    Tropical waters in Illinois

We're about to experience the first subzero temperatures this year. -8 degrees tonight, to be exact. Is it me or does anyone else feel cool for being able to keep tropical fish alive and happy just feet away from such extreme conditions? ?

    leveling a 125 gallon tank

A poorly built slab cobbled together by a moron 40-years ago? Hey wait, I live there too! :)

    Where's the fun in that?

    Filters :)

Sounds like fun. In an easy to mess-up sort of way. ;)

    Replacing the black carbon sponge

As near as I can tell, carbon impregnated foam ages the same a tray full of carbon does. It adsorbs tiny particles, until it simply can't hold any more. It can't be cleaned by rinsing after a certain point. I replaced some 40PPI CI foam a week ago with 60PPI and it frankly works a lot better in...

    Filters :)

Speaking of such, is there a preferred way to cut filter foam in a precise way? I have two large blocks of 40PPI I'd like to see in use.

    Fluval fx4 and filteration help.

If you're going to use floss in a FX4 it should be in the last media tray that the water flows through before it's returned to the tank. Otherwise the filter is going to need a lot of service. If the 4 is configured the same way as the FX6, this approach will clean the slightly cloudy look from...

    Wavemaker Discussion

In general, or does this depend on the fish you keep?

    Wavemaker Discussion

They'd have to be very small for that to happen. Also, I was under the impression that many fish required a few hours of as close to pitch-black as they can get?

    Wavemaker Discussion

That's solid solution. You mentioned that you had tetras. Were they being tossed about too much prior to your fix?

    Wavemaker Discussion

Sorry FS, I saw what you want to do through the lense of my own limitations. Meaning I'm not a DIY sort of brother, mostly. :)

    Wavemaker Discussion

Wave maker The circulation pump I use doesn't have foam over the intake cone, which is what you looking for? Also, the functionality of the unit is a bit of a surprise for price.

Moving from internal filter to external filter

This is a great day for filtration in my house. A new filter I put in-line about 8 weeks ago is now fully active biologically. There's no hint of bacterial bloom and all parameter's are dark green. I sincerely hope that things are going as well for you guys.

Heating / Cooling range for a heater

Fun-and-games today. Since Ive become a catastrophist (from reading fish forums) when it comes to heater failures, I ordered and received a new Finnex heater tube. Since the used tube has been functional for over 2-years I thought taking it out of service and using it for an adequate backup made...

    Experience of In-Line Heaters?

UV sterilizers work the same way and for best function the one I had needed to be cleaned a LOT.

    Experience of In-Line Heaters?

That's good to hear. I assumed that it would be like having an inline UV sterilizer.

    Ozone purifier? Myth?

I used ozone on my one and only marine tank about 20-years ago. It worked just fine for removing gunk from the water but it irritated my dogs eye's no end. The stuff my fractionator pulled from the water was awful to clean too. So the whole contraption went the way of the dodo.

    Experience of In-Line Heaters?

Do in-lines have any special requirements as far as maintenance? Not that i can change heater mountings right now, but there's something elegant about mounting it in my cabinet.

    hygger heater

We've seen what might be the future of retail. It's sad and cool at the same time. Your house must be insolated well. We'd likely have to crank up the stove too under those conditions.

    hygger heater

Don't you love modern tech? Back when all I could do is set temp in an analog way and hope. Of course, I could have bought a separate thermometer, but I was young and was to busy to think. ;)

Are you in Europe, Wills? I'm just wondering why you'd have plug issues. Thanks for the testimonial.

    hygger heater

Did the failure kill any of your fish? I consider panic buying that turns out to be a positive experience as being notable. No disclaimer needed. One of the things I love about this hobby is that there are a thousand ways of getting things done, plus what can be dreamed up.

    hygger heater

That's just what I wanted to hear, mrs. Does your unit have an external thermostat? In all the time I've kept fish I've had one heater fail and it did so nicely. It didn't electrocute my fish or parboil them. It slowly lost its ability to heat my tank, that's all.
  27. 663

    hygger heater

I've always used a single heater in my aquariums since doing was fashionable when I started keeping fish. During recent times, and depending on the dimensions of the take, some have decided to use 2 heaters. Fail-over is also a (good) reason for using two units. Being genetically predisposed to...

Moving from internal filter to external filter

As long as the media is compatible you'll be fine swapping it into your 107. Be patient, test regularly during the process and things will work out great. If things happen to go south be prepared for water changes. The more I learn about aquarium planting the more complex it seems.
  29. 663

Moving from internal filter to external filter

Being that fish keeping is a hobby, some people need to believe that there's one way to do things, their way. From how any filters are used to the mats you stuff them with. It can be one argument after another. If this seems weird, look up some commentary on building and using gaming PC's.

Moving from internal filter to external filter

The internal filter has been runing for a good while? If that's the case, as another poster said, try to run both filters for a month or so to help get the 107 up and running. What media in the internal can you transfer to the 107. I'm curious what sort of substrate are you getting? Some...

    Aquarium canister filter

A LFS keeps 4 large black Piranha in a 500G tank. They're mostly black with red eyes and a few shiney scales like pacu. Just to make it spookier the tank has reduced lighting and has a sign saying "Don't tap the class or put you hand in." It's as close to a horror movie as you can get without CGI.

Using aquariums to get out of depression....

Something I've thought I should mention but didn't know if it would be taken well, is participating in aggressive activity. By this I don't mean screwing around with other people. I live by the addage "hands off other people and their property." Keeping this in mind has always worked for me...

    leveling a 125 gallon tank

    leveling a 125 gallon tank

I'm embarrassed. I didn't come close to considering mounting my tank with this degree of precision. It's the same size as yours MC, which means about 1000 pounds+ when loaded with materials and setup. I'm suprised that the two very strong young men ($50/per tip) who brought it in didn't suggest...

Moving from internal filter to external filter

I love a good project, especially when it includes aspects that I have little affinity for. Like hardscaping! ;) How long has your 107 been inline? If it's been less that 4-6 weeks, I'd try to encourage more bio-growth before depending on the 107 alone. Sure, if the media from the in-tank filter...

Moving from internal filter to external filter

Boxcar, care to offer more specifics on your tank and plans for it?
  40. 663

Moving from internal filter to external filter

Depending on load, of course, you shouldn't have an issue migrating to your 107 alone. Be sure to monitor your water until you're confident your BIO filter is up to the challenge. Be prepared to change some water if need be. Please post a pic when possible.
