    Betta sick again.

Yikes I’m not sure what to do at this point. If the meds helped the bump and swelling to go away that makes it seem like it’s being successfully treated but then getting reinfected. Are you putting him back in the main tank after the treatment and then the symptoms reappear? I know you said none...

    I have an odd one.

Yeah cories like more space than that. I wouldn’t try putting them in anything less than a 10 gallon. Some people say 20.

Have his symptoms resolved after you treated him before with the medication? Or they never went away completely at all?

Panda Cory Loss / New Plants

Sorry to hear about your fish loss. I’ve definitely had algae introduced to my tank via live plants before. It seems possible that microorganisms could be introduced that way as well. I do a bleach dip on all live plants before adding them to my tank. Make sure to use plain bleach without any...

    I have an odd one.

Yes that is unexpected. I've had some problems with bettas chasing cories around a bit before but never the other way around. Perhaps the poor cory is so lonely he's desperate for companionship. It should definitely help to add more cories (of the same species). How many to add would depend on...

    Gourami skin infection

I had a couple of dwarf gouramis (on 2 separate occasions) that both developed similar lesions before ultimately passing away. Upon research I discovered that it was dwarf gourami iridovirus, which is very common in recent years and unfortunately is not treatable. I don't know if it can affect...

    Coronavirus...post your thoughts here...

The vaccine doesn’t prevent covid in 100% of the people who receive it. But studies have showed the numbers to be pretty good (about 95% will not get symptomatic covid after receiving the vaccine for Pfizer and Moderna). However there will be those 5% that the vaccine simply doesn’t work for...

    Skunk corydoras?

When deciding on the tank keep in mind that the amount of space available on the floor of the tank is most important for cories. So a 20 long tank would be more suitable than a 20 high tank, for example. So out of the ones you mention the 25 gallon (regular) or 29 gallon would be best.

Is my tank just "dirty", and why?

All filter cartridges seem to be useless to me. I don’t think they’re designed with biological filtration in mind. More as a mechanical filtration I think. They wear out quickly. I think they’re more of a money maker for the company because you have to keep replacing them. And I always had to...

    White dots on mollies

It could possibly be a costia infection. It would have been introduced at some point via fish or plants. Or it could be fungal, but that would be more likely if your tank maintenance hasn’t been so good. Seachem Paraguard would be a good option to try because it treats both and doesn’t harm...

can you refreeze frozen fish food

I would usually advise against refreezing food that has thawed but in extreme circumstances....What temperature was the food when it arrived? Still cold like refrigerator temperature or more like room temperature? If it was still cold I would say you could use it until more food arrives. I would...

My new Salt & Pepper Corys arrived!

Low lighting, sand substrate, hiding places, lots of plants, clean substrate (vacuuming gravel w/ water changes), lots of same species cory buddies, frozen food (brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, bloodworms) as a supplement to high quality sinking pellet (like Hikari). On a recent thread someone...

My new Salt & Pepper Corys arrived!

Congratulations! Not to cause alarm or anything but the little white spots on the heads isn't ich is it? I have peppered cories but haven't seen any that have white spots like that on the head before. Or maybe they were just digging in the sand? I love my peppered cories. Different species of...

Could it be that whatever is causing the infection is in the main tank so he just gets reinfected when you put him back in there from the treatment tank?

Movies You Shouldn't Watch Before Bed

I've noticed that as people get older many seem to get "set in their ways" in that they become less open to reconsidering their opinions and beliefs even when they are presented with solid information that indicates otherwise. This is definitely frustrating if you are the person trying to get...

    What plant is this?

They spread by runners though so it’s quite easy to just snap off the runners when you see them if you don’t want them to spread. I’ve had them in medium lighting without fertilizer and had no issue with them growing excessively but maybe different with higher lighting and/or with fertilizer.

Movies You Shouldn't Watch Before Bed

The Grudge creeped me out for a while. I don’t care one way or the other about Sarah Michelle Gellar but it would be a scary movie to me whether or not she’s in it. Also, The Exorcism of Emily Rose The Conjuring The Rite The Quiet Ones

    Best food for corys?

I alternate between Hikari sinking wafers (orange bag), Hikari carnivore sinking wafers (purplish red bag), and frozen food (bloodworms/brine shrimp/mysis shrimp). Can’t really answer the question about it having a lot of “meals” in it. I know that Hikari is considered a quality product by a...

Help me with ammonia and nitrites

Sounds like the way a typical cycle goes. Ammonia builds then starts getting lower and disappears completely once bacteria #1 get established. Meanwhile, Nitrite starts building until bacteria #2 get established and then starts getting lower and disappears. Nitrate has to be there for cycle to...

    Sterbai with other corydoras?

For what it's worth I've had a single sterbai cory (not sure if male or female) in with my shoal of peppered cories for a couple of years and while the peppered cories spawn regularly the sterbai has never showed any interest in their shenanigans. I was finally able to get a couple more sterbais...

Help me with ammonia and nitrites

Very thorough post. The only thing I would add is that some of the newer ammonia/nitrite detoxifiers claim to keep the nutrients available to the beneficial bacteria even while rendering them nontoxic (Seachem Prime is one of them). I haven’t seen any detrimental effect on the filter when I’ve...

    More Fish Loss Today Help

Another tip would be not to rinse the filters so often. Any time they are rinsed there is the chance of disturbing your media and really you shouldn't have to rinse them very often. Once every month or two should be fine, assuming you have an intake that prevents large debris from being sucked...

    Problem adding new fish

I’ve always heard that changing the nitrate level of a tank by more than 50 ppm within a 24 hour period can shock the fish and cause additional stress so you should decrease it more gradually if the nitrate is super high (it isn’t in this case). Is it your experience that this is a myth? Even if...

    Problem adding new fish

Hard to say for sure if high nitrates is the cause of the fish deaths. 50 is definitely not ideal but it’s not panic high either. Some species of fish are more sensitive to nitrate than others. Either way the remaining fish would be happier if you keep it lower, 20 or less is a good goal. The...

    Problem adding new fish

Hi, How’s your tank maintenance? Are you performing partial water changes and how often/how much? Do you add a water conditioner first before adding new water to the tank? It would be good to get a nitrate reading in addition to ammonia and nitrite as nitrate can build up over time and cause...

    Need Advice please on Corydoras

I’ve heard of the Liquifry but haven’t used it before myself. Just to be clear, it is baby brine shrimp you would use. Regular size brine shrimp would be too big for them to eat.

    Need Advice please on Corydoras

Depending on when they hatched you might have some time to go to your local fish store or order from Amazon. Cory fry don’t eat for the first 2 or 3 days while they’re still absorbing their yolk sac. I’ve successfully raised fry alternating Hikari’s First Bites and frozen baby brine shrimp. In...

    Cory not healing?

I would try an immune supplement like Voogle. It’s just vitamins but really gives my fish an extra boost without having to resort to anything harsh. I actually add it to my tank weekly with water changes but it can also be dosed more intensely for acute problems. Not sure where you’re located...

    Problems?

I do love gouramis though. Some of them have quite developed personalities like bettas often do. I’m hoping that the Iridovirus stops being such a problem in the future. Another caution: my gourami would pick on my cories sometimes but not sure that would be a problem in a 55 gallon tank.
