I'm guessing you can only have one pair per tank when you are determining if they breed true? So maybe you mix in other dissimilar species so you can save on total tank numbers but its mind boggling

You can improve things a bit by thermally coupling to the ground ie bury it., I cannot say how much of an improvement, somone might know these thermal co efficients to calculate...

FWIW I found better quality guppies in either 1- specialty shops, ie " shrimp" vendors, plant vendors or 2) clearly family run businesses.
