    Lost Tail Overnight

I tested my other tank to compare, as it would be similar to what my betta tank was before. It isn't a precise color but it is sort of between 7.0 and 7.2 ish.  So, the pH hasn't changed as much as I thought in my betta tank.

    Lost Tail Overnight

Around 7.2-7.4.  I don't check that often as it is quite stable.  But the substrate that I bought did say it would change.

    Lost Tail Overnight

Ammonia is perfect, there is a chance pH has changed though with the new substrate.  I shall check right now to see where it is. pH 6.8

    Lost Tail Overnight

Oh no!  He has lost more tail this afternoon that was there this morning.  Since I covered the filter yesterday it isn't possible that it was that.  Again... so sign of tail bits stuck anywhere... or anywhere at all.  He still even has a partially broken bit hanging on.  :(  I hope this doesn't...

    Lost Tail Overnight

My tanks are next to each other.  I don't know if it is relevant, but a few weeks back (maybe I month, I forget now) my female honey gourami died.  They used to stare at each other through the glass.  I now have a new female and they don't look at each other.  I don't know, could that mean...

    Lost Tail Overnight

Water quality is perfect.  Been checking it daily because someone said the substrate I just added causes ammonia leakage... so far, that doesn't seem to be the case though.   I've not done a stocking test but the things in the tank are amazon swords, moss balls, anubias nanas, a rock arch (all...

    Lost Tail Overnight

Uh oh.  I hope that is not so.   I couldn't manage the stocking over the filter, but I did have craft mesh and managed to sew it in place using yarn.  I hope that is the problem.   What things tend to spark tail biting if that is it?

I think (long since lost the box) it is the Interpet P3. I will give that a try.

    Lost Tail Overnight

Looked in on Firefly this morning and he looked like this.  Just spent the last 2 months (ish) growing in his tail that was eaten up at the pet shop by tetras (his original pre-grown tail in my avatar).   I don't know what happened.  With my previous betta it did get its tail stuck and I fixed...

    Prairiesunflower's Betta: Firefly (Bought June 13, 2014)

Well.... this happened overnight.  :(   Firefly isn't a tail biter so all I can figure is that it got caught somewhere... I assume on the filter but I can't figure out where.  Ages ago my previous betta got his tail stuck and a small rip but I cut sponge and fit it in the offending space and it...

    Question About Bogwood

I've had this piece a year or just slightly over a year.  The weird thing is it doesn't feel like it is breaking down... it is very solid.

    Question About Bogwood

No, just the small fish, snails and amanos.

Best Time To Buy Fish From The Fish Shop - Feel Free To Disagree

I go first thing in the morning too.  I want to see how many fish might have died in the same tank before deciding to buy.  I also like to know if they have a quarantine period and so on (if they don't I don't buy ever, Pets At Home told me they put fish for sale straight away, for example).
  16. PrairieSunflower

    Question About Bogwood

No, the food seems to get eaten up by the fish and the rest grabbed by shrimp and last bits by snails.  My food is a lighter color and this debris is a very dark brown.

    Question About Bogwood

I have two honey gourami, 11 norman's lampeyes, some amanos (8 I think), and assassin snails.     My nerrite snail is in a different tank, so not the guilty culprit. It isn't a piece.... it is many many many bits and doesn't look the same as fish waste.  Maybe I need to take a picture of my...

    Question About Bogwood

How do you know when your bogwood is breaking down?   I get soooo much of these brown bits when I vacuum my gravel.  I do not have enough fish to be making this amount of debris in just one week and am certainly not over feeding them to this level.  So I've been wondering if this is somehow my...

What Is This Color Of Guppy Officially Called?

Google Xray guppies... maybe like those?

    How Do I Clean This?

I will be sure to monitor it then.  I already have a fish in that tank. (a betta)

    How Do I Clean This?

Oh!  That's a relief.  I was imagining a nightmare of stuff building up and polluting my water eventually.   Another question, does this substrate dissolve with time?  The package said I would need to replace it in about a year.

    How Do I Clean This?

Well, I've been wanting to change my substrate to something better and I chose Colombo Flora Base http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/colombo-florabase-black-5-litres-p-3914.html   Right... so... I didn't think something through... it says not to agitate it as it goes cloudy (which I can say already...

What Is This Color Of Guppy Officially Called?

It looks to me like a guppy who isn't fully grown yet and not fully developed its color.

    Sandy Bettas?

That sounds like the most likely scenario.  If it looked like grains of salt and didn't disappear I'd worry it was ich.

What Was The Fish That First Got You Into Fish Keeping?

Goldfish... and of course that went badly.... eventually guppies and that sparked the real fish keeping.   I dream of having a pond one day.

    Feeding Issue

I guess I might have to make a corner I can slide in and trap him sometimes.

    Bettas Tail Shortening?

You can also do things to break the current the filter creates so he won't be struggling to swim.
  28. PrairieSunflower

    Feeding Issue

Ah shrimp pellets!  I forgot entirely that those exist.  Those would likely work out entirely better, I could drop them into the snail house and if the shrimp carry them away my betta would probably not notice, especially with the new substrate I will be adding in a few days.

    Feeding Issue

Right... so my first attempt to feed wafers to my amano shrimp didn't go well and my betta engorged himself yesterday and sat around being miserable.  He is back to looking like his normal self today and is swimming as usual... but I have decided he is fasting today to be safe.   Question 1) ...

Want A Schooling Fish For A 20 Gal Long With Cherry Shrimp

I love my little norman's lampeyes, they aren't very colorful but I find them little and cute.  They like a pH of 6-8.

    Honey Gourami Question

Well there you go! I should always post what seems to be wrong here... my fish like to suddenly prove me wrong!  Today, after a couple weeks of my fish living separate lives.... Bumblebee is sporting a dark black belly and Daisy is following him around!  Yay!  LOL

    Fertilizer Recommendation Please (Uk)

Yes, that's the one.  I think I was buying a 200ml bottle (somewhere around that size anyway), it just always seemed to go so quickly.  I liked the idea of Seachem flourish because the dosage was smaller so the bottle would last longer... but it doesn't seem to do the same job.     EI dosing...

    Fertilizer Recommendation Please (Uk)

I used to use a fertilizer by JBL that was ok but the problem was it came in small bottles and needed so much that I was always going out and buying it... so I wanted to switch.  I bought Seachem Flourish and since... well, my plants are suffering.   Can you recommend a good fertilizer...

    Honey Gourami Question

I do think of my fish as mentally a bit more simple than myself.   My tank is big enough for more.  I have previously (in the beginning) had a trio and that didn't work out at all... my extra female ended up getting harassed to death... they seem to get along better in pairs for me.

    Prairiesunflower's Betta: Firefly (Bought June 13, 2014)

Time for a little update and new photo.   The mysterious white raised spot Firefly had on his fin went away, so no idea what that was.   I figure he must have grown back all his fins now so here is a new photo.

    Honey Gourami Question

I've had honey gourami for awhile now.  I've settled on only having two at a time.   The pair I had the longest was Bumblebee (male) and Amelia (female).  Well a few weeks back Amelia died.  I went away on holiday after that for a week and then bought Daisy (female).  Now... Bumblebee and Amelia...

    No Bubbles Nests

Oh, I thought they all made them when they were mature.  Mine was small (not marked as a baby though) when I bought him (I'd say he still isn't as big as the betta I had before though).  I've been waiting for the flaring (which I know he can do as he flared at my finger in the shop and I bought...
