    Iodine and amano shrimp molting

I've read that amano shrimp (and most other shrimp for that matter) need a trace amount of iodine in the water in order to help them with molting. I've seen people recommend Kent Marine Iodine before, but that stuff is expensive and only comes in BIG bottles, far bigger than I'd ever use for my...

    DIY plants?

Expensive? Where are you shopping, man? I just got a HUGE piece of Hornwort for $2. The crypts I bought have grown huge, and they were only $3 each. Java ferns are dirt cheap and very very easy to grow. In about a month, you can have daughter plants ready to be moved off of the leaves of...

    need some lighting help

I haven't seen metal halide bulbs, but you can CERTAINLY pick up flourescent and compact flourescent bulbs cheaper at Lowes/Home Depot than at a fish store. Yesterday, I bought a GE "Daylight" 6500k 24" 20w bulb for $4, and it looks just as good.... perhaps a bit brighter, than the $10 Coralife...

    Bass

Well Les Claypool occasionally played a 4 string too, so I guess that's okay ;) Now if you're a REAL man, you'll get a 6 string fretless and learn to play like Mr. Claypool :D :D

    Bass

You know... I'm counting... and I only see 4 strings on those things? What's that all about, huh :P Everybody knows if you're gonna buy an Ibanez... real men play the 5 string bass :) ;) Well, even though they ARE missing a string, they're both quite nice :D :D

    air pump with co2

It's called a "check valve". All the LFSs around here sell the Penn Plax check valve for about $1.50-$2. It has a cotton "air filter" in it and a little piece of plastic to block the intake if there's any return pressure on the line. Cheap and necessary...

    Need help ID'ing two plants

I bought these today because I THINK I know what they are, but I'm not positive. Either way, they make good cover for fry and they look good. Tell me if I'm right here, or what they are. First, I think this is Hornwort One stem on that piece is easily 2' long. It bends over and takes up...

diftwood seems to change colour of water

Care to explain why? I've never heard of anything like this? And would it apply to all evergreen trees?
  11. C

diftwood seems to change colour of water

I think it's a beautiful color, so long as you keep up the water changes so it stays a brownish tint, and doesn't turn dingy. So blackwater extract will help give me that color after the driftwood runs its course? I'll have to go look it up. Danke! :D

diftwood seems to change colour of water

Buy them?! OOH, suggest something! The piece of wood in my 20g is still leeching and still turning the water that gold/brown color so I'm good for the timebeing, but after that, what can I use to keep that nice color?

    Another DIY Stand..........

Join the club, man. I got a 55g and immediately caught the bug, also buying a 5g minibow for our bedroom so my wife could have another betta, and a 20g for our office so I could have a guppy tank. The catch to the 20g for here was that I have to make a stand that can house the aquarium, AND...

    CO2 with "carbon rich" substrates?

I have a basic understanding of plants and CO2, I think. Plants need carbon, and that usually comes in the form of CO2. They take in CO2, use the carbon, and convert it to O2 through photosynthesis. They can use carbon from other sources but it's not gonna result in "pearling." I had looked...

    diy tanks - acrylic?

Actually, on acrylics, I don't thikn you're supposed to use the silicon. The acrylic adhesives basically melt and fuse the 2 pieces together for added strength. You can then seal it with silicon, but I'm pretty positive you need to actually glue it with the proper stuff.

    Contemplating a SW setup

Okay... here goes... get ready for a barrage of questions! ;) First, filtration. Would something like a fluval 204/304 work? I've heard some of the guys on the Subaru board talking about their reef setups, and they always talk about removing the biological filtration stuff like the biowheel...

    Custom Making a Tank

Check http://www.mcmaster.com for the plexi and supplies. For a tank that's not gonna be holding much water, you can probably do 3/16" sheets. Keep in mind however that for sheets bigger than 24"x48" (I think)... you're gonna pay extra for shipping :(

    Contemplating a SW setup

A co-worker has told me that he'll give me an old 29gal aquarium that he has sitting around, and I've been thinking about doing a SW setup for it. But, I don't want one of these huge reef setups. Maybe a tiny bit of live rock, but I don't want it to be as overwhelming as a lot of reef tanks...

    CO2 with "carbon rich" substrates?

In my 20g guppy tank, I have Onyx Sand and Flourite as the substrate, and both say they're carbonate rich plant substrates. Right now I have lilaeopsis, water sprite, and dwarf sag in there and they all seem to be doing okay, just interior sections of the VERY dense lilaeopsis bundles turning...

    Incandescent tank hood

I have the Coralife in my Minibow hood. See what I mean about how it bulges out right above the metal screw in area? The hood MAY be made just for those slim incandescant bulbs, and that may not fit. If you're wanting to grow plants, get the Coralife bulb. If you're not, just get those from...

    Incandescent tank hood

And make sure you have clearance because the diameter of the bulb is a lot bigger than the incandescent too, due to the ballast on the base. Mine barely fit in a minibow 5 hood.

    cory in guppy fry tank

If you're gonna get more cories for a tank like that, find some albino cories. They're about the smallest cories that you can easily find. I've heard that shrimp will eat fry, but they won't chase them down. If there's a dying or dead fry, they'll dispose of it.... which is really doing you a...

    Ordered java moss...

Mandi: that sucks :( Yeah, it was me that ordered it and just got nothing in return. I don't know how this forum feels about promoting/badmouthing ordering sites, but I would STRONGLY advise people to stay away from them. On my order, they just cancelled my order and didn't charge me for...

    Java Moss

Well I'm beginning to regret ordering this, too. I placed the order Wednesday, and paid for overnight shipping thinking it would ship Thursday and I'd get it Friday. Well it's now Friday, and it still shows my order as "pending"... which means the earliest I'm possibly gonna get it is Tuesday...

Could anyone help me with this please?

The leaves look too small to be water wisteria, but at the same time, they don't look like water sprite either. Between the two though, I'd lean more toward that being water sprite, based on the way the stems look, and the shape of the leaves.

    2 new...

    When you buy a plant....

You're supposed to remove the rock wool too. When I get potted plants like that, I take them out of the black plastic thing, pull all the rock wool off, and trim the roots just a bit to get them ready to start growing again. They CAN grow still in the rock wool and the plastic pot, but they'll...

    Java Moss

    Best way to breed snails...

Your question is a lot like asking "how do I smash my finger with a hammer". It's not something you have to strive for.... it'll just happen. And for most of us, happen far too frequently ;) As long as there's algae and excess food, and you have a few pond snails to start with..... you're in...

    How do you grow plants

Most fish stores I've seen aren't so much "growing" plants as "keeping plants alive". As long as they have CO2, light, and fertilizer... that's all they really need.

This is one I saw at Ripley's Aquarium last year, and consequently one of my favorite photos I've ever taken. Up front is a leafy see dragon, and behind him you can see a weedy sea dragon.

the smallest loach for snail eating

I think a sidthimunki or a lohachata (Yoyo/Pakistani Loach) will eat them. For that matter, any of the botia loaches should suck them up handily. You can ask in the loach forum on here.... they can probably tell you for sure.

    Must find Nemo

Where do you people get your real drift wood?

I got mine from a stump at the edge of our yard. Last owner cut down 2 trees and didn't grind the stumps up, so now they're starting to really fall apart and look good. I've looked at places that sell driftwood, but I just can't bring myself to pay money for "trash" wood.
