Using your substrate is a good idea because you'll have tons of beneficial bacteria living in it. You could always cap it with your new substrate if you were planning on using something different

Fin rot is usually always a symptom connected with poor water quality, increasing your water changes should help with that. I've seen pearl gouramis get as big as 4 inches (10 cm) so I'd personally be reluctant to keep it in 10 gallons

If you're too busy to do water changes for one tank, how do you expect to find time to do water changes for 2 tanks? Maybe just concentrate on improving the water quality with the tank you have up and running already 🤪

I love to watch them too, they're faster on foot than other aquatic snails I've had and they get into some strange places!

They bury themselves into the substrate and play dead...or at least they do in my tank! I've never seen them at the surface though
