Has anyone here had a fish survive dropsy?

RIP poor googly fish. She didn’t survive the night so I didn’t have time to make any decisions about treatment and euthanasia. Yesterday she could jump out of the water to take food from my hand.... at least it was fairly quick.

Has anyone here had a fish survive dropsy?

Aah this is what I’m afraid of. My fish still swims and eats and greets me at the glass, I don’t know how long it will go on. I am yet to find an example of a happy ending to the situation.

Has anyone here had a fish survive dropsy?

What treatments did you try for those 3 months that you feel helped? Do you think it increased his suffering?

Has anyone here had a fish survive dropsy?

I have heard survival is extremely unlikely once pineconing occurs. Despite this there are many remedies, treatments, antibiotics and routines around that claim to help. Have any of you personally had a success story? If so, what did you do that helped?

    Pineconing betta, still lively

Beyond water changes and Epsom salts there isn’t anything else I can really do is there? I suspect I misdiagnosed the bacterial infection as ich when there was still time to fix it. Antibiotics are not easily available here.

    Pineconing betta, still lively

@Colin_T this is a picture of my unfortunate fish, definitely looks like a pine cone to me, she also has fin rot and was treated last week for ich. My guess is the prognosis is terrible.

    Pineconing betta, still lively

I have recently treated the tank for internal parasites and ich parasites. The overall health in the tank was stable for a few months and then plummeted. I’m going to work hard to get it back.

I will post a picture if her when I get home. The poop is chunky and white I think, I never seem to catch her in the act...

    Pineconing betta, still lively

@Deanasue thankyou for the advice. I will try this. I haven’t seen her eat any fry and the numbers don’t appear to be dropping but I will try and organise a quieter tank setup for her.

    Pineconing betta, still lively

I thought that last night she might been but decided it was a trick of the light. Today it is definitely not a trick of the light. She is still swimming around and eating, she just jumped to take a pellet from my finger. Should I add salt to the tank? I cannot get antibiotics here. She has...

How can I discourage staghorn algae?

Thankyou for this advice. There isn’t much space for more plants. The plants I have in the 10 gallon are limnophila, hygrophila difformis, hygrophila polysperma, Brazilian pennywort. There is frogbit but it is small and sparse. The other tank is 6 gallon and has African water fern, rotala...

How can I discourage staghorn algae?

Assuming that it is staghorn.... I have had it in low quantities for a while but recently it has started to cover the leaves of my newest plants. It doesn’t come off of the leaves here it is established. I am not adding liquid fertiliser, lights are on for 6-8 hours and are medium intensity...

@NCaquatics have you had any luck removing it? Most internet solutions involve either Hydrogen peroxide or liquid carbon.

A stubborn, hairy algae that doesn’t clean off...

Hello. I have a new problem algae in a couple of my tanks. It is a green/grey woolly algae edging some of the leaves in the tank. It doesn’t come off without damaging the plants. Does anyone know what it might be and the best way to remove it? I am already doing water changes every other day in...

Anacharis keeps dying. Are there other fast growing plants that fill that niche?

It is, I grew it as a kid 15 miles from here without problems in low ph and low hardness water. I have something better now though, water wisteria, it grows rapidly and seems to help prevent algae.

Thankyou @seangee i will try this, my frogbit is definitely looking a bit stunted at the moment

I stopped adding fertiliser during a Cyanobacteria outbreak, should I start adding them again?

I have finally got on top of my slime algae problem in one of my tanks. It is now heavily planted with hygrophila difformis, hygrophila polysperma, limnophila, frogbit, red tiger lotus and Brazilian pennywort. I have been using clay root tabs and nothing else. Will a liquid fertiliser upset the...

I’ve just over overdosed my fish on diy c02. Is there an emergency treatment that can help them recover?

@Colin_T thankyou! This information just isn’t readily available on any of the planted tank forums or tutorials i have been following.

I’ve just over overdosed my fish on diy c02. Is there an emergency treatment that can help them recover?

So I can see.... my investigation before led me to believe that it was much harder to over do it with the diy vs canisters. I will be more careful next time.

I’ve just over overdosed my fish on diy c02. Is there an emergency treatment that can help them recover?

I just set up my first c02 reaction using citric acid and sodium bicarbonate. I was was so focused on getting the bottle pressure right that I did t realise quite how much had gone in. I have turned it off, removed the airline and turned up my sponge filters. It was on for about 15 minuits and...

Accidentally have Endler fry in my betta tank, is my betta at risk?

The tap water here is much more suited to live bearers then betta, I’m trying to counter this by adding a little rainwater to the betta tank to soften it a little. I can soon get acidic untreated spring water which is good for the betta but not the endlers.

Accidentally have Endler fry in my betta tank, is my betta at risk?

Hi, this is a bit rambling...I have recently had a stocking mishap involving a new female Endler guppy who delivered fry in the post and 24 days later dropped more fry.... to accommodate them I have moved my betta from the 10 gallon he honestly didn’t like much to the 6.6 gallon that had the...

Anacharis keeps dying. Are there other fast growing plants that fill that niche?

The ends are buried and the lighting is on for 6-8 hours, this time of year a bit of direct sunlight light gets to the tank if I forget to throw a blanket over it.

That’s a good idea. Do they keep the pink colour or is that just for experts and photos?
  33. Irksome

Anacharis keeps dying. Are there other fast growing plants that fill that niche?

No, my water is fairly hard. I grew anacharis very successfully as a child in very soft water of ph6.2 in an unfiltered unlit tank. My current setup is ph8, GH14 with lights, ferts and filtration.

Anacharis keeps dying. Are there other fast growing plants that fill that niche?

I’m looking for hardy plants that grow quickly but are suitable for a small low tech tank. I am trying and failing to keep my anacharis from going see through and dissolving into messy mush. I love the look of it and I know is is supposed to be almost indestructible but mine isn’t. The plants I...

Really? Mine haven’t grown any bigger in 8 months. They are 1.5cm. they don’t really have any food after they ate every single baby snail in the tank within 2 weeks of being introduced.
