I'm glad he's feeling better/Betta  - but he still needs more space and a few plants, Barry. If you can give him a nicer home he will thank you for it.

Just checked. I've read them all except two. "Gone to Earth" - Mary Webb (though I have read another of her novels "Precious Bane" which is one of the most beautiful, and beautifully written books I've ever encountered. I think I'll try to get hold of "Gone to Earth" "The Sound and the Fury"...

Matilda IS a lovely story. And I agree about the film. I also love Quentin Blake's illustrations to Roald Dahl's children's books - they are amazing! Such economy of line and yet so much conveyed. I can't think of a Roald Dahl story that the LostBear Cubs didn't enjoy, but I know that The...

Thank you! - I loved it. And your diligence inspired me to look for the other words . . . "Creepy, crawly, slimy things, that stick onto your skin... Horrid beasts with tentacles, that want to pull you in... Squirmy worms, slugs and snails, that lie there in a goo... They'll wait down there...

It was great, wasn't it! I was trying to remember the rest of the theme song "Creepy crawley slimey things that stick onto your skin. Something-something tentacles that try to pull you in . . .", but it's lost . . . my little grey cells are pickled in gin, I think.

Trapdoor snails! They sound exciting <thinks back to children's BBC programme "Trapdoor" with Boney the Skull, Berk the Blue Thing, Drutt the Spider and The Thing Upstairs> <starts humming the theme tune "Don't you open that trapdoor, you're a fool if you dare! Stay away from that trapdoor...

I had never had nerites before these, and essjay (IIRC) recommended them, so i got a couple. I started feeding the occasional slice of blanched cucumber following the advice on here, and they wolf it down! I don't offer it too often, however, otherwise they get complacent about working for a...

I was going to suggest salt but didn't know if it needed to be a particular type (eg pink Himilayan rock salt from the base mines of Nepal or something) and didn't want to suggest the wrong thing. I've certainly put salt in a tank before. HE NEEDS A BIGGER PLACE BARRY - HE'S SICK OF LIVING IN...

Oh Barry - I'm sorry. That doesn't look good, does it? Those folded fins look like he is very unwell. A 2-gallon tanks strikes me as quite small - are those small plants live, or is it just a background? What is the surface area of the tank - is there enough area for oxygen to diffuse into...

Nerites do enjoy a slice of cucumber, though. I cut off the skin, and blanch it for a minute or two in boiling water, then cool it and pop it into the tank. They really enjoy it, and my glowlight tetras seem to enjoy a nibble, too, which surprised me, because they don't otherwise pick food...

Sorry- have to disagree with you re: Melville - totally unreadable. Moby Dick was dreadful. And Billy Budd wasn't much better- how either of them got acclaimed as classics is beyond me.

Take my advice - block up any tiny hole or gap between the tank and the lid etc, because I have found from experience that Nerites are slippery little Houdinis and will be out of the tank and legging it across the carpet first chance they get!

Give half a dozen of the males a little GPS system, and send them across the ocean to me in the UK. The nearest port is Newcastle (where the shipyard used to be). If they can get themselves there and notify me they've arrived I'll meet them at the docks and take them to their new home. They...

Over-population is a huge problem when you have prolific livebearers like guppies, platys etc. If a lot survive, and your local fish places won't take them (because everyone is bringing them hundreds of the li'l tykes), then what do you do? You can't just keep adding more and more aquaria, and...

I've fed my dogs rabbit before, and they've caught them on walks, but I couldn't feed my pet rabbits (we've had rabbits and guinea pigs - and hamsters and gerbils, but not rats) to my dogs. I know it's totally illogical, but to me, when you breed or purchase a living creature it is your...
