Remove rockwool from plant roots, or leave it on?

I had to remove most of the root system from my plants, they were so tangled up with the wool they came off as I removed it. All the plants have grown back strong though. So long as there is some root structure left they will grow back and encouraging new root growth is a good thing.

Honey gourami eating plants - should I feed more?

As the title says, I've noticed that my honey gourami are eating some plant leaves. Does this mean I'm under feeding them? Spec: 58l planted tank 4 honey gourami (1 male) 10 glowlight rasbora 5 amano shrimp I currently feed crumbled flake once a day. Every 4 days or so they get a 'treat'...

    Adding next fish

You may have seen my thread in the planted section. I recently set up a 15g planted tank following a silent cycle - fairly heavily planted. The tank has been running for about 6 weeks now. 10 glowlight rasbora and 5 amano shrimp are the current occupants and have been in for just over a week...

    15g first occupants!

My salvinia is taking over! I quite like it though as I'm going for a low light low flow set-up, just honey gourami to add now. Quite a lot of brown algae on the plants, hopefully these guys take it down!

    15g first occupants!

Added 5 amano shrimp today. Funny little guys! They started tucking in to the algae straight away. I'm a bit cocerned about the T. hengeli though, they are so timid and skittish! Whenever I go near the tank they dart around. Could adding the shrimp have upset them? One is hiding behind a rock...

    Silent cycle - plant list

Thanks! 10 trigonostigma hengeli (glowlight rasbora) seem to be settling in nicely. I started a new thread in the tropical discussion forum with some pictures. I sent the red light back, didn't like the look of it and given I had algae anyway thought the single light was probably strong enough...

Crumbling up the flakes along with them getting more at home seems to have worked today, thanks.

    15g first occupants!

Just tetra branded flake so far. I've been turning off the filter when adding flakes, which means it sits on the surface longer. Maybe I'll leave it on next time. A few of them have had a little nip at the flakes but no more than a bite that I've seen.

    15g first occupants!

Thank you. I spent qutie a lot of time thinking about and editing the scape before I got the fish. I added a black background this afternoon. I'm still getting used to it, but the colours look brighter certainly. I'll post some more pictures for sure!

    15g first occupants!

Hmm, I think you are right. Looking at seriously fish they do appear to be hengeli! Will see if the colour changes as they settle. They seem quite happy and are noticably move adventurous as time goes by. They have yet to show any interest in food, though. They've only been in about 30 hours so...

Water changes am I to careful

Maybe you saw my post? In the UK combi boilers are common, heat mains water on demand. So no worries about storage tank issues.

    15g first occupants!

Thought I'd share a couple of pictures of the first occupants of my newly set up 15 gallon planted tank. 10 trignostigma espei (lampchop rasbora). They seem quite happy hanging out under the cover of the salvinia and generally exploring their new surroundings. I tried to give them a little...

    Silent cycle - plant list

One final small re-scape last night. Moved the java fern on the higher levels of the azalea root to a lava rock. They were too close to the light and subject to hair algae. I think they'll be better suited to this corner on the rock. Ammonia and nirtite both tracking zero. Plants showing strong...

Water change - too hot or too cold?

On a similar subject, as I'm adding tap water direct to the tank from the tap I add my dechlorinator while it's running. So some water goes in there while there's no dechlorinator. I assume this is fine, but then wonder why people say washing filter media will kill bacteria? Maybe sort term...

Water change - too hot or too cold?

Problem is that the temperature changes over time while the tap is running. So I can set it off about right but then the boiler kicks in or out. Also depends on how fast the flow is.

Water change - too hot or too cold?

I have a JBL aqua in/out for water changes (German version of a Python). It's great, but as a one man job it's not possible to adjust the water temperature while filling the tank. I'm too scared to leave the pipe incase it falls out and pours water everywhere. It's not easy to get the tap water...

    Silent cycle - plant list

My dimmer/timer switch arrived today. Just wondered what schedule you have yours running? At the moment it's set to come on at 80% from 8am till midday, then off till 4pm, when it comes on at 80% rising to 100% from 5pm till 9pm. So 4 hours at 100% and 5 hours at 80%. I've just today started...

    Silent cycle - plant list

I've been away for a week for half term. Upon return there's a fairly large hair algae outbreak and the azalea root has developed a biofilm all over. Water parameters are looking good: Ammonium: 0ppm Nitrite: 0ppm Nitrate: 10-15ppm (tap is ~30ppm) QUESTION: What should I do about the azalea...

    Silent cycle turned fishless...

Thanks. I changed 50% of the water last night. Nitrite is now at 1.5ppm. Will change more water tomorrow to get it down further. If ammonia stays at 0 next week and plants continue to fill out I'll start looking for those first fish!

    Silent cycle turned fishless...

Hello, I've got a heavily planted 15g tank that has been running for 10 days. Plants are doing well, salvinia now takes up around a quarter of the surface, hygrophilia and limnophilia both growing well. I've been monitoring my water parameters and ammonia had been present at a low level...

    Silent cycle - plant list

Water parameters this evening: Ammonia: 0.25ppm Nitrite: 2ppm Nitrate: 10-20ppm PH: 7.6 Interesting that I've only added plants to my new tank yet it seems to be tracking a similar pattern to a fishless cycle. I didn't realise that having a well planted tank the rotting leaves will give off...

First sign of algae... Just starting to appear on the lagenandra meeboldii leaves. Only on those at the top of the tank, close to the lights. So I'm guessing the light intensity up there is the problem. Any suggestions other than remove those leaves?

    Malaysian Trumpet Snails

My tank has been up and running for a week now, fairly heavily planted and I'm aiming for a silent cycle. I bought my plants from pro-shrimp and so far I haven't seen any snails. In a previous tank I got my plants from LFS and the tank was teeming with snails. Do people buy snails?? If none...

    Silent cycle - plant list

Tested my water this evening: Ammonia 0.5ppm Nitrite 0.5ppm Nitrate 20ppm (tap is ~30ppm) I can understand the ammonia being the adjustment and breakdown of the new plants, but I'm not sure about the nitrite. Seems a bit soon for bacteria to be converting ammonia to nitrite? I'm not adding...
