    Those poor Bettas

And if whoever gets that second one doesn't name her Betta White, they really dropped the ball.

    Those poor Bettas

I was just at a Petco. They had some female bettas in a community tank. I fell in love. I don't have a place for another betta and I don't want to buy bettas from a big box store so I didn't buy her. But still though. They looked so much healthier and better than the ones in cups. I...

What kind of Cory is this?

    I believe that's Corydoras McElroy.

What kind of Cory is this?

    Looks like a corydoras habrosus.

    Those poor Bettas

When people rescue bettas, their heart really is in the right place. But unfortunately, it's counter productive. A big box store does not care if the fish is purchased begrudgingly or not. It's the same profit for them. Which is essentially rewarding them for mistreating these poor fish...

    Wingless Fruit Flies

Just so happens I got off the phone with my local Petco. And they just got a shipment of melanogaster in. I'll swing by tomorrow and take a chance. But now I know to check them before buying.

Change of filter media to all foam has affected nitrates unexpectedly !!!

You have to shake that bottle good and hard 2 for at least 2 minutes. Shake it like it owes you money. And then after adding the drops from bottle 2, you have to shake the test tube for a minute.

    New Panda Cory Flashing

Stress is probably an issue here. Pandas are schooling fish. They should be in a group of at least six conspecifics. More is better.

    Betta keepers, your opinion please.

I think I'm going to skip the Saturday fasting day. Maybe give him bloodworms or something like that. I don't think of live foods as a treat. I think of them as enrichment. They provide nutrition and the fish is able to indulge his hunting instincts. Same with frozen to a lesser degree. I...

    Betta keepers, your opinion please.

This is my new betta. Just got him last weekend. My question to you is how would you rate his physique. I'm not sure but he looks a little thin to me. I'm aware that bettas are prone to obesity. So I want to be careful there. Right now his feeding schedule is this... Sunday - Fluval...

    Wingless Fruit Flies

On second thought, I'm going to either see if I can find someone who sells locally or wait until the temps are a little cooler (like low 70's) before I order.

    Wingless Fruit Flies

I'm taking the plunge. I just ordered deli cups, excelsior and fruit fly medium (I got the Repashy brand). I know my betta and honey gourami will like them. I hope I can get my neon tetras and upcoming harlequin rasboras to eat them too. Seems pretty easy and straightforward to culture...

    Need Help Identifying Betta

Honestly, if someone is setting up a sorority, they should expect problems.

    New fishkeeper

The great thing about this hobby is that there are always great options. Hard water fish include most livebearers (guppies, platies, mollies, swordtails), African cichlids, and rainbowfish. One thing though. African cichlids are a great looking fish but they don't go well with plants.

What substrate should I use for goldfish?

Same thing here in America. We have the Quikrete Play Sand that's available at most hardware stores. It's much cheaper than pet store sand. It's designed for children to play in so it's not abrasive and non toxic. It's chemically inert. So it's perfect for aquarium use. The only thing is...

What substrate should I use for goldfish?

I don't know. Maybe. I just know for sure that Argos is aquarium safe.

    New betta tank

He gave me a scare yesterday. I fed him some grindal worms. Later on, I saw him face down in the moss carpeting. Turns out, he was fine. He was just rooting around for one of the worms that got away before.

What substrate should I use for goldfish?

You can use Argos play sand. It's perfect.

    fish & fats...

Sharks are a little different. They burn a lot of energy with movement so they need to eat foods that are high in oils like bony fish like tunas or high fat aquatic mammals like whales or seals. Humans actually don't have enough of either fats or oils to be a good meal for sharks.

    fish & fats...

The way I see it, warm blooded mammals aren't a part of most fishes' natural diet. I'm no scientist but mammal flesh seems pretty far removed from insects, crustaceans, and other aquatic creatures.

    What is a tropical aquarium?

Yeah but this should be science based. Instead we get people ignoring the biological needs of a fish because of their own wants. "I'm going to keep hard water and soft water fish together because that's what I want to do and I'll rationalize it after the fact." Or people who don't do water...

    What is a tropical aquarium?

People in this hobby can have a tendency to engage in confirmation bias. They only want to believe what's convenient for them.

I need some advice on assassin snails

Pest snails will populate up to the level of their food supply. Overfeeding is the big one. Also ambient algae and dead plant matter. So reigning in overfeeding, controlling algae and pruning dead plants go a long way to controlling pest snails. Here's the dirty little secret of assassin...

    What is a tropical aquarium?

I have a rule that I strictly follow in fish keeping. Never buy an animal on impulse. I spend weeks if not months researching the fish. I want to know its water parameters, school or shoal size and tank size, just for starters. Then I need to know if it's compatible with the other fish I...

    What is a tropical aquarium?

I never got this idea that a few generations of selective breeding will overcome millions of years of evolution either.

    New betta tank

He's coloring up well and exploring his new space. Since today is his second day, I tested the water. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 5 Nitrate. And since that went well, I gave him his first feeding. One small flake, two Bug Bites pellets and a couple of mosquito larvae. Next feeding will be...

    Black gravel n Corys

Beware. Gravel has to be extremely clean and smooth for corys. Otherwise it can cause bacterial issues that erode their barbells. A soft, smooth sand is really best for them. They feed by sifting through sand. I don't think they're really happy without it. Even if you can't have all of the...

    New betta tank

And this is who I brought home. I'll post more pics later. Since this is his first day, I'm going to keep the lights turned down low. I named him Indy after yesterday's glorious holiday and because he has red, white and blue on him. There's some ramshorn snails in the tank. I don't...

    New betta tank

Just got back from the fish store. First of all, shout out to Elmer's Aquarium in Monroeville, PA near Pittsburgh. This is their betta display. I love it. None of those tiny cups. I specifically chose to purchase from them because of their humane betta display.

    Mosquito larvae

I check every few days. I usually get a nice little batch. I'm thinking of putting out another bin of water so I can have extras that I can freeze. I also realized that I've created a nice supply of green water for when I start culturing daphnia.
