    Sexing help

Can’t be certain with the first two pictures, but #3 is a female and #4 is a male.

Did I lose the honey gourami sexing lottery?

The dorsal fins of males are mostly yellow; female’s dorsals are edged with orange. Females also have a plumper body and grow larger.

What do you put in fry tanks?

I keep a good-sized clumpJava moss in my fry tanks, which provides micro fauna for the babies to snack on.

Did I lose the honey gourami sexing lottery?

90% certain the first fish is a male, #2 is definitely a female, so yes, they’re most likely a pair.

Need help identifying Pelvicachromis teaniatus variant

I’d say they’re the Nigeria yellow form of P. taeniatus.

    Congo tetra compatibility

Fully grown Congos can easily swallow CPDs and emerald dwarf rasboras. Nematobrycon species would make much better tankmates.

Is Phoebe a Honey Gourami or have I been fooled?

It’s definitely a female Trichogaster labiosa, or thick-lipped gourami. It’s the line-bred red morph; the wild type is almost never seen in shops. It’s not a hybrid. I’ve never seen a labiosa x chuna cross in all my decades in the hobby.

Question Regarding Culturing Food For Fry (guppy specifically)

Grindal worms are very easy to culture and most fish go absolutely insane for them.

    What Apistogramma is this

    It’s a male Apistogramma hongsloi.

    Dwarf cichlid recommendation

I highly recommend Dicrossus maculatus, the Spade-tailed Checkerboard Cichlid, if you’re able to get a hold of them. They’re very inquisitive and are always out and about exploring their surroundings. I kept and bred mine in a 20 high, although I did have to remove the fry to another tank in...

Drape fin barbs and Odessa barbs

Odessa barbs are extremely active and can be rowdy. It won’t make a difference if you keep them in larger numbers. Snakeskin or six- banded barbs would be better companions for pearl gouramis.

Which live plant would you recommend for betta fry so I can give them infusoria

Fry can find microfauna in water sprite and Java moss. My Betta smaragdina fry found enough infusoria in these plants until they were large enough to take BBS.

Where to buy wild type gold/Chinese barbs

I had a group of them many years ago. Beautiful, bulletproof fish, much nicer than the gold form, which IMHO is kind of blah. It’s getting difficult to find wild-type ANYTHING these days, which is a pity.

Where to buy wild type gold/Chinese barbs

The Wet Spot in Portland OR has them.

What can you guys tell me about these boys???

It’s a mature male Bedotia madagascarensis, the usual species found in shops. They’re usually sold when they’re much smaller.

The size difference between my neon tetras

Females are quite a bit larger than males when fully grown.

Glo fish where does it end????

The big box stores devote 6 or more tanks to various types of glofish, leaving little room for less common species. Unfortunately, consumers can’t seem to get enough of these abominations. And don’t get me started on “balloon“ fish!

    Electric blue ram - sex?

Hard to tell from the photo, but the stocky body shape makes me think that it’s a female.

    fishkeeping books.

I have a very beat-up copy of the 19th edition that I purchased back in 1978. It’s the only one of my many aquarium books that includes the pronunciation of scientific names.

    Pearl Danio illness

It’s a symptom of extreme old age. 5 years is ancient for a pearl danio.

    Male or female honey?

You have two different species. The red one looks like a female red morph thicklip gourami and the yellow one is a male gold honey gourami

    Honey Gourami tank.

I have six female honey gouramis available. They’re the brown wild type, not the gold variety. I bought a group, hoping for both sexes, but they all turned out to be girls. I’m willing to ship.

Has anyone here ever kept a betta pair successfully?

They didn’t seem cramped until their offspring started growing up, which I later sold. Betta smaragdina, and for that matter, B splendens, feel more secure in smaller, shallow, densely planted tanks with gentle water movement.

Has anyone here ever kept a betta pair successfully?

I kept a pair of Betta smaragdina in a heavily planted 5.5 gallon without any problems. They even spawned numerous times, the young growing up with their parents. They’re lovely fish - it’s a shame they’re not more readily available.

    Hello from Brooklyn!

Hi! I got my first solo aquarium way back in 1976 and I’m still very active in the hobby. Along the way I’ve made many mistakes and learned some valuable lessons. I’m still learning and willing to share the knowledge I’ve accumulated over my MANY years as an aquarist.
