    Fairy Shrimp

That's true. And I should have clarified that I was thinking more along the lines of hatching and growing them out. Not having to worry about making brine. But I think the issue is more temperature than anything. Fairy shrimps need cooler water to hatch in than brine shrimp. Generally...

And for salt, you don't have to buy "aquarium salt". Supermarket salt will do just fine and costs much less. It's all NaCl. Just make sure that's all it is. Don't use any iodized salt or anything with anti-caking additives. I like Morton's canning salt. It's additive free and ground fine...

    Fairy Shrimp

Question about fairy shrimp. From what I understand, these are basically a freshwater version of brine shrimp. So why don't we see them more in the hobby? Seems like the would be better suited for our freshwater tanks.

    Duckweed soup for Bamboo shrimp

They've actually looked at cultivating duckweed for human consumption. Which isn't a half bad idea since it grows so quickly and easily. I wouldn't know but reportedly it tastes like cabbage.

Where do you get your wood and rocks?

One of the local fish stores sells river rock for $2.50 a pound. I went to a local home and garden store and asked how much it was for river rock. Guy said "50 cents a ton". I was like "...whut?". He ended up charging me more for the bag he gave me for them than the rocks I got.

    Possible tank mate ,,,

A lot of times schooling fish will school with other species out of what they think is necessity. They aren't making friends with the other fish. They're using them as a substitute for conspecifics. They really should be with more of their own species. But the reward for you as their keeper...

Play-Sand As Substrate, Safe Or Not?

Some brands say that they aren't aquarium safe. If you're in the US, you want to use Quikrete. In the UK, you want Argos. Otherwise, play sand is pretty ideal. It's soft so it's good for bottom dwellers like corys or fish that like to dig like cichlids. It looks natural. Add some root...

How to skip a water change?

I found out the hard way that sometimes the reduced flow isn't because the media is getting clogged. Sometimes it's because the intake tubes get clogged up.

How to skip a water change?

Anacharis is a soft leaf plant that's edible for the fish and grows fast. That could be another option for something that they could peck at while you're away. Although the others are correct in that fish don't need to eat nearly as often as we think they do. If you could get someone to feed...

How Do You Introduce Fish to your Tank?

For corydoras, since they have issues with self poisoning, my goal is to get them out of the bag ASAP. I pour the bag into a plastic collander and right into the tank they go.

    anyone mix their floaters???

I have salvinia minima and anacharis going on the same tank. Along with some water wisteria.. The salvinia and anacharis coexist pretty well. Especially since the salvinia sits on the surface abs the anacharis sits just below it. I used to have more water wisteria. But when I added the...

is there much nutritional difference or palatability between Frozen Brine & Frozen Mysis shrimp???

That's actually going for a lot of fish foods in general. Supply chain shortages and inflation forced many companies to change up their formulas and it was rarely for the better. If you have a food that you trusted, it's not a bad idea to reassess it to see if it still meets your expectations.

    Water changes and fertilizer

Update. The salt treatment was somewhat helpful. It did a number on my salvinia minima though. It didn't clear them completely up but obviously I couldn't use it forever. I finished reacclimating the fish to completely fresh water a short time ago. Just today I noticed that one of the...

    Shrimp, Snails, Catfish…

Plus like any other creature, they have their own needs and sometimes drawbacks. Hillstream loaches eat algae, but they need high flow highly oxygenated water and cooler temperatures. Siamese algae eaters (obviously) but they need to be in a shoal. Same with otos. I wonder how many people...

    Shrimp, Snails, Catfish…

The OP is like asking what kind of bucket is the best at fixing a leaky roof. Algae is the result of an imbalance where there is excess light and nutrients. Don't overstock your aquarium and don't overfeed to prevent excess nutrients. Cut back on the duration and/or intensity of lighting...

Question Regarding Culturing Food For Fry (guppy specifically)

Do snails need to be quarantined?

I kind of wanted to have *some* snails. But I guess since I've cut back on overfeeding they didn't reproduce fast enough. I'm taking that as a good sign. I don't count on my livestock as a "clean up crew". I mostly wanted them to dig around in the substrate. But the assassins do that too...

29.5 Gallon fish tank - Amazonian inspired

The otos, neons, emporers and glowlights are all better off in schools of 10-12. The neons especially look much better in a larger group. I'd pick two of those and stock a larger group of each. And buyer beware with dwarf gourami. A lot of them have iridovirus. It's deadly and incurable.

    Shrimp Diet?

Glass surfing or normal cory behavior?

You're doing your best. A trash fishkeeper wouldn't even bother trying to learn how to care better for their fish or would just dismiss any advice they didn't want to hear. It might take some time but you'll get it figured out.

They're different. Genetically modifying fish might be ethically debatable. But sticking a needle into them to inject dyes that cause long term health problems is downright inhumane.

Suggestions for food to feed my swordtail fishes

Fluval Bug Bites are an excellent food. Have you tried frozen foods? If you don't have an LFS, you can get them at any big box pet store. Your fish would probably love brine shrimp or bloodworms. If you want to take it a step further, you could also try live foods. There are some very...
