There will be some impact if you just add an inch on top, but it should be short lived. If I was doing the same thing, I would probably add half an inch to half of the tank (maybe in strips or regions) then 4 or 5 days later do 1/2 inch in the blank spots then repeat - - breaking it into 4 steps.

Not an unreasonable idea. Just use the decent grade like 304. You can probably buy rod as well and just cut into chunks. Personally though, I would just find some rocks to jam in the hole or pour in gravel and silicone plug.

I don't think they will get stuck. Mine will regularly jam themselves through dense dwarf hair grass and manage to push through every time. I've seen them turn completely sideways and go under and through some pretty dense foliage looking for critters

You can always weight the wood down. Either glue/silicone directly to rocks or tile/slate, or bore out hidden sections, fill with sand and plug with plumbers epoxy.
