    New Tank Help Please

I would recommend smaller fish myself, as the smaller the fish, the more that can be stocked I don't mean to be rude, but we really need your ph and hardness to make good recommendations. hard water fish kept in soft water tend to develop mineral deficiencies,  wheras soft water fish kept in...

    Worried About Weight Of Tank

A rule of thumb I hear quoted a lot for glass tanks with substrate over here in the US is to estimate 10 pounds per gallon(About 4.5 kilos per 3.8 Litres) for a set up tank, and that's not including the weight of the stand. Also an important consideration here is the weight per linear foot/metre...

    Your Quarantine Tank

As I've heard that reflections from a bare-bottomed tank or light colored substrate can stress some fish, Maybe just enough of a black substrate to cover the Bottom? I have no Idea what type or brand to recommend, though.

    New Tank Help Please

Hello, and welcome to fishforums!  In order to give you useful information, we will need: Your Aquarium size: 70 litres (About 18.5 US Gallons) Your water's PH and hardness (Please check your water quality report if you don't have a test kit.) The temperature you plan to keep the tank at if...

How Many Fish In 64Litre Tank?

I would just like to add that while many tetras are too "hyper" for your tank, a few, like your neons, would be all right, it really all depends on the species. Oh, Incidentally Do you know what type of Barb you have?

How Many Fish In 64Litre Tank?

At a glance I can tell you the Black moor will need their own tank, these are coldwater fish and will get sickly in the warm water required by most tropicals.   Edit: Okay I hope you're sitting down. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but... Guppies need moderately to very hard water to do well...

    The Banana Plant

The only real special care that I'm aware of bananna plants needing is to place the "banannas" on top of the substrate, as this is how they grow in nature and they tend to rot otherwise. While mine tolerated growing under the light that came with the tank, no, co2, no ferts, when I upgraded the...

    Cardinal Tetras & Angelfish

Indeed, I would have recommended one of the two "dwarf" species, C. hastatus (Tail-Spot Pygmy Cory) or C Pygmaeus (Pygmy Cory), as they are very small and have the charming habit of frequently schooling with/alongside tetras. However, I fear the Angels may eventually attempt to eat them...

    Cardinal Tetras & Angelfish

In proper (IE not stunted) conditions, angels can more often than not attain 6 inches in length Accordingly, from what I've read,  the minimum size tank for a single healthy adult angelfish in a community is 29 gal, for a pair it's 55 gal. And that minimum obviously goes up even more if you...

    Escaping Snails

Oh, no, terribly sorry I thought you meant something like rift lake salts, used to make water very hard. The amount of calcium in plant food shouldn't be enough to affect the overall hardness much, sorry for the confusion.
  13. Jeremy180

    Escaping Snails

I just did a quick check on your "snails not moving" thread, and many of the fish you currently have like acidic water and would not appreciate calcium being added, as this will raise the PH. Hmm... The following is speculation on my part, but based on the fact that land snails can often find...

    Escaping Snails

I've heard of snails crawling 1 or 2 feet to escape a tank... Your best bet would be to make any holes in the tank cover too small for them to escape through.
  15. Jeremy180

    Mystery Snails Not Moving

Good to know they're feeling better.   BTW, snails make good tank "barometers" as they will often retreat into their shells in unfavorable conditions, frequently before the other residents show any obvious ill effects.

    Easy, Idiot-Proof Plants?

Also, it does'n't have to be tied to a large rock or driftwood. If you use a small piece, the roots will hide the rock over time, and voila! You have an imitation sword plant that won't outgrow the tank.  ....Well, most tanks anyway.

....And improperly managed shops constantly have dead fish in the tanks. Sorry, couldn't resist chiming in.

    New 29G Stocking

I'm thinking a good question here Ryan  would be not: How can I make convicts work for my aquarium? But instead: Are there any similar fish that would be better suited to my tank and water conditions? I mean seriously, with well over a thousand cichlid species alone, I should think that you...

    Mystery Snails Not Moving

I'm not sure, there are many variables here, could be a week, or it could be a month or more. I will say that it will be easier to  keep the ammonia down if you reduce the feeding as much as possible.
  21. Jeremy180

    Cardinal Tetras & Angelfish

Off topic, but did anyone else think of the "Fish are friends, not food" scene from Finding Nemo here? XD   Also, I thought that angels were like most other cichlids, in that keeping them singly was an option? Are they special cases?

Got Me A School Of Tiger Barbs

Well, I'd wait for someone more knowledgable than me to comment to your exact stocking levels, but if you can safely fit anything else in there, I'd go for something that stays at the top of the tank, to help balance things out.

    Mystery Snails Not Moving

It sounds like your tank may not be fully cycled yet. Is there anything else in the tank? NVM, just saw the list... You'll want to be keeping the ammonia as low as possible with water changes, preferably below 0.25ppm, until your filter's bacteria catch up with the bioload. Edit: Apologies if I...

    Mystery Snails Not Moving

Ammonia 1.2 Toxic levels. Nitrite 2.5 Less so but still toxic. I'd do an immediate large (70%+) water change as soon as possible. Have you read up on cycling?

Okay, anytime my post disagrees with byron's I know I'm probably on the wrong track, lol Before I get out of the way, Here's something that may help, Ryan.   http://users.tinyonline.co.uk/chrisshort/waterhard.htm

    Cardinal Tetras & Angelfish

Plants (real or fake) and/or other decor for cover will help immensely here, the more the better. EDIT: LOL sorry, read through the post too fast.   Maybe some less shy "dither" fish would help but I'm not sure which ones to recommend. Maybe some kind of corydoras?

    Stocking Levels

Although it may look like the inch per gallon "rule" (as stated, a very poor rule to begin with) is being violated at pet stores, Its really an illusion. New 29G Stocking

As I said before cichlids are not my specialty, ang hardwater cichlids are less so, But I know enough to tell you that there aren't many south american cichlids (inclding angels) that will do well in water this hard.   Basically with your water and tank size, you would be limited to cichlids 5"...

At What Point Does Copper/aluminum Become Toxic To Shrimp/snails?

Thank you for the replies everybody. In doing my own research, I found a scientific paper that stated that the lethal dose of copper sulfate for amano shrimp was 0.14ppm, I've also heard a lot of good reports on cupri-sorb, so I might get some just to be on the safe side.
  32. Jeremy180

    New 29G Stocking

As a general rule, yes with the rare exeptions being some of the riverine species like kribensis. another problem is that when mixing cichlids from different continents/reigons, frequently one group will be unable to "walk the walk" and can end up getting it's tailfin kicked.
  33. Jeremy180

    New 29G Stocking

Cichlids are not my forte' but I think I could contribute a bit. Still, so I'd wait for someone else to chime in before acting. IMO, I would avoid african lake cichlids, but that's just me. I don't know your water parameters, so some of these fish may or may not work in your water.   One option...

    Ph Stable @ 8.0, Kh: 1 Degree!?!

I was  told by somebody here a few days ago that 6 degrees Kh was lower than expected for my ph, so I re tested it a bit more carefully today, and came to find out that I had misread the directions the first time I tested, and that instead of changing from blue to orange, I was supposed to add...

Honey Gourami, Khuli Loach, Neon Tetra?

Well, there are several shoaling fish that are "better in one aspect or another than neons, depending on what you're looking for, but I'd rather have your ph before recommending any, as many require lower ph water, although there are some that prefer higher ph.   EDIT: if you don't have a test...

    Betta Fish With Clamped Fins

It won't give you your current tank parameters, but your water supplier generally has a water quality report viewable online. this will give approximate parameters for what is coming from your faucet, at any rate.
  38. Jeremy180

At What Point Does Copper/aluminum Become Toxic To Shrimp/snails?

According to my water supplier, my water has .22 ppm each of both copper and aluminum. Is this enough to hurt shrimp or snails? If so, is there any way to remove it?

    Marketing For The Fish

This kind of thing is exactly what I mean. At the very least make sure the customer doesn't assume that a fish is a "just add water" pet   Indeed, I think the best type of containers would be one of those cheap styrofoam coolers for large purchases, and maybe smaller foam boxes for smaller ones...
