i just realised i managed to post that reply without even realising there was a 2nd page! (am still asleep - even if it is lunch time!) so sorry for the lack of relevance

When To Syphon Gravel When Cycling With Fish

you want the bacteria to grow in your filter. very little will grwo in your gravel. I would syphon from day one, because nasty chemicals can build up in the gravel and poison your fish.

    Guess The Fish Quiz

Why don't you do one, Biffster?

    How Much?

if you start selling off the fish, i would be interested in the bumblebee cat and the black ruby barbs

    Here We Go

looking good! a nice black background usually brings out the colours in the fish, so that would be a good choice.

    Starting My First Fishtank

ah... Yeah, make sure the ammonia is lower than that, otherwise you may get the wrong kind of bacteria growing. How are your nitrite/nitrate levels looking?

    Anyone Local To Bedford Have...

i am in Norfolk (kind of close...ish...) and am thinking of selling my BiOrb (60L) if your interested

    every day's a school day!

    Stocking Ideas

I wouldn't recommed Neons into a new tank. Ideally you should wait until 6 months after your filter has cycled. Rummynoses would be better

Clown Loaches / Oscars / Jd In 36 Gallon Temporary Tank?

I personally wouldn't add those fish until you have got the bigger tank. You never know whats round the corner, and all those fish would be too big for a 36G (inc the JD) But as for when you have the bigger tank - yes i would get a shoal of loaches (4 or 5)

Water Cloudy: Jbl Biotopol Plus And Denitrol

what is it meant to do? it is a water conditioner? (sorry - havent heard of it before)
  13. Timmy_Bee

    Heater Angle?

so here is a nice (off topic) scientific question for you... As i am sure you are aware, water is one of the few (if not only) molecules that is less dence as a solid (ice floats) which is one of the sole reasons there is live on earth (i'll leave that topic for another day!) - So at what temp...

How Many Plants Is Too Much And Should We Add Whilst Cycling?

in that case i would leave it as is, let them grown out a bit and if you want more, add them gradually. If you whack loads in, you might just find they all die because of lack of CO2/O2/Food/Light/All of the above. But take it gradually and you should be fine!

    Uv Sterilizering Lamp

im pretty sure wattage is still an important part of UV (being that UV is still light, just off our visible spectrum). Otherwise lots of hippies would be sterile thanks to their UV lights (or 'blacklights' as they called them) in the 60's. (these people may well be sterile, but for other, more...

    Cory's, Barbs And Plecs

i dont see why not. Personally, i dont have cory's, but if you want to be careful, then either avoid the especially nasty barbs (tiger, but they really arn't as bad as people say) or keep them in respectible numbers (6+) As for plec's, my barbs don't bother them at all!
  17. Timmy_Bee

    Heater Angle?

so why at a 45 degree angle? why doesnt everyone have it horizontally? (mine is built in to the juwel box) on 2nd thoughts, im guessing you would want it at the bottom (again, thanks to heat rising) and you would need a lot of flex to do that if you had a big tank.... Im sold on the 45 degrees

    Arnie's 100L Planted Tank

How Many Plants Is Too Much And Should We Add Whilst Cycling?

have a good read in the planted section of this forum. And read up about the silent cycle. This isn't for beginners, but in theory, a well planted tank is as good as a filter full of bacteria at decomposing ammonia / nitrites. But if you go down that road, you need to look after your plants as...

I've Dealts With Tanks Before, But I Finally Got One To Call My Ow

sorry to be a party pooper, but i dont think the tank is really big enough for the bala either. Not only do these get big, but they should really be kept in a shoal

    Verrrrry Serious Problem Here!

does it not cost a small fortune keeping that many fish?

Did First Water Test In A While....

yeah either over feeding or not enough water changes will do this (or both...)
  23. Timmy_Bee

Did First Water Test In A While....

API Master is a good'un - but mainly you just want a liquid-based one. Yes to the water change, cant hurt! (how often / much do you change your water?)

    Ben's Tropical Tank

Juwel Rio's are great tanks. The internal filter should be fine, unless you plan to over-stock the tank (i wouldnt recommend this until you are comfortable with your tank and set-up) - and at that point, i would recommend getting an external filter and chopping off the internal. As for rocks -...

    Geting 100L

if you want slightly more common fish, but still keeping clear of the tetra, you could have a Barb set-up. They (IMO) are much nicer than tetra to look at, but don't shoal as much. They also are quite nippy to any long-finned fish eg's include (from my personal stocking): Cherry (stay small...

Two Pin Plugs / Fish To Aquarium Order

with regards to your other question. Is the filter in the 'new' tank less than 6 months old? if so, your neons might not do too well as they need a nice mature filter

    New 500Litre Community-Ish Set Up

im assuming you have got more than a 305 plugged into that tank? Love your set-up though! have been looking at ND aq. quite a bit recently... but i can only squeeze a 4' tank in my allocated space, so i think 500L is out the door!

    Lfs Ignorance

i think the other point is that these fish stores are more interested in money than fish (and as a business, thats not all that bad) Until some sort of government regulation comes into place (which i hope it won't) they are well within their right to act ignorant. 10 years ago, it was the same...

This Guy/girl Is At My Lfs

there is one in Swallow Aquatics (Norfolk) called twiglett. It was re-homed there 'cos someone bought it at 2" and didnt quite realise what it would become! Great fish though - my wife loves to visit the store just for him! (which is quite useful because its the best LFS in my area)

    Bought New Bogwood

i would soak it (as in leave it for a good few days to a week) more to get rid of some tannins. I very much doubt a bit of 4th hand smoke would do anything to your aquarium

    When To Syphon Gravel?

as soon as you get fish, i guess (or just before) are you doing a fishless cycle?
  38. Timmy_Bee

    Water Evaporation?

back to the original topic, if you dont have a lid (and dont want one) - get a condensation tray - this should sit on the glass braces (if you have them) on your tank so its not visible.
  39. Timmy_Bee

    Comet Goldfish

i would favour the fish over the plants and ditch the heater... no idea if plants need set temps - not much of a green-fingered kinda guy!
