Thanks! And about the fish washing in; they only get into the pond system when the upper stream floods- it drains via a small channel that is blocked/filtered by leaves and sticks so it drains slowly.

On no! Disaster has struck! My bettas, who were peaceful together up until now, have been fighting while I was gone!! Two are injured and one, my favorite, the cutest little betta, is DEAD!!! I guess you were right after all. :( :( :(

A 29-gallon is too small for an oscar, I would recommend a 55-gallon or larger for them; you might could house some dwarf cichlids, such as colorful gold or electric blue German rams.

I can't see the affected area that well. Are any scales missing? Is the fish flashing, or rubbing itself on hard decorations?

I think it is a good idea, but I wouldn't go around asking everybody to try it, as it only works with a special group of bettas.

Funny. It's not like I'm recommending it.

No offense, but I know what I'm doing. With the betta trick (don't ask because I'm not going to tell you what it is) all my trained males get along just fine, even in the presence of females.

It's probably a clown pleco or a goldspot pleco.

I think a tank that size is too small for the cichlids listed. Maybe you could go for a freshwater community tank.
