Demon fish too big?

I am not looking for anything straight away. im still morning the loss of my EBJD, but i thought i would put out a few feelers and see what fish people might suggest. My idea is to have 2 Sevs, maybe some Apiso's (dont know much about these, but i like what i have seen) and one larger cichlid...

Yeah i'll try some frozen tonight. My issue is, i try to put food near him and he darts off to another corner. Then within seconds all the food is eaten by all the other greedy fish. I might result to over feeding, andb then doing a vac and change 30 mins after to get rid of any left-over

it really does depend on the fish. The 1 inch per gallon is a good starting point, but the footprint also has a lot to do with it. Im guessing this is aprox 3' X 1.5' Ballpark figure? 30 - 40 inches of fish, so maybe 15-20 Tetra / Guppy (not 15 each) and 5-7 or so corys?

out of curiosity, what tank size would you recommend for a JD? i have got a 240L and my LFS has just started selling JD (EBJD i think...) I know my tank is pretty well stocked at the mo, so i wouldn't get one without a serious think and a re-shuffle, but would 240L be too small to start with?

by the sounds of it, temp shouldn't be a problem (so long as its contant) - too hot for a gold fish, and also too small. I would look into a small shoal of tetra, or barbs. Maybe a 1 or 2 bristlenose catfish and maybe a pair of dwarf gourami as a centre-piece

I would opt for something with a bit personality. maybe a cichlid. Any kind of centre-piece fish should please his alpha male tendancies to have the biggest and best

Oh i getcha. Could you not use standard external filter tubing? are you planning on running this out of the tank and along the top, or down the sides and underneith the gravel?

i think you have also go to remember most people considering putting a cichlid or two into a community tank don't have a 200gal tank... but hey! I myself am trying the cichlid + community with barbs, dwarf gourami and two Severum in a 240L tank. so far so good!

can you explain your filtration ideas a bit more? i have thought about doing this in my 4 footer, but never really gave it much thought. I guess you cant / dont want to set up a weir on the right hand side?

i doubt a fish tank would get as hot as the room temp, even in a conservatory. So it might be worth running a test (don't ask me how, bar waiting till the summer with an empty tank...)

Uriel - i like it! Does anyone use those battery powered syphons? any good? Its a bit too far from my tank to any sink / bath, so i just go with the large bucket technique. I can clean the gravel and do a 25 - 35% water change in 2-3 bucket loads (ok, i've only got a 240L but its big enough)...

Have you thought about buenos aires tetra? they are a bit bigger, and i think they look fantastic! If you do buy barbs and they dont get on, let me know! could always house a few more... But i really think a group of 6+ should be fine

on the (badly founded) assumption your tank is a Juwel Rio 240, have you also considered replacing the internal filter with an external? its not as hard as you may think (search on here for topics on how to remove the internal) and it not only increases the size of you tank, but will help with...

As a self-titled barb specialist, I would recommend Golden barbs. They grow into a decent sized fish (3", maybe 4"), are active and shoal well, and are not agressive. Or Rosy's if you want a differnet colour, but i have found these to be a bit more angry. Or if you want a bit more colour, there...
