    Starting My First Fishtank

do you mean an automatic feeder or a big block of food? i didnt think the auto feeders could only do x days (havent used them myself), but either way they should be fine for a copuple of days without food. Also, becuase you have done a proper fishless cycle, you could fully stock your tank on...

are they like the one in your avatar? i think that is a 5 banded barb (aka Pentazona? i think?)

Is There Such A Fish As....

im no cichlid expert, but i would try whatever fish you want. If you acclimatise [sp] the fish properly, over a long enough period (try the drip technique) i would think they would be OK

How Big Of A Snail Can A Betta Kill?

magnetic algae cleaners are pretty good at getting most off. Personally i would just whack the snails in with her. If she eats them, then you dont need to feed her as much! if she leaves them alone, you solve your algae problem. win-win

    Just Bought An Fx5 Fluval

you have got an FX5 on a 360L???? isn't that slightly (just a tad....) overkill? i thought they were more for a 360 US G tank...

New Fish Tank, Is It Overstocked?

(sorry if this is a double post - PC playing up) I would not recommend the feeder block things. they usually end in tears. Best solution would be to find anyone who could feed them maybe once or twice? If not, maybe look into the automatic feeders? they are still quite bad, but much better...

    Voting For Totm November 2010

Can i ask that all photos are uploaded in the same fasion. My nasty work seems to block some photos and not others. I havent quite worked out which ones i can see and which ones i cant, but maybe someone else has this issue? On this post i can only see pics for BTTF, Simon & Alex

New Fish Tank, Is It Overstocked?

a word of warning about frogs - i have kept them in the past and its been a bit of a pain. When they are small, they are in danger of being picked on by fish so they hide away. this means you never see them and are quite hard to feed. but i still love the little guys. I think i have got 3 in my...

    Cleaning

yeah i wouldn't want to brush my teeth with anything thats been scrubbing on my tank!!!!

    How Does This Look....

I was wondering this myself. So you just get as close as you can with a 2" pipe? im guessing you cant get in all the nooks and crannies, but thats ok is it?
  14. Timmy_Bee

    Barbs

well that might be worth asking... Cos those little peckers can get pretty big! FF13 - how big is your tank?

    Kmur's Cycle Journal

Im no stocking expert, but you could prob squeeze a couple more in there if needs be. Probably good to start with the above, and when you're in the habit of water changes etc you can eek the numbers up (but not by that much) As for the spike, the thing i would say is there is a reason why we do...

Do These Cycle Boosters Actually Work?

I for one would like to see the results of any test. I think its better than nothing, which is the ammount of proof i have got at the mo. We are not writing a scientific journal so no need for the 'this is inaccurate' caveats - im just interested in peoples experiences whether good or bad Edit...

How Should I Transport Filter Seeding Media?

Dont know if im too late (dont know what time 'tonight' is where you are) but have you tried using elastic bands to tie the fish bag? much easier - just twist the top a few times, fold it over and wrap some elastic bands round (doubling them up until they are very tight)

    Barbs

Never heard of metalic barbs. you got any pics? I agree with above, sounds like boisterous fun to me!
  19. Timmy_Bee

Do These Cycle Boosters Actually Work?

well i doubt our test kits are any way near accurate enough. im guessing each test would be off the scale. Unless you could dilute one drop into say 100ml tap water and test that? How many ml in a bottle? how many litres in your tank? if you could work out the same dilution on a tiny scale and...

Do These Cycle Boosters Actually Work?

we could really do with running water tests on the bottle. I wonder whether there would already be levels of NO2, NO3 and NH3 (is that ammonia, i forget)?

    Relisted Item E-Bay

all you can go on is a good positive review % and a bit of hope in humanity, but that doesn't often get you far
  22. Timmy_Bee

Do These Cycle Boosters Actually Work?

yeah i saw good results for Safe start (not for any other product though) although some seem to be with the addition of seeded media, so i didn't really see the point. Again, an apology to the OP for completely ignoring the 'personal experience' thing

    Fishless Cycle

well if your friends tank is now filtered, why dont you ask for your carbon back ;)

How Often Should I Feed My Catfish Algae Wafer

or try some vegetables. I lob in a few tops / tails of whatever veg i have with sunday lunch to gauge how they like it. So far the only thing they havent eaten is parsnip! although carrots take a few days to disappear

    Intenal Filter Advice

is it the juwel that is built into the tank? thats what i have got on my Rio 180. I think its vibrating against somethign cos its quiet when the lid is open, but growls a bit when its closed. Noisy was over-reacting, but mine isn't silent

Do These Cycle Boosters Actually Work?

so back to the topic in hand, what do we think would be a good test of whether Safe Start works. This is my suggestion (which i am unable to run, because i dont have 3 tanks & filters Tank 1 (Safe Start) Follow instructions on bottle. When 'cycle' has finished, add 3ppm ammonia and test ever...

Do Hob Filters Mean You Ca't Have A Lid?

so what is the advantage of a HOB? takes less space in the tank than an internal, and no space in your stand like an external?
  32. Timmy_Bee

Do These Cycle Boosters Actually Work?

Maybe Tetra are the creators of life? Our existance has evolved from their bottled products? just a thought. Also, C101 - sorry i didn't mean the moon was right in the middle of earth and space, i just meant it was inbetween the two points (albeit much close to the 'space' side)
  33. Timmy_Bee

Do These Cycle Boosters Actually Work?

C101 - we are being devils advocates as stated in your quote. we are raising questions from the other side of the argument to spark a discussion. As for evolution - i'm quite aware of 'how it works', and as for a middle ground? somewhere like the moon might be a good start, with a minimal...
  34. Timmy_Bee

Do These Cycle Boosters Actually Work?

this was my thought - you would hope that a company like Tetra who have patents on their unique system of housing the bacteria are not just ripping you off... but many will (rightfully) disagree
  35. Timmy_Bee

Do These Cycle Boosters Actually Work?

i guess in space, they would be frozen and therefor could 'revive' themselves when they warm up? but i don't know what the vaccume would do to them - remembering Arnie's face on Total Recall... I'm gunna go with a No, but i think with enough years evolution its possible? but having said that...

    New Tank....

Kinzo, i like your Myanmar idea (is this the same as Burma? my geography is poor...) Is there any online resource that could tell me which fish come from where? am thinking of doing a biotope for my next set-up, and would be interested if there is a one-stop shop for information on these...
  37. Timmy_Bee

    New Tank....

would a 405 be overkill? i know over filtering is far better than under, but to save some money i think a 305 (or even the 205) would do the job.
  38. Timmy_Bee

Do These Cycle Boosters Actually Work?

By no means do i take this personally. I was just trying to fuel the discussion with my limited (remarkably incorrect) ideas. The truth is, i wouldn't trust these bottles but thought it was worthy of a good chin wag
  39. Timmy_Bee

Do These Cycle Boosters Actually Work?

was just looking at reviews of Tetra Safe Start and the first few i could find that were deemed 'successful' also had seeded media and/or gravel from a mature tank... Thats hardly a fair test!

    New Tank Information?

sounds a similar size to my tank (have a look in the 'members tanks' section for some pics) - i ended up getting mainly barbs which (if you are unfamiliar with them) are usually a bit bigger than tetra, but still quite small. these guys then need to be in groups of preferably 6+ per species so...
