as purple as the picture shows.

The Necessities for a SW Tank?

Powerheads are a yes, because you need water circulation over the live rock. Live rock is your primary biological filtration. External filters, like hang on back power filters..... no... you're actually better off without them. Gunk builds up, no anoxic capabilities for denitrification...

The Necessities for a SW Tank?

Actually, you're greatly overdoing it. Essentials.... hood light (at least Power Compacts) powerheads live rock heater hydrometer salt mix source of RO water aragonite sand (although some people run bare bottom quite successfully... asthetic choice) I ran my 20g tank for 6 months without a...

    what do corals eat?

I feed mine Kent Phytoplex, Two Little Fishies Marine Snow, Cyclopeeze, and my hammer coral will even eat mysis shrimp when I feed that to the fish.

    Sea Millipede???

Aye, bristleworm. Look at this page and see if that's what they look like. http://articles.uwphoto.no/oversikter/Mari...ristleworms.htm Oh, and whatever you do, DO NOT touch it. Nasty little bugger :(

    Question

Parker is close with #2, from what I know. In SW, anoxic bacteria grows that will convert nitrates to nitrogen and just outgas it. Occasionally you'll see a little bubble float up from your sand, if you have a deep enough sand bed. That's why. With a BioWheel, all your nitrifying bacteria...

    What spares do you have?

Naa... I don't have room for the pear tree in my house either! ;) Why you think that 40g isn't doing something useful, eh? ;)
  25. C

    What spares do you have?

10g, 40g long, 150w heater, a few powerheads, 2-3 various power filters that got "retired" when I converted to saltwater, 2 air pumps, and a Red Sea Berlin Airlift countercurrent skimmer that worked fine on my 20g but just didn't cut the mustard on my 55g.

    Feeder Barbs?

Find out what they are and buy them from some tank not labelled as "feeders". Any feeder fish are just going to be ones that are culled from a hatch and their fate is in the belly of a predator. Unless they're goldfish or guppies, the most common feeders, I would assume there is some reason...

Flourite and why it has to be ultra-washed

I see what you're saying bloo, but I was just answering kenneth's question... "will fish die if they are put in a tank like that ? i mean if the water suddenly became really cloudy". With Flourite, like I said, it would probably irritate their gills, "at best". At worst... who knows. Again...

Flourite and why it has to be ultra-washed

If you're asking whether or not fish can survive in ugly ugly murky nasty water, then just come to where I live and look at the Catawba River sometime. After it rains, the water will be orange with all the mud for weeks. You can scoop out a cupfull, and can't see an inch in front of your face...

    UV Sterilizer

I just helped my father hook one of these up on his 75g planted tank. It worked AMAZINGLY well. We hooked it up on Sunday afternoon, and he said when he got home from work on Monday, the tank was crystal clear. Same model as you're looking at, the Coralife. As for other required parts...

    Mushrooms and stuff

I was taking a picture this morning to show off where my mushrooms have "split" and I have two new baby red mushrooms peeking out from under the flourescent orange one on the right. This picture just came out so well that I couldn't help but doctor it a bit and post it. :)

24G Nano Cube DX Nano Reef Setup

In a place like NY I'd expect more fish stores. There are two around here that I absolutely swear by, and 2 more that everyone else loves but I just haven't had time to visit. My normal LFS is right down the street from my house, owned and run by one guy.... the sole employee. He's been in...

24G Nano Cube DX Nano Reef Setup

In the picture above, you have a feather duster. Nice! :D As for the polyps, DO NOT THROW THEM OUT!!! I've had 1 set of polyps die on me, and 3 sets live just fine. Strangely, the polyps that died opened up every day..... go figure. After I moved my tanks around and took my orange tip...

    Hello my salty pals!!

Well, all saltwater fish are nice :) Can you be more specific about what you had in mind? Tangs? Clowns? Gobies? Triggers? Wrasses? Go have a look around here and get an idea of what you like and would like to keep, then we'll be glad to answer any of your questions about them. Good...

    nice-looking aquarium?

I think Glasscages.com makes aquariums like that, without the plastic bracing. I would be wary though, as I've heard lots of bad things about their quality and seaming.

    How many inches

They're all just fine. The clowns baffle me sometimes, because they'll get along just fine, and then one decides it's gonna chase the other one all over the tank. Then they'll stop for a while and play around... then the chasing begins again. The gobies are little piggies, the gramma is even...

    How many inches

You looking at my profile to name all my fish or something? ;) I have a pair of clowns, a royal gramma, a pair of watchman gobies... and a six line wrasse ;) Yesterday I asked the guy at the LFS to get a purple firefish for me. :D

    Betta Vase Article

I wish more people would read stuff like that. I've had to correct employees at the local Petsmart who told customers it was okay to put a betta in a vase with a plant and not feed it. "Oh it'll just nibble on the plant roots, that's all the food it needs!" *shudder*

    Chain pet stores

You have some crappy pet stores in your area, Ethos. And when it comes to saltwater fish like you're talking about, don't even THINK about buying them from a chain store. The PetCo that's near here is NASTY! Their freshwater section isn't bad, but the saltwater tanks just make me cringe...

    Mandarin and mobile coral.

Hehehehe.... nice coral :) I got a piece of Xenia from a local club meet, and it was glued onto an old shell. Luckily, the shell I have would require a monster hermit crab to pick up and move :D Good luck getting that guy out... I hope there's nothing in that tank that can sting that coral!
