    Best US plant stores?

I've been happy with Aquarium Co Op plants. Not as large a selection but the plants are high quality in my experience.

    Shrimp questions

Those are female. When a shrimp is berried you can see the tiny baby shrimp on their bellies; it will be fairly obvious. I would buy a few more if you want them to breed and try to make sure you get a male. It's so much fun to watch. That's a beautiful color. I have RCS, yellow, and blue...

How many red cherry shrimps with a betta and 6 neon tetra?

If you add shrimp, I don't think you need a bottom feeder. They do a pretty good job of cleaning the bottom in my experience once there are enough of them. On the betta, neon tetra question: make sure there isn't too much chasing or nipping going on. Also, watch the betta for fin rot or tears...

How many red cherry shrimps with a betta and 6 neon tetra?

I'm terrified of shipping live animals, but if you're ever in VA, I'm happy to give you a bunch to take back with you.

How many red cherry shrimps with a betta and 6 neon tetra?

I think your tank is overstocked and I would rehome the pleco. I also don't think bettas and neon tetras are ideal tankmates though I know it's possible. The betta is often stressed over time even if it looks ok. Stressed fish get sick easier and suffer fin rot easier. I have a 10G with six...

    20 Gallon Community Tank, Goldfish?

I wouldn't put a goldfish in a 20G; too small in my opinion.
  9. hansgruber7

can all this fish fit in my 10 gallon tank?

In my opinion that's way too much for a 10 gallon. You need a bigger tank for all that. Get a betta for a 10G or maybe a school of 6 fish at most would be my recommendation.
  10. hansgruber7

    Higher quality bettas

Ah. I don't know about that kind of multicolored then. The one in my profile pic is alive and well a year and a half later.
  11. hansgruber7

    Higher quality bettas

I don't know about the Plakats or what people mean by "mulitcolored" but I bought three bettas on aquabid and they've all been healthy. One of them is multi-colored in my profile pic (though he shifted colors over time which I think is normal.) The others weren't multi-colored but were...

    I cant find my kuhlis

Your Kuhlis are probably there hiding somewhere. I will go weeks without seeing any of the four I have in my 20 Gallon, but then at night I will spot them occasionally. Make sure you put some sinking food in after lights out to make sure they have something to eat. Otherwise, they should be...

    Fish Similar to Harlequin Rasbora

They tend to be a bit shy and less hardy, but I've enjoyed celestial pearl danios. If you get the tank right, their personalities can be fun to watch. Beautiful fish.

    Higher quality bettas

You can get some pretty nice bettas on aquabid.com. Many are sourced in the US and the prices vary. I bought three bettas there and have had a good experience every time.

    22 gallon community tank

Yes, it looks berried to me.
  16. hansgruber7

    Java fern

I find there's usually an adjustment period when you add your java fern to your tank. It may struggle and you just need to prune the brown leaves and let the healthy leaves grow in and once it's adjusted to your tank conditions it will bounce back. Just make sure you are adding a fertilizer...

Should I get an assassin snail for mini ramshorns?

Yes, I would just get an assassin snail. I bought one a year ago to control my snail infestation and he's done a good job of it and is still alive. In a tank that size he's unlikely to kill all of them so he won't starve, but he will control the numbers. Even if all the snails are killed, he...

    Clean up crew

I only kept one and he did a good job of eating algae, but he kept attacking my other fish so I had to get rid of him.
  19. hansgruber7

    Clean up crew

I think Siamese Algae Eaters will eat it, but that comes with other sorts of challenges sometimes. They can be boisterous in my experience.

    Recommend a fertilizer please.

I use Easy Green from Aquarium Co-op too and it's been great. Highly recommend.
  21. hansgruber7

Does this betta have pop eye?

I wouldn't worry too much about the color changes if your water parameters are ok. Color changes are common in those kinds of bettas. The original one does look like popeye to me, but it's hard to be sure.
  22. hansgruber7

    Pure Water

You can do most of the trial and error before adding the water to the aquariums. Just test the parameters of the RO water and the aquariums before you add it each time at the beginning. If you keep the water changes relatively low percentage each time, it gives you a little more room for error.
  23. hansgruber7

    Just getting started

Yes, I agree that 30-50% plants is ideal. But any amount of plants is better than none. You can read up on "in-fish cycle" but I think it's better to try to get it fully cycled before adding fish personally. Having done tanks with bettas alone and also relatively successful community tanks...

    New tank advice

I completely agree with Utar and I think you should avoid that impractical aquarium. However, I think OP said GLOfish, rather than GOLDfish.
  25. hansgruber7

    Pure Water

I would just buy an RO Buddy, get some Seachem Equilibrium (I use the Aqualine and Acid buffers to stabilize PH). Then get an extra API Testing kit and experiment testing the water until you get what you need. Then just go with that and make adjustments as you need to. The tricky part I find...

Does this betta have pop eye?

It doesn't look normal to me. Seems like something is off there.
  27. hansgruber7

    Pure Water

I use RO water and use Seachem Equilibrium along with Seachem Aqualine and Acid buffers and that's it. Seems to work well and the parameters have stayed stable, for what it's worth. I was forced into this because I have terrible tap water too. You might consider buying the RO Buddy system...

    New tank advice

Personally, I think wider tanks are better. Most fish like to swim side-to-side rather than up and down.
  29. hansgruber7

    Just getting started

Living plants will help with cycling and also will help your fish. If you start with column feeders (don't need soil) it's easier. That would be java ferns, anubias, and floating plants like frogbit. The only thing they need is light really. You might need to add some nutrients (I dose one...

    Floating Plants

    My betta likes his frogbit.

    Dream tank

Sometimes I dream of becoming a dentist or some kind of business owner and I could pay someone out of my business funds to maintain an awesome aquarium at my business in the waiting room or something.
  32. hansgruber7

    Just getting started

I think the API kit is the best one to go with. Is that a ten gallon? Maybe start with a betta. Or five or six tetras or something hardy. Have you considered real plants? It may feel overwhelming, but you could just get a java fern or anubia attached to some driftwood or even some floating...

Fin rot seemingly returning immediately after salt treatment, help!

Fin rot can be really tough to deal with on bettas. Sometimes it happens despite doing everything right. What plants do you have? Do you have a full tank picture? I could be wrong, but I feel like sometimes boredom and lack of hiding places can stress a betta and lead to fin rot. But that's...
  34. hansgruber7

    Betta in community tank

I've tried it and it can work though I don't think it's ideal. It almost always involves growing stress and problems with either the betta or the other fish. Also, managing feeding is difficult as bettas tend to pig out and get sick in community tanks if you're not careful.
  35. hansgruber7

    Betta Fish Fin Tears

Have you tested your water? Poor water quality can stress a fish and can lead to fin rips as well as fin rot as the fish's behavior can change when it is stressed. Fin rips can sometimes be from boredom or other types of stress. I think some real plants would help personally. Good luck.
  36. hansgruber7

    Is this fin-rot?

Yes, it looks like mild fin rot to me, but as long as you keep your water quality pristine, I think he should be fine without medication personally. Medication is always a bit risky so I try to avoid it unless there is no other way.
  37. hansgruber7

What would you get for a new 20g?

This is what I did with my dream 20 gallon. Just Celestial Pearl Danios and Kuhli loaches. I love it.

Betta clamped fins - don't know what else to do

Do you have a full picture of the tank?
  40. hansgruber7

    Are my betta's fins okay?

You should test your water, especially for ammonia. I would up your water changes to every week. Every other week is not enough in my opinion.
