Honey Gourami, Khuli Loach, Neon Tetra?

A bit off topic but I've read doing anything to encourage exercise is supposed to help improve a Betta's lifespan, I imagine the same would apply to other fish as well.

Lol, agreed, but the lfs had a limited supply (of plants) when I was over then, I'll try there when I can lift over ten pounds again.   Actually, I can live with the eggs, but seeing as thi will be a display tank if there's a way to avoid them being laid in the first place, so much the better...

    Marketing For The Fish

You pretty much just described how I'm  doing my next (fresh water) tank, except replace months with years. I aslo had to do it this way to a lesser degree for my current tank.

    Marketing For The Fish

While prices like this would cut out impulse buying, it would also cut out a lot of hobbyists, myself included. The main reason I'll never even consider going saltwater is I just plain can't afford it

    Marketing For The Fish

Well, while it wouldn't exactly be a financial incentive, or Help the bettas much, but for Goldfish and other beginner "tank busters" have a life size outline of the fish's max adult size. IMO, a 16 inch fish looks even bigger when you see it than when you just read the numbers.

    Marketing For The Fish

Hmm, how about some sort of discount to encourage the purchase of tanks over 4 gallons for bettas? And something to help steer anyone wanting goldfish to 55-75+ gallon tanks IMO, the two fish listed above probably get the short end of the stick more than any other species sold over here in the U.S.

    Marketing For The Fish

I think we have a winner! EDIT: Any other Ideas? I was thinking some sort of incentive to encourage proper cycling, and another for proper stocking, and yet another for preventing incompatible tankmates.

    Marketing For The Fish

Right you are, maybe I should dial back the discounts a bit, to say: Buy 4 schooling fish, get fifth of same species for 50% off, no other discounts?

    Marketing For The Fish

Ah, yes, but what I'm talking about here is some sort of financial incentive to encourage first-time fishkeepers to keep schooling fish in proper numbers. Also, some sort of incentive to get customers to wait for the tank to cycle, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that

    Crazy Guppies

Imo, an exellent reason to have a sponge filter is to have the option to run it through a power outage with a battery powered air pump (don't know how many LFS carry these, but most fishing tackle shops do in my area.) This could literally make the difference between life and death for your fish.

    Marketing For The Fish

I was thinking it might be good to have a thread to suggest marketing strategies (for thr LFS) designed to help encourage better fishkeeping, while still being financially doable. I'll go first. Policy: After the first four of any schooling fish of the same species, the next four are 25% off...

Two Bettas In Divided 10 Gallon?

Would just like to qualify that 2.5 gallons per fish (I'd go with at least 3 myself but whatever)  Is referring to the minimum water that should be allotted the fish for bioload purposes, some bettas may be overly stressed being this close together. Also, it's just my opinion but I think a betta...

Let's Have A Debate On Betta Tank Size.

Well, this is rather embarrassing, I can't find the references... I got so exited seeing the word "autopsy" in an article, after having read so many articles on both sides containingmostly either opinions (granted many were expert opinions) or anecdotes, that I didn't bother to actually check...

    Hood Recommendation?

hmm, too bad. Although it might just be an uncommon size bulb? Tell you what, why don't you try posting the wattage and socket size for the incandescent bulb( they should be in some bulb replacement directions somewhere on the fixture if nowhere else), and I'll see if I can find a compatible...

Let's Have A Debate On Betta Tank Size.

I think I may have found some real empirical evidence for a factor that doesn't seem to have been considered much yet, at least not in the terms of concrete verifiable evidence, I'll just need some time to trace the article I found it in back to the original research findings, and double- check...

    Incandescent Lighting

Really if you don't have any live plants at all then any bulb with which you can see the fish clearly/adequately could be considered okay for most fish. However, If you upgrade/convert to the new(ish) cfl style high efficiancy spiral bulbs, you would get more light for your watts, and would...

    Are My Fish Compatible?

Do you have any idea what type of catfish it is in this tank, a couple of the ones sold as "aquarium fish" can grow big enough to swallow a 10 gallon tank whole (no, I'm not exaggerating)! Edit: nvm, I see now that it's a pictus, please disregard this post.

    New 10G Tank What Fish

Thank you, Terribly sorry for the late reply, but I've recently had surgery....   Anyway, regarding your question it really depends on the snail species. For example Nerite snails need brackish water to successfully breed at all, but  with malaysian livebearing snails, frequently all you need is...

Are The Following Fish Ok Together In A Community Tank?

I agree with akasha  on the PH, while captive-raised fish tend to be more tolerant of less than Ideal PH, it's best to avoid extremes. While it would be helpful for us to know the species and numbers of your cories +tetras, it's not absolutely necessary. Much more helpful information would be...

In case anyone else wants to know, I just found a post on another forum by someone that said they keep 2 khuli loaches in a tank with the fluorite sand, and they frequently dig in it and are fine. But I'll keep a close eye on things anyway because after searching a while, it looks like some...

Does My Betta Have Fin Rot?

Agree wholeheartedly with the water change.   Do you have any plastic plants?  I found out about when researching for my fantail Guppies that some plastic plants can actually snag on and tear their fins.   One site recommended dragging any artificial plants across pantyhose to see it it was...

    My 2 Foot Rebuild

Great tank, I especially like the lush plants.   One note on your BN plecs though.   I  just read an article that says that adult bristlenoses will frequently hunt baby and juvinile cherry shrimp, and even take adults occasionally.   Although with all these plants, I wouldn't be surprised if the...

29 Gallon (110 Liter) Fancy Guppy And Shrimp Community Tank

Update: The Flourite Black sand Arrived three days ago, but I'm not going to put it in yet, not until I learn whether it could hurt the cories. My Gourami Is Unwell! Please Help!

Please change as much of the water as you can without beaching your gourami, as soon as possible. Aquarium Maintenance Gadgets

So far, I've been going old school, buckets and gravel vac. But if I'm ever able to get my "dream aquarium" (three guesses how many gallons, LOL) Then I'll probably use a diy drip irrigation flow-out system to make water changes automatic.

    Betta With Fin Rot

If it were me, I'd just set aside some water for testing and just go ahead and do a 50% water change, if you haven't just (as in within 36 hours) done one. It won't hurt, and there's a good chance it will help

    Was This Lfs Advice Correct?

Agreed, Mystery snails are messy, and like regular servings of fresh salad (live plants), that's why I didn't recommend one.. Additionally, most species are not truly tropical and without a "cooldown" period in the winter, their lifespan is greatly reduced, often to less than a year...
