At my wits end with my water chemistry...... Hoping to get a sanity check

I wanted to provide an update to all the water mess I've gone through and since this thread ended up having a ton of info, I figured I'd post here. Just for reference, as I go into mentioning quantities of an additive, it will be based on 20 gallons of RO or RO/DI water. In the beginning, I...

    Water changes causing fish deaths

Well I’m going to dose a lot less and see if it helps as well. As Colin said too, I’m keeping soft water fish and may not need the kh up so would like to balance the ph lower. Main reason is at 8 I have no way to safely introduce fish into the tank when buy them. Local shop has a 7 ph and don’t...

I don’t dose daily. It would cost a fortune. Just dose at water change.

    Water changes causing fish deaths

Yea. I have that too. I have what I’m calling my final results. The alkaline buffer may get you your kh but it is definitely what is pushing my ph to 8. I just took today’s samples. After 48 hours: Straight RO is still 6.4 ph Treated RO with equilibrium and alkaline/acid is now 8 Treated with...

    Water changes causing fish deaths

Right now, all I have are the tetras and one Amano shrimp and 1 Pleco. I am keeping the tank to all soft water fish. Eventually will probably get to angelfish again. Since I decided to go to the plant route, I just picked up a CO2 art system and I’m going to very slowly introduce the CO2 week by...

    Water changes causing fish deaths

So I just went to look at Seachem's website and it is a sodium bicarbonate buffer. So my RO water seems to raise to about 6.4 after a day. I'm going to test again today to see if it went up more or if that is where it rests. I still have my 3 water samples and testing each day; 1 just RO, 1...

They are different. Equilibrium is for gh and alkaline / acid to establish and buffer kh

    Water changes causing fish deaths

Well, so far the treated RO water has risen. PH quite a bit. I will see what happens with the fluorite added.

    Water changes causing fish deaths

Latest: Straight RO with no minerals added after 24 hours RO with Equilibrium and alkaline/acid buffer. It’s about 7.8. More orange than brown but pic throws it off. I added fluorite to a 3rd sample to test tonight. Also my hospital tank with the same treated ro water is still 6.8 but...

I'll have more data today. I'll test the samples I left out overnight. Test the tank and use one more sample with the addition of the flourite.

    Water changes causing fish deaths

Root tabs and ferts have not impacted. PH was stuck rising to 8 well before I even used ferts or tabs..
  16. S

    Water changes causing fish deaths

That's what I'm planning to do. I'm going to add some to the test cups I have out now. I'm going to monitor them then add flourite to see if it jumps.

    Water changes causing fish deaths

I have not, but have compared it to a digital PH tool and it matches from kit to PH test tool. Also, last night was what really got me going with my quarantine tank reading 6.8 and my main tank reading 8, from the same kit. I checked with the low PH and high PH solutions just to make sure it...

    Water changes causing fish deaths

now my mind is really going nuts. For craps and giggles I tested my hospital tank. Same water. PH is 6.8. WTH. If that is the case then it is my substrate in the main tank. That is seachem flourite. Seachem says it won’t change PH but so do half their products say they won’t do something...

Nope. Only time I ran it was at the end of a worm treatment to clear any remaining meds.

    Water changes causing fish deaths

And there is the issue. All water is treated exactly the same. It always comes out the same roughly ph of 7. The tank is always 8. That’s the same water I treated with yet always goes up. Even the treated water. I’ll post up again tomorrow after both samples have sat for a day then show the rise...

    Water changes causing fish deaths

Yup. I dose at a ratio of 2:1 for a ph of roughly 7. In my photos, the second pic is after I put in alkaline and acid buffer.

    Water changes causing fish deaths

Yea. I can’t mix tap. Y well water is really bad. It’s brackish water basically. I have to use Seachem Equilibrium to remineralize.

I use a TDS meter as well. Without DI it’s about 14. With it is 0. The unit recommends 30 to 50psi. These two pics show pure RO and treated RO with equilibrium Straight RO RO with equilibrium and alkaline/acid buffer

    Water changes causing fish deaths

I have. I took a ro sample in a cup and let it sit. After just 24 hours it raised to 8. Nothing else except the water. Did it also in my old qt tank and that didn’t even have substrate in it. My kh remains 5 at all times after buffer added. PH still goes up. Only thing I can attribute it to is...

    Water changes causing fish deaths

I moved to RO/DI water. Was losing a ton of fish. Tons of trial and error and in the end came down to (most likely) how bad my well water is. There was bacteria in it. Tons of CO2 which when offgassed brought PH from 7 to 8.4 overnight. Then my water changes weren't often or big enough...

Ok, RO water only, and tons of plants… what do I likely need to add to the water for both the fish, and plants???

Your's and mine both. I have a 100 GPD Aquatic Life RO Buddie system. Definitely a lot less than 100 per day, but it is a budget friendly system. Knowing I will be sticking to the RO solution, I may get a nicer unit like Bulk Reef supplies 150 per day..

Ok, RO water only, and tons of plants… what do I likely need to add to the water for both the fish, and plants???

I set up 2 large trash cans to gather my water with the RO attached to one of them. Works well. Just means though I have 2 large trash cans in the room for a few days haha.

    Co2 injection

My only observation is that hose barely on the check valve. Can you put that on more?

Ok, RO water only, and tons of plants… what do I likely need to add to the water for both the fish, and plants???

My well water was opposite. It was horrible for my fish. Naturally it was 20 plus degree gh. I had to run it through a softener, which of course then adds other treatments into the water. Then after a day, PH would raise to beyond 8 which I'm certain is CO2 offgassing so basically natural PH...

My god, I love the Chihiros WRGB 2.

I really like the color that is put out. Of course everyone is going to have their own likes/dislikes. I saw the Pro and it would be too much for my tank. Even with the white, they state its main function is for deeper aquariums. Plus, as you mention, even more expensive than the 2.

My god, I love the Chihiros WRGB 2.

This is the link I bought it from https://www.chihirosaquaticstudio.com/products/chihiros-wrgb-ii-10th-edition-led-light I was trying to open the site, but can't get it to open from work. I got the 120. Fits a 48" wide aquarium with or without rim.

My god, I love the Chihiros WRGB 2.

As I keep learning more about fishkeeping and aquariums in general, I came to learn my Aqueon light is not the best when it comes to plants. I know there are a ton of options and was hesitant to purchase such an expensive light like Chihiros, but man........ I got it yesterday and can't...

    Fish expel live white worms

Definitely follow @Colin_T advice. I'm treating my tank currently with Flubendazole. I don't know how many fish were affected, but going through the whole tank to cover my bases. About to start another dose tonight.

    Lost second fish

I switched to RO due to my well water being so bad. Who'd have thought getting into fish keeping would have led to discoveries in actually how bad my well is. My well was producing water at 20 dgh, had bad bacteria in it and still has an excess of CO2. I bought a RO/DI system and the DI...

Guys. Need help here. Angelfish all of a sudden developed a sore spot.

We had multiple Honey and Dwarf. All died. One Honey lost all its fins, the other had hole in head. Can't remember what got the other Honey and Dwarfs. I'm down to Tetras and my Pleco now. I love Tetra's and plan on just sticking to them. Once I can get this tank to a spot I feel is good...

Guys. Need help here. Angelfish all of a sudden developed a sore spot.

I euthanized him this morning. I also woke up to a dead dwarf Gourami. He was alive last night when I went to bed, but I could tell something was already wrong with him because of his faster breath that had been happening for a while. The remainder of my fish seem to be OK after the initial...

Guys. Need help here. Angelfish all of a sudden developed a sore spot.

I’ve had him about 10 months. 3 shiners in total. All died differently. He is basically barrel rolling through the tank. I tried to get a few pics. Yesterday he was fine. One of the other ones developed a crooked spine and sores which is why I thought TB before then the other had popeye real bad...
