Noooo! It's CRUEL! Even if they don't die they struggle and suffer, often horribly.

I've just looked bladder snails up and realise that that is what has appeared in my tank since I got some new plants a fortnight ago. I've just been squashing the little buggers because I didn't want to be over-run (I assumed that it was a few eggs which had hatched because some of them are...

I don't know what a bladder snail is, and as a Brit, Mystery snails are just a photo on the internet . . .

I agree - I couldn't feed live fish to anything else. I know it's nature's way etc, but it isn't something I'm prepared to see happening. I know nothing about discus (except that they are very impressive) or reef tanks (ditto) so can' commence on the cost etc.

    7 Year old Tank

I hadn't realised this - I worry myself skinny trying to get the new, clean water as close to the old stuff as possible.

    7 Year old Tank

I'm surprised that a cold water change hasn't caused any problems - but the tank looks fab and if what you say is right, I'm impressed! How long is the light on each day? That's very lush plant growth.

Well said - it's heartbreaking the way so many of these poor fish are treated.

Maybe it's because you have a much larger shoal - perhaps they are just mean when their numbers are small?

I think they hoover up small fish when they get big. We had a common pleco many years ago which outgrew a 4 foot tank. Fish disappeared around him. I was pleased to see the back of him - we gave him away.

Like you I was really surprised to learn about the social hierarchy of neons - an "Alpha Neon" was something I hadn't anticipated. We have one in our tank, too, and currently our little shoal has ostracised on fish who spends his days alone and unloved among the carpet plants, bless him...

Absolutely agree with that. Even if they are fairly sedentary fish, it is cruel.

I don't know if your shamrock/clover has flowed yet, but it is a very attractive bloom when it does. Hoe did you attach your orchid to that stump? Did you buy it like that, or is it fastened on with fishing line or similar?

BIOFILM! Sudden occurrence- what to do?

I'll stick with the ramshorns - I've seen tanks that are wall-to-wall assassins and I don't like them! Red ramshorns are a very attractive snail.

Shop says no - nitrates too high

Your tank is certainly visually very attractive - you've done a lovely job. Try to be patient. You'll get there. Do you know anyone with an established tank who can give you some soiled filter material? It will kick start the cycle.

Shop says no - nitrates too high

10 days isn't very long TBH -we cycled ours for month. Test strips aren't very accurate - you'd be better with something like the API kit - expensive, but lasts for yonks. And be thankful that the fish seller (I was really tempted to say fish monger, there  ) is ethical and has refused...

Cheers, NC! I'll probably get a couple (am always worried I'll get overrun by snaillets, but needs must)

BIOFILM! Sudden occurrence- what to do?

Helo all. Have a 64l tropical tank - it housed 2 nerites, 6 neons and 2 glowlights (we had had more tetras, but the last three months saw a gradual dying off - I assume old age as nothing had changed and remaining fish are healthy). Real live plants and some rocks, gravel substrate. On...

    Pallandarium

That's really attractive; lovely phaleonopsis - I've never seen one that shade - and is that a shamrock in there? I should know the name of the plant with the heart-shaped leaf but I can't remember it. And I don't recognise the ferns. Altogether it looks good. However, I agree with Colin...

    Pallandarium

I don't know enough to be able to offer suggestions, but it sounds a very exciting project! Pleas post photos etc - I'm interested in the orchid aspect, too - I love orchids and have quite a few. I'd never thought of incorporating them into any sort of aquascape though - I'dlove to see how...

Stick them in an envelope and send them to me, then. I'll have them - we don't find them in puddles here in the UK. That is why Barry's is an unpopular opinion.

I like betta, corydoras, tiger barbs, swordtails and amano shrimps but I wouldn't keep swordtails because of MANY BABIES! Agree that lemon tetras (and glowlight tetras!) are under-rated. Angels and arowanas - especially arowanas (they're so UGLY) are definitely over-rated IMO.

They look sly . . . . . . . and have the cold, dead eyes of an aquatic sociopath . . . . . . and they chase the other fish and nip their fins . . . . . . and BITE them. And then they SNEER! Plus they look like they've been steamrollered. d:D

Ah! Sorry! It means gentle, good-natured teasing. Of course you have every right to like/dislike a particular variety of fish - I don't like angelfish myself - and you don't have to justify it to anyone - it's just how you feel about them. I didn't mean to upset you- apologies.
