Done with neon tetras, can you recommend other tankmates?

Thank you very much I guess I should uproot it, or at least a couple fronds. These have grown painfully slow until now, a good 2 months, and I don't see any propagation happening.

Pictures of the small plant, I have no idea what it is, of someone can help identify it, I'd appreciate it

How do water changes for Ponds work?

There's me struggling with a psycho gourami and overeating cory females, then there's this guy training these oversized dumb goldfish to "play" football.

Done with neon tetras, can you recommend other tankmates?

Yep, have duckweed and "giant" duckweed. Ahs had algae issues that by now are almost done with (this picture was from a month ago) I tweaked light intensity and duration and the algae went away, it was growing on all the plants and starting to be a problem on the glass too. Lol, the commoners...

    Big problems in Rio land

Always a scapegoat, getting a company to honor warranty work is a rarity these days. I'd blast them on any and all social media and call whatever your local consumer protection agency is over there in the UK. >not a structural component >holds the tank shape I'm not an engineer, but this is...

Done with neon tetras, can you recommend other tankmates?

Angels as a centerpiece are out. Adding a school of cherry barbs seems like a great option. I also had looked at harlequin rasboras, and was even contemplating fancy guppies, although I recall reading and have observed in my tank at least that the neons can get a bit nippy on occasion. There's...

Done with neon tetras, can you recommend other tankmates?

Found out later that indeed, those neons had literally arrived at the store the same day I got them Answering specifically because I appreciate the great feedback I get here. The quarantine tank has floaters (duckweed and giant duckweed) some short (carpeting) plants which name I forget, 1...

By breeding guppies, am I “subjecting generations of animals to rape”?

No justice, no peace. Fish lives matter.

Done with neon tetras, can you recommend other tankmates?

Fair and clear enough. I know the difference between "living" and "thriving". I'd never knowingly put any living, let alone sentient being, in just "living" conditions. Thanks!!

    venus flytrap care

You seem intent on making me look like the crazy neighbor at my building. AND I AM getting that 50g tank next week, will build a stand for it myself, I anticipate moving my 29g fish to it sometime in the summer after it's all set, and then we'll see what I do next with that one.

    Serious problem...

Unless you're getting some ammonia above 0.25, I wouldn't worry, you're a legendary fish keeper and legends and songs will be written for you

I've got many plants, 3 tanks, a rabbit, maybe starting in May a hamster. And just now I'm hunting down a 50 gal tank. I guess I'm on my way.

Afaik it doesn't necessarily "need" insects to live, but it will certainly thrive with them.

    venus flytrap care

I've seen these here in New England as indoor plants, as long as they get good enough sun. My son is asking for one, and I want to have it somewhere in his room window, it gets good sun. Just researching more about how to care for it, it's not like insects are just flying/craeling around and it...

I have to say that besides getting the fish, cycling was a fun time. Then again I'm a numbers nerd 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Help in cycling my tank

I think I've read before that yes, putting some food will generate ammonia to feed the beneficial bacteria. If what I've read (and understood off it) is correct the bacterial colony "self-regulates" its size depending on the tank's conditions.

Done with neon tetras, can you recommend other tankmates?

The reading I've done the last couple of days seems contradictory. Some, like you @Byron clearly say these do better in numbers, others indicate that they do well alone as a showcase piece on community tanks. I do want something that pops (thought a big enough school of neons would do), I also...

    Thoughts on Heater Free Aquaria

I trawl the forums just for fun. I'm sure I'll keep some of this knowledge and someday will apply it if I keep increasing my number of tanks and stay at the hobby long enough. This will be the first summer with the tanks in my place, one out of 3 heaters is unplugged, and the other 2 have not...

    Thoughts on Heater Free Aquaria

I only have 3 tanks, a 10g with a single dwarf gourami there (and 2 snails and plants) and a 29g which I'm still stocking, a few snails and 12 fish in it total at the time. A third tank is planted but set up as plant propagator/quarantine, so no fish. That being said, the spring thaw is finally...

Done with neon tetras, can you recommend other tankmates?

I'm kinda torn on the acclimation issue. I don't want to go Ivan Drago on these critters, nor do I think an extended period (like yours) makes a significant difference, then again as you said personal preferences and what works for one hobbyist doesn't necessarily go for another . Bottom line I...

Done with neon tetras, can you recommend other tankmates?

I think I've made up my mind. I'll add a handful of ottos so that little guy can have some pals, then I'll get two young angels so they grow in the tank that already has everyone else established. I've read that angels can be ok on their own (single) or that they do ok as well when paired...

Done with neon tetras, can you recommend other tankmates?

You crack me up @itiwhetu So I went today, took the dead fish and got a store credit. All the neons were gone, a carcass was behind though, stuck on some fake plant decoration. I forgot to answer your question about how "planted" the tank is. The quarantine tank has a few floaters (duckweed...

Done with neon tetras, can you recommend other tankmates?

Yeah, that. Forgot to add it. 7 to 7.2 across all tanks. This quarantine tank specifically is at 7 right now and since I had to be up early to pick up my mom from the airport I checked and the last 2 neons are gone. The cory remains in there for another few days then I'll move him to the main...

The neons and the cory are in the quarantine tank, no bullying, they just were sickly/inbred/stressed fish, unfortunately

    Snail infestation

I had a picture and video of my assassin "eating" a pellet once. After seeing how they operate, I wouldn't consider him a threat to ANY other tank inhabitant that's faster or bigger than him. Only exception to that would be their ability to stalk and coordinate attacks on bigger snails, but...

    Snail infestation

The shrimp are too quick to be caught by the assassin. Despite its ominous name it's more of a slow leech, tbh; it stalks (and often misses) pest snails trudging right onside itself, and it needs significant time to eat its intended meal.
  33. outofwater

Done with neon tetras, can you recommend other tankmates?

Size is might. Might is right 🤣 the two MS I have are probably 5 times as big as the assassin at this point, he won't bother, and he has enough grub with the pests (which he has brought under control, mostly) and the occasional scavenging of leftover food at surface level. Not that the fat...

Done with neon tetras, can you recommend other tankmates?

The assassin keeps tabs on pest snails. The mystery ones are too big for him to try to tackle at this point. It's only one of them, so it's not like they can get jumped on by a band of marauding assassins. He tried once when they were all the same size, the mysteries are total units now and...

    Help in cycling my tank

My guess is that your bacteria starved, which is why I had asked if you were feeding them with ammonia or if the plant "food" contained ammonia. That would also explain why you're reading nitrites and no ammonia. There's a chance that some bacteria is still there. If you add ammonia and after a...

    Help in cycling my tank

There are many views on "bacteria in a bottle" products, but in my experience seachem stability has worked great.. it helped me cycle my tanks in 2 or 3 weeks tops, and I've cycled 3 of them already, 1 from scratch, 2 with help of "seeding bacteria" from sponges and other hard surface things...

    Help in cycling my tank

I'm a bit out of my depth here. The specialized nutrition seems obviously great for your plants, I'm not sure if that provides ammonia too, or where your bacteria is getting it from, but clearly you have bacteria at work because your nitrites are there. As Colin mentioned the nitrites should...

    Help in cycling my tank

Welcome, thats a nice looking tank and setup! As for the cycle, I would seem it's "halfway there". How often are you testing? Have you seen any changes in the nitrite numbers? How often are you "seeding" ammonia and in what concentration? I don't use co2 on my tanks, so can't comment on...

Done with neon tetras, can you recommend other tankmates?

The main tank, 29g, is doing fine, nothing being added to it yet. The 10g quarantine tank only had plants until now that I decided to add these fish, and they'll be there for another 8 days before I move them to the 29g Thanks, can't seem to find ANY ottos anytime I visit the stores...
