You're doing your best. A trash fishkeeper wouldn't even bother trying to learn how to care better for their fish or would just dismiss any advice they didn't want to hear. It might take some time but you'll get it figured out.

Never trust fish store employees.

They're different. Genetically modifying fish might be ethically debatable. But sticking a needle into them to inject dyes that cause long term health problems is downright inhumane.
