Nutritious substrate for under gravel filter?

It would have been better if I had posted in the proper thread. ;) OT, I watch AquaGreen scaping content and was amazed that they build substrate with additives mixed in. Are you doing something like that with your gravel filter?

    Oase Biomaster 350 Thermo

While what you here is true here. However It isn't always true in all cases. Simply put there are tubing varieties that are designed not to kink or fold. One of those manufacturers is Tygon, a premium brand. They produce products for critical medical and intensive industrial applications. I...

    Oase Biomaster 350 Thermo

While I feel no joy in your Oase heater experience, I'm glad that I didn't pop for one. It seemed to be a good Idea initially as a backup to my monster Finnex heater, though. As far as main body filter mats, and why the included media seemed on the restrictive side to me even with the...

Is fish-keeping harder and diseases more prevalent now than it was 10 years ago?

:) All things considered, it doesn't take any intent for a population to grow. This is true for us and many other species. A modest amount of food and safety will do. I agree that viral activity may be Gaea's remedy for a world increasingly coated with humanity. Sort of mean, but understandable...

Is fish-keeping harder and diseases more prevalent now than it was 10 years ago?

Considering the essential nature of the threats complex lifeforms on this planet have, and do face, it's always just a matter of time. For instance, once Covid-19 is done, if it ever truly is, there WILL be something else to plaque us. I doubt I'll live long enough to see them but the massive...

Is fish-keeping harder and diseases more prevalent now than it was 10 years ago?

One of the more irritating things I've learned recently is that local chains have little to no idea what their suppliers do to ensure the health of the animals they sell. In fact they seem to view these creatures as inert SKU's (Stock-Keeping Units) and nothing more. The old mom and pop shops...

Is fish-keeping harder and diseases more prevalent now than it was 10 years ago?

Thanks, SF. I've read that some folks prefer a minimal amount of non-biological substrate, non-chem filtration (carbon or a replacements like Seachem Renew) to avoid removing meds, subdued lighting on a tightly attached canopy and very limited decorations. I'll pick up the tank next weekend and...

What do you recommend then for an appropriate quarantine period? Your opinion on tank size and accoutrement's for an isolation tank would be great as well. The 10g I've been using to medicate simply doesn't seem fair to fish being housed for extended periods.

Is fish-keeping harder and diseases more prevalent now than it was 10 years ago?

Wow, another pandemic. It looks like I found this forum at the right time, and seemingly lucked out. We just added two juvenile BR parrots using the old shot glass approach. Both seem to be fine currently. I can only speak for the US, but it seems like our tendency to over-medicate is coming...

Is fish-keeping harder and diseases more prevalent now than it was 10 years ago?

Thoughts? :) Simple, I need to take pre-introduction isolation seriously, just in case. After 40+ years of fish keeping I've had no major issues with disease, which has made me soft on needed procedures. One more thing to obsess over, I guess. Thank you for your observations!

    Filter cleaning

I'm not aware of a sponge filter/block replacement schedule. I just swapped out a 7-year old a fluval fx6. The sponges don't appear to have changed beyond the side flow rings developing a reddish hue over the years. (?) They started out white. I tend to clean filters when flow visibly...

I had a sump years ago, for a marine tank. I haven't considered one for my current freshwater tank until now.
