    Aquascape tips and tricks?

I've seen some youtube videos of people putting lava rock (in aquarium safe bags) under the substrate to create a hill and such. you could always use multiple bags to put in your desired location and make it look like you want. I'm assuming with the aquasoil you will be planting this tank...

    I got new fish! Questions

I will check the tank in the morning. The lights are off right now. And for all I know this may have happened within the last 3 nights. I wasn't counting constantly cuz I got busy. As for the one not doing so well, it's better. I may have stressed it out when I did pull a couple ornaments out...

    I got new fish! Questions

@Colin_T Well, after I called live aquaria to get a refund on the glowlights I lost yesterday and then hung up when done...I look over and have a harlequin that was floating. Geeze..... Now....I ordered 15 and had 2 doa's. Which left 13 in the tank. So with that one I just pulled out I should...

    I got new fish! Questions

I think this is the only one unfortunately...this area isn't high on tropical fish. Other than petsmart. And this lady is the owner. Maybe just one person possibly working for her. But mostly just her. I mean she did say once she may be able to order fish in for me but yeah. She does have good...

    I got new fish! Questions

Thanks! They did seem to eat better this morning which is good. No deaths since yesterday evening either. Got the water change done and they seemed to enjoy it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Ps....even if you didn't like the person running the lfs....and they've given bad advise but have...

    I got new fish! Questions

No fish in the tank. Couldn't really say any thing about snails but I've never seen any. I do see other types of water bugs at times. But mostly horse drool and grass/leaves. As for the water.....it's well water. No chlorine.

    I got new fish! Questions

Thanks for the help Colin. I'll see what they do with the regular food but I can always scoop some mosquito larvae from my horse tank. You said to just rinse them off before feeding, right? And that will be safe and no parasites or anything?

    I got new fish! Questions

I think you are right about the bad batch. I've never had this problem with glowlights before at all and those were from petsmart. I had thought about ordering some from that lfs later that I book the barb too....but that lady just well, rubs me the wrong way. She's got a lot of experience...

    I got new fish! Questions

@Colin_T Well, I just lost another one. Saw it being blown around by what little current my sponge filter makes. Didn't take it long to die. Swam nose up for a little bit. The first couple I noticed did that too. This sucks....out of 40 I think I have just over 20 left... (mostly deaths but I...

    I got new fish! Questions

Ok. I'll just continue to keep an eye on them. Hopefully it was just the barb stressing them out.

    I got new fish! Questions

I don't think they look as faded as they do in the pictures. That may have been the light doing that. They are behaving a lot better now. Displaying to each other and such which is good. As for the fins, only a few have a slight cloudiness but it's right on the damaged area. So maybe more...

    I got new fish! Questions

@Colin_T Pictures and a video. I think the video shows them better. I will say there is rapid brea thing going on with some of them. But now that the barb is gone, they do seem quite a bit more active. They do seem a little pale but some of that could be from their smaller size on some. Oh...

    I got new fish! Questions

I will post pics hopefully around an hour from now. Just did big water change and they have some air bubbles on them still. Lol. Not ick. Haven't seen any flashing. They did eat a little. And seem to be out more right now since the barb is caught...interesting....will post pics soon as I'm back...

    I got new fish! Questions

I have seen the cherry barb really going after them. But I have seen them going after each other too. I figured the barb may just be doing it since it's the only one. I will try to get pictures after a while of the glowlights. I did get the barb caught already and the one lfs said she would take...

    I got new fish! Questions

Just an update. Looks like I will be taking that barb out sooner rather than later. I'm seeing too many fins that look nipped. I think it may be stressing the glowlights out too much, enough that I'm still getting deaths. (Not saying that's the complete cause but just part. My water quality is...

    I got new fish! Questions

The basis is that the fish use the oxygen in the bag which lowers the pH which means the waste the produce isn't as toxic. But as soon as you open the bag and let in oxygen, the pH goes back up and the waste gets toxic. So getting them into clean water fast is essential for their health.

    I got new fish! Questions

Plop and drop is acclimatng to temperature only. Then opening the bag and quickly pouring them into a net so the bag water doesn't contaminate anything and then putting the fish directly in the tank.

    I got new fish! Questions

I wanna say it was about half water half air. 4 bags. Harlequins came in one. Cories another. And the glowlights in two seperate bags. I'm think they may have got a little cold to be honest as they put a cold pack (felt cold) in with them. They were in a styro foam line box though and it was 24...

    Driftwood not sinking

Too big for me to boil unfortunately. And right now I don't feel like breeding mosquitos. Though I do have more fish that would love them...lol. if anything I could get them from my horse tank. Lots in there.

    Driftwood not sinking

I'm not sure it was the rocks. I don't know what was up with the water. Anyway, as for those driftwood pieces...I took them out as they still wouldn't sink. Took the rocks off and they floated and then I couldn't get them back in right. Got fed up and ordered some manzanita instead! Lol. And I...

    I got new fish! Questions

I will keep checking the water quality and do changes as needed for sure. I got more test tubes and I also have the strips so can test quick too. I got new fish! Questions

Quick update. Live aquaria has issued me a refund for the losses. But they didn't say anything about the barb. IF I keep it through its quarantine, should I put it in its own place? I have a small tote that can hold five gallons and a spare heater and sponge filter to use. Would that be better...

    I got new fish! Questions

Thanks Colin! I did send them an email. I took pictures(and the video) but haven't sent them in yet as I didn't know their process. I may have one place to take the cherry barb. I didn't plan in having these so yeah. Lol. Should I let it go through at least a couple weeks of quarantine first...

    I got new fish! Questions

Well, I ordered 65 fish from live aquaria. I had 5 doa's. I suppose that's not too bad. Out of 40 glowlight tetras, 3 were dead. Out of 15 harlequin rasboras, 2 were dead. All 10 peppered cories are alive and well. I set up 2 ten gallon tanks for quarantine. The glowlights went in one and the...

    Heater question this time...lol

Thanks again Byron. For some reason I was thinking 3 spots wanted a bit higher temp. Don't know why. I did look it up and found I was wrong. I want to set this at the best temp possible. As Byron explained, they all have a preferred range with the mid temps being best. If it changes a bit...

    Heater question this time...lol

So far these seem to be pretty accurate. I cam always test with a regular one just to be sure but I did that when I first got them. Thanks though. Ok, I'll move the probes and see where it's at! Do you think 77 is a good temp to aim for with the fish I want in it? Or is 76 better?
  30. cowgirluntamed

    Heater question this time...lol

I will probably stick with 77 I think. And I'm not worried about the tank not being insulated is what I meant. Lol. My tanks stay pretty steady for the most part.

    Heater question this time...lol

Isn't 75 too low for the gourami though? (I don't mind 75 temp if he's too mean to stay in there. Lol.) I don't mind the 2 thermometers. I wanted to make sure both sides were good to go. Idont expect them to be completely accurate at times and i wasnt worried anout the half degree. I know in...

    Heater question this time...lol

Awesome! I will get this one set where I want it and then do the same to the other one! This is exactly what I have done! I had just done a water change so the temp was 76. I'm aiming for 77-78. Question...since I have my thermometer probes at the bottom, do I need to maybe have them at a...

    Heater question this time...lol

So, again with my 55 gallon. I got my filters set up and going. Not sure exactly like I want but close enough...lol. Anyway, I have two 200 watt aqueon pro heaters. As advised...I turned one in to let it get the tank where it should be. (Mostly there now...). Anyway, I haven't touched the...

    Air pump question...

Is the lead that weighs them down actually safe though? Saw a video where someone took the bottom off and put the weight in water and it started to rust in one week. And how many of these can you actually stick together? Can they lay flat?
  36. cowgirluntamed

    Air pump question...

That would probably be better than the bar I got from walmart....lol. but I do want more of a bar that can sit on the sand or close to it. I will look into it Nick, thanks!

    Driftwood not sinking

Thanks again. I'll go ahead and do a regular water change later and keep an eye on things. If they don't like it I will do less next time, or keep testing water to see how much to do. I may update in a couple of weeks with more tests but I think I'm done for the moment...lol. thanks for all the...

    Air pump question...

Thanks for the tips! There is also this one, but I can't find the psi on it. Which would you choose out of the two? (Gonna go for the larger, two outlet version since it could probably handle the tank better. It's 20.5 inches but that is from the bottom of the bottom rim to the top of the top...
