How long does beneficial bacteria live without an ammonia source?

They will be fine. Some say the maximum is 2 days some say 2 weeks. I believe it is closer to 2 weeks but in either case you will be fine

    First tank advice

Hey there nothing to add on the cycle just want to share my experience with deep tanks which admittedly has been negative The tank has bigger a need for aeration due to the limited susrface area Stocking wise it is much more hard to find appropriate stocking since nearly all fish use the...

Get ready for all the same old questions.......

Hey kwi Welcome to the hobby !:hi: To answer your questions The must haves on equipment are a heater,a filter, thermometer and very importantly a test kit for all fish and tanks. Other than that I recommend a gravel vacuum, light, net, fan and some hiding spots. I recommend live plants because...

    Pest snail Problem

Hey all So the whole issue first started about 5 months ago and I have currently removed well over 2 dozens of snails. I added some new plants in the tank and they obviously still had some snail eggs on them. One hatched and I let it grow. Turns out it was a ramshorn. A bit later( maybe 2 weeks)...

    Filtration

Pothos, spider plants are very good even some species of orchids(only the ones that are epiphytes) can work but they are not so effective Read this blog post for more info: https://www.myaquariumclub.com/terrestrial-plants-in-the-aquarium-21135.html
  10. G

    Filtration

Yeah they do help indeed but terrestrial plants are so much more effective

    Filtration

If it turns out you do have ammonia in the tap water you can prepare the water for the water change 1 day before and add some pothos to it. Pothos is very good at absorving nitrogenous waste and especially ammonia so you should have 0 ammonia after that There are also other plants that can work...

    Filtration

They do look like cory eggs to me too. But after 1 week the gourami or the cories themselves should have snacked on them, they should have grown fungus and/ or they should have hatched as @essjay . If it turns out they are cory eggs the look infertile to me as fertile ones usually gte a brownish...

Cycling betta tank for my mom, advice

Definitely. Some of the bacteria would be dislodged and fall. Just do it directly in your moms media and not in the water to help them a bit. If you have a way (cercamic media etc.) adding some of the media from the maintank to the small will definitely help

    Removing Hair Algae

Siamese algae eaters, amano shrimp , bristlenose plecos snails like the clithon corona are all good choices Other than that I would recommend trying to find the cause of the algae. It is always a better option than adding to the bioload There are also other options but are far more dangerous...

Fry staying on top of tank

If they seem to big It is possible that they were born a couple of days back and have started to come out more. Other than that it could be a lack of oxygen but quit unlikely unless you see them gasping and trying to ripple the water surface. Have you ever had baloon molly fry again?

Hmm that's something to think about, Maybe angling it in a different way will help reduce the light intenisty. I will give that a test

Old leaves full of algae, new growth healthy

The val has been planted there for about 4-5 months now. I have active tropica concentrated substrate capped with sand. The light is on for 8 hours a day and I am doing weekly 50% water changes with filter maintenance and algae scrubbing. I'll post here with photos in a bit
  26. G

    Sand substrate.

For small grain simply hovering it slowly above the sand should work. For bigger grain using a gravel vacuum is best. I like to also go in with some tweezers and stab the substrate some times to move it and stop any dangerous gases form accumulating

Is 2 Gallon tank too small for betta

2 gallons can work if needed and if you are an experienced fish keeper. But if you are buying a new tank I would go bigger , 5+ gallons. 2 gallons doesn't give enough water for dilution and the smallest mistake can cost you.

Hey Ap Ok so, the lady at the petstore didn't really give you the best of advice. She advised for a fish-in cycle which is really stressfull for the fish and oftentimes they don't make it. The cloudiness in the water is a bacterial bloom , the nitrifying bacteria are now starting to show...
