    Angelfish and Rosy Tetras

Would these be good tank mates? The angels are relatively young and approximately 1" in diameter excluding fins. I have two going into a 75g and would like to add another two, possibly three (same size) if that is recommended for their well-being and my tank size. Online info is contradictory...

When ammonia drops but not nitrite and other cycling issues

First of all, let me thank everyone who has offered guidance and/or given advice and instruction. I don't really care to get into arguments and theories on the "correct" way to do this. That's an impossible task or a least a bridge too far if you ask me. I was thrust back into fish-keeping...

Even though the heater is not old, seems it could be faulty/not up to the task.

How to keep tank warm in the winter?

When you're home, what is your typical indoor temperature? We had sub-freezing temps here for about a week (last week), the house temp at night gets to low 60s, but my tank temp did not change, not even a degree. It's a fairly new set-up so I check it every morning and night. Is it possible...

When ammonia drops but not nitrite and other cycling issues

Here are my current tank parameters, as far as what I have the ability to test for. Planted tank, about 6 weeks in: GH: approx. 55 ppm KH: too high to measure on my test chart > 200 ppm pH: 7.2 ammonia: < .25 according to recent history of daily testing, I expect it to be at zero this time...

Yes I think you do - by my count that's 43 fish!

Once my tank is cycled, what % water change is recommended? Are we talking 90%?

When ammonia drops but not nitrite and other cycling issues

I’ll have to be diligent about water changes (no big deal I’ll teach my kids how, too) but I do like the fish options for our soft water.

I’ll wait it out then. pH is 7.2-7.4 and KH is certainly high. Thanks for your advice.

When ammonia drops but not nitrite and other cycling issues

I did add baking soda. It took over 20 drops to change the color on the KH test. I’m thinking I’ll just do a water change now unless you advise otherwise. All parameters are good except for the one I seem to have altered myself by adding the baking soda. I had it backwards, the effect of...

When ammonia drops but not nitrite and other cycling issues

Yeah I did something similar and finally lost count. Then I was so far from anything on the chart I gave up and tested the tap. I did add baking soda BTW, and I’ll wait a bit then perhaps a water change.

When ammonia drops but not nitrite and other cycling issues

Yes, I forgot to mention - the API test. After one drop it is the palest of blue, then with each subsequent drop it darkens. I don’t mind doing a water change I just wondered if it will interrupt the cycle or something, which to a novice like me, appeared to be near completion.

When ammonia drops but not nitrite and other cycling issues

GH/KH kit arrived. GH is 53.7 - took 3 drops to change and then the chart gives that figure. KH I cannot get a reading. No amount of drops changes the color. These are figures from the tank water. From the tap I get a KH reading similar to GH if not closer to 70 ppm. Should I add baking...

When ammonia drops but not nitrite and other cycling issues

Rocky you strike me as a kid who wouldn't want to misspell or misunderstand a term or word. So "vial" or test tube is what we use as (amateur) water chemists. Vial, not vile. Very different meaning.

It'd be nice, and I certainly don't mean necessary, if there were a bit more blank white space between the color rows. Sometimes a nearby hue can influence one's perception of a neighboring hue.

When ammonia drops but not nitrite and other cycling issues

I see ammonia as around 1 ppm-ish and nitrites dropped big time; I see it as between 0-.25. Nitrate between 10-20 ppm. My eyes are older than yours but look at when I really isolate the colors we're discerning :

When ammonia drops but not nitrite and other cycling issues

Make that Saturday on the GH/KH test kit. Tank was/is pretty cloudy, quite a bit less so today. Ammonia is essentially zero, pH 7.2, nitrite never seems to deviate in my tank... 2.0 ppm. Nitrate? About 30 ppm. I'm going to do a 90% water change, then add each and every brand that claims to...

Will the frames of each tank fit level and squarely on the stand and it's only the stand's legs that aren't sitting evenly and level on your floor? Meaning a solid shim on the short leg(s) would be a solution?

When ammonia drops but not nitrite and other cycling issues

Thanks for the info as usual. Today pH is 7.2, ammonia .50 ppm and nitrite between 1.0-2.0 ppm. Tank is pretty cloudy, I don't know if this is bacterial bloom or what. I did move a plant and stirred up the gravel a bit but it wouldn’t explain this much cloudiness.

After adding the baking soda the pH reads about 6.8- 7. I wonder why it dropped as much as it did and I think having several large pieces of driftwood may not be a great idea for my tank.

I have Seachem Neutral Regulator I bought for another tank. I haven’t used it based on the idea that is was nothing but a temporary fix for a larger problem. You mean use it if needed here because the big water change at the end will rid my tank of it anyway?
