yeah i got two bits of wood, both were soaked for days before they got in the tank. One is about 10-12 months old now and i think that its fine. The other is probs 2-3 months old and still leaks tannins like crazy...

sounds like you have got a similar tank to me. I went down the Barb route, but i wouldn't recommend that with an Angel. I would agree with above, but maybe mix up your tetra a bit. I personally like a mix of slightly different fish, instead of one big group.

Does this work? i am constantly changing my water to battle with my bogwood and - although more water changes are better than less - i would be interested if some media in my filter could help me out!

Shrimp should be OK, so long as they're big enough not to be eaten! As for barbs - most will anger the Betta. Cherry barbs are more friendly and you should get away with them, but def. not tiger, odessa, rosy - anything like that. I would agree with above - go for some tetra / rasbora / maybe...

yeah i would let it drop down to 0 before adding more. As WD says, if its too high, it will encourage the wrong type of bacteria to grow

Did you say you were doing a fish-in cycle? my guess would be that the fish was damaged by the build-up of harmful chemicals during your cycle... How long have you been cycling for?

I got a Juwel Rio 180 with bog standard built in filter. Would anyone recommed an upgrade? maybe the U4? would there be any benefit or do people rate the Juwel built in jobbies?

i have heard that any photo period under 4h is 'ignored' by the plants - so all your going to do is increase algae growth. So i wouldn't recommend the 2h morning + 6h evening idea. Don't know how much truth is in that though. Believe i heard it from Waterdrop so i believe it!

do you know the volume of your tank? my mental arithmatic [sp] isn't too good on your dimensions, but i would hazard a guess that 5 silver dollars might be over-stocking your tank. Let alone adding discus.

I was out on business monday night / tuesday and forgot to ask Mrs Timmy_Bee to feed my fish... Not the end of the world - it was only a day. But i came back and my green tigers were really dark. Almost black. And my standard tiger was pale. I thought they wanted a bit of grub, so went to feed...

i do 2 - 3 'buckets' because each one is a good 25 - 30 litres, so 3 would be ~50% change (my bogwood is still releasing lots of tannins so i do ~50% weekly to keep the water clear) I looked into a DIY Python, but forgot about it when i got my flexi-tub. Before that i was using a 10L bucket and...

stupidly enought, i have been adding the water in buckets (well those 'flexi-tub' things - much bigger than a bucket!) but been too lazy to add the de-chlor until i have added all the new water, then add it directly to the tank I think i'll stop being so lazy...

its quite normal for fish to feed on tehir dead friends, but never a good sign when its happening in a fish shop! I say never - it could be a one off (sometimes fish just die..) but if it looks like this is the norm (which is often the case in 'chain' LFS's) then i would avoid buying there

why are you proud of the fact your tank is over stocked?

By the by, Zebra plecos can be quite expencive...

Did you cycle the tank? (add ammonia to 'feed' the bacteria and monitor the nitrate/nitrite levels) If not, search for cycling on here (or wait for one of the more experienced memebers to tell you what to do) but short term - i would do a big water change, buy a good water test kit (API Master)...

i would assume that so long as you use waterproof, non-toxic paints you should be OK. I think the other thing that would be worth monitoring would be your pH levels. If you have got a water test kit, you could try some tests by putting some clay etc in some water and testing the pH to see if...

Surley if its just chlor you want to get rid of, you could just leave your water for 24h. Invest in a large bath tub...

I think this will be the last addition to the tank, as its pretty well stocked now. My next tank set-up will probs be a malawi species tank, but i cant see that happening for a long time
