I tested my other tank to compare, as it would be similar to what my betta tank was before. It isn't a precise color but it is sort of between 7.0 and 7.2 ish.  So, the pH hasn't changed as much as I thought in my betta tank.

Around 7.2-7.4.  I don't check that often as it is quite stable.  But the substrate that I bought did say it would change.

Ammonia is perfect, there is a chance pH has changed though with the new substrate.  I shall check right now to see where it is. pH 6.8

Uh oh.  I hope that is not so.   I couldn't manage the stocking over the filter, but I did have craft mesh and managed to sew it in place using yarn.  I hope that is the problem.   What things tend to spark tail biting if that is it?

I go first thing in the morning too.  I want to see how many fish might have died in the same tank before deciding to buy.  I also like to know if they have a quarantine period and so on (if they don't I don't buy ever, Pets At Home told me they put fish for sale straight away, for example).

No, the food seems to get eaten up by the fish and the rest grabbed by shrimp and last bits by snails.  My food is a lighter color and this debris is a very dark brown.

That sounds like the most likely scenario.  If it looked like grains of salt and didn't disappear I'd worry it was ich.

Goldfish... and of course that went badly.... eventually guppies and that sparked the real fish keeping.   I dream of having a pond one day.

Ah shrimp pellets!  I forgot entirely that those exist.  Those would likely work out entirely better, I could drop them into the snail house and if the shrimp carry them away my betta would probably not notice, especially with the new substrate I will be adding in a few days.

I love my little norman's lampeyes, they aren't very colorful but I find them little and cute.  They like a pH of 6-8.

Well there you go! I should always post what seems to be wrong here... my fish like to suddenly prove me wrong!  Today, after a couple weeks of my fish living separate lives.... Bumblebee is sporting a dark black belly and Daisy is following him around!  Yay!  LOL

Yes, that's the one.  I think I was buying a 200ml bottle (somewhere around that size anyway), it just always seemed to go so quickly.  I liked the idea of Seachem flourish because the dosage was smaller so the bottle would last longer... but it doesn't seem to do the same job.     EI dosing...

Is that a name of an actual product?  I've never heard of this.

I used to use a fertilizer by JBL that was ok but the problem was it came in small bottles and needed so much that I was always going out and buying it... so I wanted to switch.  I bought Seachem Flourish and since... well, my plants are suffering.   Can you recommend a good fertilizer...

I do think of my fish as mentally a bit more simple than myself.   My tank is big enough for more.  I have previously (in the beginning) had a trio and that didn't work out at all... my extra female ended up getting harassed to death... they seem to get along better in pairs for me.

Time for a little update and new photo.   The mysterious white raised spot Firefly had on his fin went away, so no idea what that was.   I figure he must have grown back all his fins now so here is a new photo.
