We use a service called nodeping that monitors the status of the site. If the site goes down, my phone starts blowing up with chimes. :)

We got an alert last night the site went down and reported the issue shortly after. There was a switch that went offline at our hosting facility and unfortunately it took them several hours to get the equipment fixed.
