a bristle nosed (or BN) plec is usually a good choice. But somewhere on here is a pinned topic detailing a list of plecs that stay small. I would hunt that down and have a look. Also, please be aware that all plecs do need feeding - they wont just live off the algae. Also, they do poo a lot, so...

This should be fine. I think most people here buy stuff like that from garden centres etc cos its half the price! just clean it good and proper and let it soak for a good long while in a bucket

i would double check your literage (is that a word? if so, its spelt wrong...) just becuase i have a Rio 180 which is ... 180L and i was under the impression the 300 is 300L - but i have been known to assume incorrectly before! Anywho, i personally would go for a quite heavily planted tank...

you might want more filtration on your Rio 180. As you say, there is a lot of media, but the powerhead isn't great ^^ assuming you have got the original Juwel internal filter

sorry to piggy-back this thread, but i have been thinking about getting a pair of dwarf cichlids for my tank. My issue is that its got barbs (inc agressibve type like Tiger) which im guessing will fin nip. Anyone know any kind that would stand up to the barbs? As for pH / KH - not sure what...

Some gold barbs might look nice, but they are more mid-bottom dwellers. I also like Buenos Aires Tetra, but they are a 'common silver colour'

are your sinking pellets tropical ones, or catfish ones? I have some catfish ones which are much harder / denser than 'tropical' sinking pellets. My barbs try to eat these, but dont get anywhere, resulting in them being left for my plec. My pellets in question are cheap, Pets @ Home own brand...

Close... Wash the filters in a bucket of tank water you were just about to throw away after a water change. Otherwise the gunk will just get back into the filter. IE: gravel clean ~30% water into a bucket. Clean filter media in bucket toss bucket add new water

Im guessing with The Edge, you have to get the perfect amount of water, and if you shove your arm in, it might over flow! As for tools, i have seems some in P@H (UK) which look ok, and was much less than £40. but cant remeber the make or model. Same co. that make gravel cleaners

I would keep an eye on the barbs nipping at the angel. But if you get 8, they should entertain themselves. Also, good choice on the Golden. They are not the most aggressive barbs. As mentioned above, stocking levels should be fine. Just keep an eye on your water stats and add fish gradually

The only thing i would add is that an air pump is by no means essential. So long as your filter outlet 'ripples' the surface of the water, this is enough to oxygenate [sp] the water. Don't get me wrong, air stones on air pumps look good, and often provide something fun for the little fish to...

by the way, you cant really go 1 fish / 5 litres. The 'rule' is 1 inch of fish per gallon (roughly 5L). I say 'Rule' - this can be stretched, but don't go thinking you can shove in 30 fish. As a beginner, i would start with half that (max) and work your way up when you have got into the habbit...

Tigers def get to 2" - mine are already close and they are less than a year old... Dont have a ny 5 band, but im pretty sure they are the same. I would agree with WD - this looks pretty well stocked as it is. At least let them grow a bit and see how full it looks.

is your filter on? I would have thought this would do a more than adequate job of moving the warm water around the tank. A difference of 9 degrees looks a bit dodgy to me... Or did i mis-read that. Is the water 29 at one side and 20 at the other? or is the heater set to 29 and you have only got...

Also, if fish have died recently, it might be worth checking your water stats and making sure everything is a-OK before thinking about adding new guys...

sorry - forgot the rasboras stay small. Always think of fish like that ending up 1" - 2" ps turn your tank into a coffee table. Then im sure there would be space for it!

put some tights over the filter? (ps i am also Tim from Norwich...) or you might be better off moving them to a smaller tank and setting up a DIY sponge filter
