    Adding more substrate?

Glad to help🙂 I know they do it because that's how they eat (sifting the sand) but I do believe they genuinely just love digging the sand for the heck of it. Mine sometimes literally dig small "holes" just because. Cories are something else... the random darting up to the surface foe a gulp of...

Why is MTS a real thing?

First off, mods, if this is better somewhere else, please move thread accordingly. So, it is a real question, what drives MTS. When I first started (last Christmas) I read the acronym, chuckled and went on with my first tank. Two months later I found myself with 3 running tanks on hand, at...

Going to be Away for 3 Weeks

The previous reply by @AdoraBelle Dearheart hits all the points. The one issue with having someone feed your fish is that you'll see stories where even when the process was detailed in advance and the food portioned out, sometimes they still manage to overfeed the fish and cause issues ranging...

Getting back into the hobby after 30+ yrs. Something to do with my daughter

Welcome and good luck, it's great when the kid is actively involved, kudos for even mixing the money aspect, never too early to expose kids to money management

    Adding more substrate?

You definitely should change to sand since you have cories. No, a total change won't hurt the fish, again, just be sure to use aquarium-safe sand. I was in the same exact situation when I started my tank. I see you're in Florida, go to home depot and get quikrete play sand, a 50 lb bag will be...

    Adding more substrate?

As long as it's aquarium-safe sand, and you rinse it before you put it in to prevent getting your water murky for hours or a couple of days, it won't give you much grief and definitely won't harm the fish.

Can anyone help me identify this on my driftwood??

Give the post a few more hours or a couple of days, there are folks here with far more knowledge and experience than me that will chime in and you'll get useful info. Good luck 👍🏻

Length of Roots exceeds Depth of Substrate

This may be dumb question, but when you planted them they weren't sticking out right? I have a sword plant in sand too, about the same depth, and the root network has extended all around the tank, but haven't seen any going upwards, and the tank has been running for about 8 months now.

Can anyone help me identify this on my driftwood??

Can't comment on the fish (cichlids) or your plans for aquascaping, but that looks like fungus to me. Was this store-bought or did you collect the driftwood yourself? You might need to remove it, boil it and scrub it before you add it back, afaik some surface fungus may not affect fish, others...

Sand Vs Gravel? Yes, this conversation again. Lol

Depends on the fish. I learned that cories need sand, so if you have those, you must have sand. Other than that, I still have both and like them both. I find neither easier or harder to clean. Other than the needs of rhe fish, plants are the other thing to keep in mind when selecting substrate...

Beautiful and strange fish while visiting Florida

Thanks!! My son was immediately asking for us to setup a salt water tank after visiting this place. Lol. One day, maybe. He loved the Picasso and we both always liked puffers and lionfish. That gurnard thing is nuts, just crazy. Looks like a creature from a video game. I'd keep that! Anywho...

Beautiful and strange fish while visiting Florida

Visiting family, went to this place in West Palm Beach called the cox science center. Saw the strangest fish I've seen (not that I've seen too much anyway) but that white thing that looks like a cross between a small albino alligator and some fish is just nuts. Couldn't find a plaque...

    Sad to see this...

In the case of the glass tiled place.. don't fish eventually get used to noisy/busy environments? Crammed tanks at restaurants seems the norm, and those intoo find annoying and careless. Then again, these are people in the food business , the tanks are decorations and one would hope that at...

Do I just give up at this point

If the hobby stops being something that brings you joy, then a break might be needed. Not everything goes your way all the time, but like everything else in life, sometimes we go thru cycles that need to end and maybe restart later on.

2 months - 15 fish dead! What am I doing wrong?

There seem to be 3 variables left to discard: 1. Food, as @Lynnzer suggested 2. Something leeching from inside the tank 3. Something outside the tank causing contamination You (op) have addressed 3, and somewhat 2 as well. Yes, all you have inside the tank is from the pet store but things...

    How’s the weather?

2 months - 15 fish dead! What am I doing wrong?

Please post actual water test results, with pictures if possible. Also post specific water temperature and what volume of water - and how often - you change it. And let us know what fish you have, which ones you've lost, and post a picture of the entire tank as well, and tank size.

Change water once a week VS continuous drip.

I feel personally attacked. 🤣 Interesting thread. I would go for a system like this one only when I get to the point where I have a fish room, multiple tanks and a source of clean water like @itiwhetu described. For tap water which has to be treated with chemicals, and not being a commercial...

    Problem with Neon Tetra?

Consider this: if the fish is eating and behaving as "normal" as it and your other fish have been doing so far, quarantining it might stress this single fish. And if indeed there's "something" already in the water, at this point your entire tank is "infected". I suggest a major water change...

    Problem with Neon Tetra?

It might be nothing, it could be something. Not trying to sound like a smartass but me and others in the forum have gone thru the same thing and in my case it was deadly to some, in others it didn't amount amount anything. In both cases we couldn't get to a consensus on what it was. Keep an...

Proposed USA regulations ending fish keeping

Someone mentioned fishkeepers being good taxpayers. Maybe that's why the irs is hiring 90k new agents and they'll be armed and ready for "dangerous, possibly life-threatening duties". That aside, these laws that get packaged altogether so that pork nonsense is passed along with the few useful...

Trying to seduce a stray kitten

Street animals are hardier and more resourceful than you give them credit for. OP here is trying to do something very noble, and trapping a kitten in a ventilated garage for a few hours won't kill it any more than it being outside exposed to any other feral or wild animals. You won't get many...

Trying to seduce a stray kitten

Open a can of tuna and trap it. That's the only way. "street kittens" become street smart pretty quick or die, and that includes distrust of humans. If you don't trap it, it might get close when hungry, but that's about it, and as you found out you'll get the claws if you try anything else...

On the one hand you seem like you genuinely want to learn and do good for the animals, on the other hand you seem to rush into some things and apparently your parents are not fully supportive of your interest in the hobby, whether that's what causes you to rush or not, I can't say and it's...

Well, the day has come. Getting him acclimated to the big tank's water temp. We leave in 2 weeks for vacation, I thought it'd be best to put him there now and see how he behaves in the coming days, make sure he's established himself well before we leave

Maybe this isn't the best hobby for clumsy people

Lol comes with the territory. I've been at it for about 8 months now, and was just doing a water change and ended up spilling some water from the siphon onto my head (don't ask). So, don't despair, something will always happen even as you become an "expert" at the most mundane parts of the hobby

Strips are better than nothing. For the liquid test set,, if you want to save it's better to compare and shop online, they're always more expensive in regular brick and mortar stores, even the large chains.
