What is the hardness of Amsterdam water?

Thanks @Aqua67. She tested it at 8 with test strips, which are not accurate, but her local store in Amsterdam told her it was ‘hard’. Hence the confusion.

When did Camallanus nematodes arrive in the hobby?

When I started keeping fish in 1972 it was already well established in the Singapore farms. I’ve been treating my own newly acquired fish for them occasionally ever since then. When I joined the trade in about 1990 I saw just how rife it was. The UK gets it’s fish from Singapore. Always has. A...

Who names new species of fish?

A lot of them have now been named (the L-number tends to remain after they’re described, just for reference). But the list is still growing. There’s also over 300 C-numbers and CW-numbers for Corydoras. Similar story there….

    Giant betta question

Depends on the species. B. anabatoides is less aggressive than B. splendens, but nearly all Giant Bettas you’re likely to see in stores are just large B. ‘splendens’ (the domestic version, which is a hybrid) and just as aggressive.

    Tips on treating camallanus worms

I was treating new imports for visible Camallanus worms every week for twenty years while I was in the trade. Here’s what I always did. Add Waterlife Sterazin as per the instructions. Nothing else. It worked every time.

Didn’t TFH fund a lot of collecting expeditions into the Amazon? I’ll pay for your trip if you name one after me….

Who names new species of fish?

“Traditionally, the person who first describes a newfound plant or animal is entitled to name it,” So anyone in theory can do the work, and if the work determines it’s a new species, the describer gets to name it. And the name is valid until/unless proven otherwise.

🐡 FOTM Aquabarb - December 2023 Fish of the Month Winner (Cichlids)

Congratulations. :) From what I’ve heard and read, the Electric Blue Acara is probably a hybrid between Andinoacara pulcher and the Blue Ram, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi.

Who names new species of fish?

This is very much a question, not an answer. It has always interested me but I know very little about it. Let’s say I discover a new species on a collecting trip. What happens next? I assume specimens are sent or taken to a museum(?) so that we have them available for further study. Holotypes...

    Hoplo Catfish?

Corys would be better, yes, especially in a planted tank. Adult Hoplos would look a bit cramped imo too… :)

    Hoplo Catfish?

A very underrated fish that is a joy to keep. That was my experience with them. The related Diadema and Callichthys are the same. Keep a few together. They’re totally peaceful and won’t harm anything except food. You can think of them as giant Corys. They grow big though, 6”+

How to clean and maintain a large aquarium (20 gallons or more)?

You never need to do a “complete clean”. In fact it’s probably a bad thing, because an aquarium is a living ecosystem that carries on maturing over the months and years (in ways I don’t fully understand or feel the need to), and a complete clean would be like starting again in some respects. A...

Half my Ram's face is black!

That’s interesting. I can’t remember if I’ve seen it on others or not… And when I said it can kill, that could well have been caused by the bigger issue that caused the damage (the infection, or secondary infection, or whatever) rather than the discolouring itself. Mostly the discolouring...

Half my Ram's face is black!

Nerve damage. The Tropical Fishlopaedia (every aquarist should have a copy) says this… Abnormally dark coloration is a very common sign of stress but may also be seen during many other diseases… Heightened or otherwise abnormal coloration may be a sign of damage to the central nervous system...

    A singular pristella tetra 🤔

The fins on Roseys and Pristellas are very different in colour/pattern. It will be ‘ok’ but imo it will be at least slightly stressed. If you added a group of its species it would jump ship and join them….

    Fry and adults

I think it’s also about population sizes and bioloads. There was a paper about this that I read and could never find again. They put different numbers of adult guppies (from 2 to 100) in about 20 identical tanks, and after a few months every tank had (more or less) the same number of adults...

I don’t normally diss a fish, but I have to agree. Just so you know, @rebe (if you don’t already), black skirts look lovely when they’re small and black, but they grow up to be pale grey and lazy/boring. Apologies black skirts.

Can a fish out and out just not like a light?

They are a species that benefits from physical contact with others of their own species, so we must assume they’re stressed on their own. Living instead of dying does not prove they’re being kept correctly.

Hamsters are illegal in Australia. Why?

Apple snails are legal again? I didn’t know. Off topic a bit, but when I lived in Australia as a child my dad worked way out in the outback miles from anywhere. One day a blue budgie (domestic strain) befriended him. Escaped or released? We never found out. He brought it home and it loved him...

Can a fish out and out just not like a light?

Ropefish very much need to be kept in a group, as you presumably know if you’ve had them before. I would not expect normal behaviour from a lone specimen. Having said that, it’s not unknown for fish to behave differently when the light spectrum or brightness is changed.

    What are you cooking?

US food is actually very expensive. In the UK a lb of fresh tuna steaks is £5.70, which is about $6.84. Pretty much all our food is a lot cheaper, right across the board.
