I do notice an oily film form on the surface sometimes but i have an airline that i put into the bowl and it gets some surface agitation going which fixes it.

    Planted, filterless Shrimp bowl

Actually i'm not sure why i didn't think of this already but i've got some water sprite floating in my other tank that would look great in the background and should fill it out nicely! Might chuck it in tonight and see how it looks!

Yeh it's pretty bare back there aside from the Java fern. I want something to fill out the back area.

Thanks for the positive responses! :) Anyone have any suggestions as to which plants i could add to fill out the gaps? I want something that grows more bushy than tall but will grow without cO2.

Should I Replace Gravel with Sand?

I ended up using regular play sand as i had a bag left over from when i set up my daughters sand pit.

Looks like the cycle is finally finished! I ended up removing a couple of pieces of the driftwood. I want to add some more plants to fill it out towards the back but not sure what plants would go well there. The dwarf hairgrass is growing nicely and you can see the roots going nice and deep...

Can anyone share their experience with Pea Puffer?

From what I've read they are illegal to import into Australia but not illegal to keep once they're here and there are very few breeders.

Can anyone share their experience with Pea Puffer?

These fish are rare as rocking horse s**t here in Australia and when you do find them at the LFS they're dear as poison ($300+). I found a breeder here that sells them for about $225 per fish so I'm thinking about buying a few of them and breeding for profit. Cute little fish!

Should I Replace Gravel with Sand?

I've done the switch a couple of times now on 2 different tanks. Both times i left the fish in the tank and just removed all hardscape, used a cat litter shovel thing to scoop out the gravel and then added washed sand. It didn't harm the fish at all and everything was fine. Definitely recommend...

Thanks mate. I've got a heater mat under the bowl, it doesn't heat it up all that much but should make a couple of degrees difference from room temp.

Yeh i just thought my cycle was done and the soil was leaching ammonia so was a bit surprised the nitrite shot up again after disappearing a few weeks ago. Now it makes sense.

    Planted, filterless Shrimp bowl

So just tested ammonia and nitrites tonight, ammonia has finally gone down to 0ppm but my nitrites have jumped up again to 5.0ppm. So frustrating! Anyone know why it could have gone up? I've been doing water changes every couple of days. How do i get it down?

    22 gallon community tank

Today i decided to change a a few things in the tank. I moved the rock formations forward so there's less open space at the front and more room to pack out the back and sides with plants. Ended up adding some pink baby tears, lace fern and milfoil. Top is before, below is after.

    Rimless C. Miniopinna Betta Tank

I've been doing 50-60% WC every 2nd day for a bit over a week now and the ammonia is still high as. Oh well no rush, as long as you don't have the live stock waiting to go in then you can take your time. By the time the tank is cycled there should be plenty of biofilm and algae for the shrimpies...

Nice little tank for shrimp! I'm using ADA Amazonia in my planted bowl which i set up a couple of weeks ago and it's leeching ammonia like crazy! How's yours going?

    Ninja shrimp

The Ninjas arrived today! There's a couple of super tiny babies in the group which i suspect will not survive unless they find real good hiding spots. Let's see how they go!

    Ninja shrimp

Ok so i guess i won't be breeding them, like amanos the babies need brackish water to survive :( and the fish bowl idea is out to the door too, they need warm water and the bowl just has a heat mat which won't get the water up to the temps they need. Ah well they can hang out with my cherries in...

    Ninja shrimp

Thanks for that. I've done a bit of reading on them and haven't seen them around before so i might do a little breeding program! They apparently carry tons of eggs compared to neos but the babies are much smaller so more likely to get eaten by fish. If the aquasoil in my planted bowl stops...

    Ninja shrimp

Has anyone kept ninja shrimp? Otherwise known as North Australian Chameleon shrimp? I found some for sale so i ordered 10 but interested to hear if anyone on here has had them before? They apparently change colour depending on their surroundings and won't interbreed with my red cherries so i...

HELP! My Fish Keep Dying ?!

If you didn't swap the media over from the old filter to the new one and didn't add an ammonia source to start the cycle on the new set up then your tank would not be cycled. Also get a liquid test kit as the paper strips are pretty useless.
