    Hey Gary !

This (related by Author) was one of my favorite books when I was young, I would pour over it when I wasn't reading a model rocketry book by G. Harry Stein, or The Complete Walker by Colin Fletcher. Hopefully it is still on a shelf somewhere at my mothers house...

We actually had a drunk resident, take out multiple mail boxes, and a pole (this time with live wires across the street) two poles down from mine. Her car was totaled and nearly ended up in a house. It was lucky that she didn't make it to the turn in front of my house because she would likely...

Ours actually sat upright on the ground as it was clipped maybe 6" from the ground. This guy?, was probably driving a huge vehicle, plowed through some large bushes, a decorative fence, and took out two mailboxes and the pole. You could see where he backed up and tracked mud back into the...

Citric acid? See if you can remove the pump in case it affects the o-ring and and any exposed rotor metal.

I had a (likely) drunk person clip off our utility pole at ground level and drive off before anyone (including the police) arrived. The pole remained standing and the power was good and the utility company was going to replace it when they got to it in a few days. The next day, the stress on...

    Siphon / Syphon Pump

You can start without suction. Just fill the tube with water, hold outflow end closed, other end in tank, lower outflow end below tank, uncover outflow end.

It doesn't have a gravel cleaner and is very short. Get a Python, you won't regret it. Or make your own with food grade tubing. Make a gravel cleaner from a drink bottle and attach to the hose.

Look at this cool cicada on a tree!

Growing up in STL MO, cicadas were rare, I think we had one brood (17 yr IIRC) my entire childhood. Since the annuals are common in GA, I get a nice audio flashback (similar to smells) every summer.

Your melting ice is not getting into the water? Or if so, is it pretreated?

When should i do another water change and how much

If you do a 75% change, you will have 5 ppm Nitrate. When levels get at 10 ppm, do a 50% change. This will keep the level at 5-10 ppm. Remember you are removing other things we don't measure for so I would change 50% every 2 (or 3) weeks max even if Nitrates are not at 10 ppm. You can also add...

    What are you doing today?

These were cheap shelves on sale at Lowes ($47) and the MDF shelving seems to be the weak point, I want them to last so I am spending approximately an extra $10/unit to protect the MDF since it will be in the garage.

    What are you doing today?

Oil based Polyurethane. Two coats cut 50% with mineral spirits, followed with uncut topcoat. There is quite a lot of opinion on how to do this, but two things to keep in mind is that MDF is very porous, and you do not want to get it wet with water.

Look at this cool cicada on a tree!

I love cicadas, luckily we have the annual species here in GA so it is a summertime delight every year. Did you know that periodic cicada periods are all prime numbers? This is to minimize brood hatching overlaps.

And just for Colin ... Count how many fists, including fractional part, from horizon (accounting for terrain) to the zenith (directly overhead). Divide 90 by this number to get degrees per fist. e.g. If you measure 8.5 fists you calculate the following: 90 deg/8.5 fists = 10.6 deg/fist

@Rocky998 , If you can approximate the elevation of the arcs and the Sun in degrees above the horizon, the exact type can be determined.

The RASC (Royal Astronomical Society of Canada) puts out an awesome Observers Handbook, mine is 2017 edition ISBN 978-1-927879-06-01, that goes into mind-numbing details on many things. Reading the text (ibid pp 201, 202) it appears to be either a Circumhorizontal or Circumzenithal arc.

Is there a way to reverse siphon- using it to add water?

Not to keep the train from teetering on the track, but another reason not to use hot water for fish or human consumption is that some older homes have lead based solder joints which are generally safe (if pH is not low) but temperature increases the leaching of lead compounds if they are present.

Change water once a week VS continuous drip.

Similarly, at a high enough drip rate, you will be equal to periodic large water change pollution rates. The big CON, assuming water is plentiful and cheap, is treatment if required. A massive WC allows you to treat the changed water with accurate measurement. I would be hesitant to trust a...

Change water once a week VS continuous drip.

It's simple math (maybe not simple, but you can simulate via a spreadsheet). There is a point where frequent smaller partial water changes equals massive water changes. The issue is the setup/takedown labor costs. As an (extreme) example, if I change 10% of the water every hour, this will...

Change water once a week VS continuous drip.

I'm curious as why not drip 24/7 at a slower rate? If you did that, parameters would be more constant and you would just leave it on.
