    Geophagus growth rate

Good news! So the tank is a 5ft 405 litre so I believe 107 US gallons. These are the fish I am now open to. Angelfish Electric Blue Acara Geophagus Congo Tetra Denison Barbs As said the tank will be heavily planted, but all stem plants at the bank of the tank behind a wall of hardscape, so...

Failing this…any recommendations for medium sized fish for a 105 gallon planted tank. Tank will be majority of anubias and Java fern, but a wall of Valliseneria behind a wall of rocks at the back of the tank. -Discus are a no because I want denison barbs. -Angels I’ve kept a lot of in the past...

    Geophagus growth rate

Hi Colin, that sounds promising, reading so much conflicting information! Some saying they will still only be a few inches even after a year or two 😒

    Geophagus growth rate

Looking at Geophagus Sveni, but reading they can take years to start putting on some size. My store can only source them at 5cm. Is there any other type of Geophagus that is likely to grow a bit faster?

Ahhh that explains a lot haha. I’ve moved to Australia recently! Will get that changed 😅

    Filter for 150 gallon.

I don’t mind weekly water changes, but I’ve always had heavily planted tanks, and intend this one to have serious amounts of plants which usually helps maintain nitrates. I’m in Australia so not sure if anyone knows of any good external filter brands besides the fx6

    Filter for 150 gallon.

So looking to get a custom built 5ftx2x2 tank. I thought this was 125 gallons, but seems to be more like 150. Can I get away with a single fx6. Tank will be heavily planted with around 6 Geophagus Sveni, and a shoal of Denison barbs?

    Geophagus and sand sifting

The tank is not yet commissioned, it will be custom built and in the process of moving house at the moment. It will depend what the space of the house allows, but leaning toward a 6x2x2. A favourite fish I’ve kept has been the cardinal tetra, but I’m assuming this wouldn’t work with such a big...

    Geophagus and sand sifting

Hi Wills, Great information thanks! They both look gorgeous to me, I read the Svenis are a little bit smaller so maybe a better option. I will see what the suppliers can source. Stocking wise I was thinking Congo tetras, denison barbs and maybe some Columbian tetras? What do you think?

    Geophagus and sand sifting

Thanks for the helpful answers guys. There seems to be 3 popular Geophagus. The Tapajos, the Sveni and the Altifron. What exactly are the main differences between these? Such as size, aggression, ideal group sizes, community compatible etc.

    Geophagus and sand sifting

It was just a question... I’ve read that some Geophagus are more prolific than others when it comes to sand sifting 24/7. If that’s not the case then I will reconsider. This page is to help others learn, not give out sarcastic garbage. Thanks for a useless comment 🤙

    Geophagus and sand sifting

Hi guys, Looking to stock a 125 gallon, it’s going to be planted but mainly anubias and Java fern etc. Hopefully the geos won’t bother these too much. I would like some vallisneria and am wandering which type of Geophagus is less likely to be digging and sand sifting so much. Not only do I not...

    Geophagus without sand

BluePlanet is not a shop, it is a nationwide, massive aquarium in the UK that houses and educates on a number of fish from tetras to sharks, hence why I thought there would be some method behind the substrate? https://www.blueplanetaquarium.com/

    Geophagus without sand

So I’ve always wanted to keep Geophagus having kept an array of cichlids before. But I am 100% against sand, I’ve tried it before and hate it. I know Geophagus are supposed to be kept with sand to sift for food, but after a trip to BluePlanet the other day, I saw a beautiful tank with angels...

    Peacock cichlid head marks

Got some peacocks today from a reputable breeder. They seem really healthy, colourful and active, but I’ve noticed a couple of the males have these sort of grey patches on their forehead. It is the bigger males and they are eating and behaving normally? Is this a problem like hith or simply...

    Oscar fish 55 gallon

So I’m moving away next year and have listed all my aquarium bits for sale. I managed to sell my whole discus community as well as all plants for a good price, but have been really struggling to get rid of the tank. I decided to take on an Oscar as I’ve always had plants so it’s never been...

    Never cleaned canister filter

So I’m not sure how controversial this is, but I’ve had my canister filter over a year. I cleaned it once about 8 months ago using tank water, rinsing out and squeezing the sponges which were very black. Since then; I have never touched the filter, and I don’t see a reason to. The flow is just...

    Discus eggs

So my discus pair have laid eggs for the second time. The first time, they ate them almost immediately, but it is the second night now and they are guarding them closely. There is only one white egg, and I am predicting wigglers by tomorrow. The tank has cardinal tetras and rummy nose. Honestly...

    Discus and Betta fish?

So I have a 200 litre with discus, rummy nose and neons. I was curious whether or not my Betta could be put into the 200litre, mainly because it would be less maintenance looking after 2 seperate tanks. My initial thought was absolutely not, but I decided to give it a google and came across lots...
