    Pirate Perch

Anyone into oddball North American natives like the Pirate Perch? I am about to rap up the breeding side and getting ready to put all effort into rearing fry. Shortly I will be breeding a pair of Black Crappie in the tank currently housing the Pirate Perch broodfish. Image below is of an embryo...

    Red-tailed Sharks Housed in Groups

New phone so better pictures. Sort of. Snail abundance became abundant when lights turned. Bad as they consumed a lot of aufwuchs fish need. Red-tailed Sharks are growing fast. Lost on to cichlids. Others looking real good.

    I am getting baby chickens!

I am on four sites including this and BYC. Trying to find an active fish forum. Will be using them a lot this summer as likely to be penned in at home. My job actually more with fish but I can no longer engage farmers face to face which kills typical extension activities.

    I am getting baby chickens!

Not all make a lot of noise while laying. Mine as general rule are very quite as they try to hide location of nest site. Exception is when they are trying attract attention of rooster. Clucking is a broody related sound. Many sounds reported as clucking have other meanings and done under...

It is possible they effectively scars where melanophores are overly active yet can be turned on and off, but not proportionally with surrounding tissues.

I would like to see a fin scrape from those locations or a much closer photograph. I have a microscope on my desk suitable, but it is on my desk.

    My fish is not growing

External parasite? Fish louse or leach? Or a trematode? What is history of fish. When I have had infected fish it took a lot more to slow growth.

    I am getting baby chickens!

I am placing two dozen eggs in incubator as soon as incubator stabilizes. Getting rid of about 1/2 dozen laying hens to pay for feed for next couple of month. I use a few of the tight little coops but they typically serve more as roosts.

    What’s suitable for a 45 gallon, anything?

I have kept Jewel Cichlids and Kribensis in such setups with extensive plantings. If water flow good then Buffaloheads are fun as well. I try to setup for pair formation and reproduction to make display more engaging. All three have really cool interactions between adults and fry. My current...

    Red-tailed Sharks Housed in Groups

Sharks appear able to switch back and forth between a shoal with pecking order to territorial. They have a suite of behaviors enabling the former social organization. The immature (black pectoral fins) fish are in shoal mode most often.

    Red-tailed Sharks Housed in Groups

Guppy fry in with pleco babies

Are the prolarval plecos larger than the guppy fry? In my experience guppy fry no not inclined to consume other fish that are likely to be attempted in a freshwater aquarium.

How big is huge? Largest I have seen to date has been a little over 5 inches. The color on those was washed out. Best breeding size I think will be well below that.

    Red-tailed Sharks Housed in Groups

Sharks starting to show strong iridescent green on back fins. Three largest are growing about 0.5 inches per month. Pretty fast for a minnow that eats mostly greens.

    Red-tailed Sharks Housed in Groups

The fish are exhibiting a behavioral pattern that repeats. Most of time they have little home ranges where similar sized fish do not overlap and there is a clear size correlated hierarchy. Then they all come together and do a bout of displays that last a minute or so before the group disperses...

Another color variation that may be related to sexual maturation. All fish at time of purchase had smokey gray pectoral fins. The largest fish pushing 3 inches now has reddish pectoral fins and second largest fish that is about 2.25 inches is also getting a reddish cast to pectoral fins.

    How to breed betta?

Does Barry have only one female? Barry, do you have access to lantern chimneys like linked below? If using those, then you can protect female until she ripens. You can use her behavior to as a way to assess willingness to mate. If she is not ready, then put the chimney back over her without...

    How to breed betta?

Conditioning Females: I like to stock several young adult females in a shallow heavily vegetated tank in a location where water temperature stays in the range of 80 to 84 degrees F. Fish are feed in excess with some sort of live food that is supplemented with frozen brine shrimp. Take to not...
