20G Ecosystem dirted offshoot from 40G thread

Thanks. They were sold as 'red racer' nerites at flip Aquatics. I purchased 3 but got an extra. They aren't the cheapest, but definitely have some cool markings.

20G Ecosystem dirted offshoot from 40G thread

Some recent pics. Not much to report. Lots of shrimp. Same area but shrimp at dinner time. The only interesting thing is the Amanos love the Alternanthera reineckii 'Mini' so it's pretty much gone. I try and keep them extra fed with shrimp food an wafers, and that slowed it down a bit...

    Experience with shipped fish?

I will only use Flip Aquatics for online after having a couple of bad experiences elsewhere. They are always in exceptional condition. Shipping (overnight) is a bit high unless you spend $100, but I've lost more trying to save a few dollars. I'm sure there are others, but no need to look...

    Planted aquarium 🌱

I like the yellow rabbit snails. I see them in the Flip Aquatics email ads. I would pretty much put cherry shrimp in any tank they wouldn't get eaten in.

Yes! Good eye. It will only get more wonderful. Please drop a plant list and any planned critters when you can spare a moment.

20G Ecosystem dirted offshoot from 40G thread

Small tragedy a few days ago. I couldn't find the 2 female honey gouramis while sitting and watching at dinner and through process of elimination, discovered both in the HOB filter along with 2 otos and about 4 shrimp. The two honeys did not make it, and one oto was dead. The other oto and...

20G Ecosystem dirted offshoot from 40G thread

Thanks. It has been a challenge to work in the small space and still get the plants I want in there. I really like the hardscape, but want a bit more open area. It was always intended to be a 40G breeder project, so I had to be really careful with plant selection (and fish). Inevitably, the...

20G Ecosystem dirted offshoot from 40G thread

Just some pic updates. There is a little bit of BBA that I seem to be able to control with lighting, but the clado seems to be kept in check by the 4 amanos and an army of Red Cherry shrimp. They are breeding like crazy and even the little ones seem to be braving the open in spite of at least...

    90L Dirted Planted Tank

I love the neos. They weren't really a common thing back when I had tanks before. Mine pretty much take care of themselves so long as the honey gouramis don't pick off too many babies. I think if it weren't for the DHG, they would have a much harder time of it, but seem to reproduce pretty...

Adding more substrate - any risks?

There will be some impact if you just add an inch on top, but it should be short lived. If I was doing the same thing, I would probably add half an inch to half of the tank (maybe in strips or regions) then 4 or 5 days later do 1/2 inch in the blank spots then repeat - - breaking it into 4 steps.

Copepods in Shrimp Tank - Should I be concerned?

I had a ton of copepods in my 20g for the first month. They were pretty much free swimming everywhere. The honey gouramis and neons wiped them out entirely. I do have several isopods still, but my daughters guppy seems pretty keen on taking them out. I would leave them be unless you really...

    Refurbished 40ish gallon dirted tank/aquascape

I have no real experience with breeding, but you might get a few more bites if you post this also in the tropical discussion. This arena is already pretty quiet (plant nerds).

    Plants and nitrate

Floaters like frog bit, red root floaters or salvinia (and others) are pretty good at taking care of free nitrates. They are prolific, but that is the point with nitrogen removal. Just remove the extra and toss it as it gets too dense. You may want a two stage process though where you put the...

The Arch - My messy journey to a 180L planted paradise

Here's an idea. It looks like you got polycarbonate sheet which is a bit of a light scatterer. Consider getting some acrylic or glass (beveled/rounded edge), or lexan (the very clear corrugated roofing) rectangles that fit in the width (front to back) , but maybe take 5 or 6 to cover the whole...

20G Ecosystem dirted offshoot from 40G thread

Strategic coral for floaters: So I have had rings of 3/8" clear tubing I made for managing floaters, but I really wanted a specific shade pattern over certain areas of the tank. The trick with these is they need to be absolutely level. For the rings, I used a barbed connector, dropped them in...

Welcome! Just FYI, I have noticed this forum can be hit or miss on responses and it appears to be a combination of mobile platform interaction and just not realizing which are the best subforums to post. Anyway, enjoy the ride.

Where to buy non-lead plant weights?

Not an unreasonable idea. Just use the decent grade like 304. You can probably buy rod as well and just cut into chunks. Personally though, I would just find some rocks to jam in the hole or pour in gravel and silicone plug.

    Honey gourami 26 gallon pond

I don't think they will get stuck. Mine will regularly jam themselves through dense dwarf hair grass and manage to push through every time. I've seen them turn completely sideways and go under and through some pretty dense foliage looking for critters

While it may have more to do with the tankmates, you can still get some sand in there. I haven't seen your tank, but you can certainly create a sandy area if you have room. Bear in mind, the sand will filter down between the larger aggregate over time, so you may need to reapply, but there is no...

A new YT channel, focused on micro organisms

I think fishkeepers should pay more attention to this in general. I have a small population of freshwater isopods (Asellus sp.) in mine, and while they aren't "cute" they get places and do things that others don't. Also, there are a plethora of tinier critters that provide food, do things and...

    Honey gourami 26 gallon pond

I know this is an old thread, but in my experience, I have never seen a fish more capable of jamming itself through roots and stems. They may look big broadside, but those little honeys are very thin and almost belligerent about going where it seems they couldn't. I regularly see them turning...

    850l Discus set up

Holy moly! I had no idea they were such a high-dollar item. That's reef-tank level addiction there (I once saw a donut coral go for $1200). No judgement -- if you have all your ducks in a row then by all means enjoy.

    850l Discus set up

You can always weight the wood down. Either glue/silicone directly to rocks or tile/slate, or bore out hidden sections, fill with sand and plug with plumbers epoxy.

Thanks. Yeah, we just wandered around the shallow part of the creek for about 10 minutes looking for rocks. The "stairs" was just a fun lucky find, and when it came time to fit them all in we had to down-select from about 8 rocks to 3. They made the cut and seemed to naturally fit there...
