3 new tanks - cycling for species only

Oh yes, Colin, remember, I was all excited when I discovered I could seed sponge filters from my main tank. :) When I say "I added a sponge filter" I mean I took and replaced a sponge filter from an established tank. The only exception is the 20 long. That one is cycling old-school. I added...

3 new tanks - cycling for species only

I went on a little shopping spree and bought 3 new (small) tanks this weekend. A 20 gallon long, and 2 10 gallon tanks. I put a sponge filter in each one and I'm cycling them now. One of the 10 gallon tanks has the water and substrate and decor from my cycled 2 gallon tank in it, as well as...

Male Betta developed white bump help!

Clean, fresh water is the best heal-all for bettas. 50% weekly is a good place to be for general maintenance. During this time that he's healing, though, I'm sure he'd appreciate an additional water change. If it were my fish, I'd do 2 water changes this week, each at 50%, just to make sure he...

Male Betta developed white bump help!

That spot could very well be a wound from bumping into a sharp imperfection in a tank decoration. It is in the prime position on his body to be an injury like that, on the top of his head. That exact location is where I have seen most betta injuries, with the exception of the fins. Remove the...

    Rot or Not?

Without pictures of his current state to compare we're just taking shots in the dark here. But, I will say, if you are concerned that your betta doesn't look quite right, fresh water is a much better remedy than jumping to medication. One of my male bettas had mild fin rot when I got him...

    Betta lethargic but eating regularly

Oftentimes if a betta is lethargic, it's because the water isn't an appropriate temperature (no heater). However, since you went an entire month without doing maintenance on a 2.5 gallon tank, it's possible he's suffering from ammonia poisoning. With such a small tank, you really *need* to be...

Male Betta developed white bump help!

Yes, please do post pictures; it will be difficult to diagnose without pictures. What size tank is this? Male bettas can generally get along with corys if the tank is big enough, but 99% of the time betta owners don't have a big enough tank for tank mates, and it causes territory and aggression...

    Ich in my community tank

Roseanne stopped expelling tapeworm (no more stringy white poo). In fact she’s stopped going poo altogether. She hasn’t eaten in at least 2 weeks now. I’ve tried to feed her every day but 10 or 20 minutes later she still hasn’t touched it so I take the food out. Now she has clamped fins. She’s...

New to aquariums, and I just have some questions :)

+1 on the betta train. 5 gallons is perfect for a single betta. Don't buy any fish until the tank is cycled, though. If you buy a fish before that tank is cycled, it will make the fish sick, or you'll be stuck changing the water every day for weeks to keep it from getting sick.

    Brand new tank owner...questions

Hey welcome! It's faster and more humane to cycle a tank with out fish in it. I know it's boring to look at a fish tank with no fish in it for 4 or 5 weeks, but when you have fish in the tank, you have to change the water more often to keep them from getting sick, and that can stall the cycle...

    Ich in my community tank

I haven’t checked in in a couple of days so here’s an update. I lost that Cory with the rotted fin. So that’s 2 Corys now gone. Also one of the tetras turned pasty pale white, floated at the top of the water for a few hours, and then died. I have been reducing the temperature of the tank...

    Ich in my community tank

Hey thanks Colin. Unfortunately, Roseanne (the betta with tapeworm) won’t eat, still. So I’m treating the water. Like I said, she’s in her own 1 gallon bowl right now with a spare sponge filter. It’s been at least an entire week since she’s eaten so I am worried about that, but this morning I...

    Ich in my community tank

Part of me wants to just grab this worm with some tweezers and pull. Here’s Roseanne in her hospital tank (a bowl from my kitchen) Another Cory suddenly has rotted fins. I’ve isolated this one, like I did the other. But the last one who’s fins rotted so rapidly died the next day, so I’m not...

Most Intelligent Species In the Hobby

What species do you believe are the most intelligent that can be kept in the home aquarium? Of course in saltwater there's some really super intelligent species, like cuttlefish and octopi. But what about in freshwater? Bettas tend to have a lot of personality, and can be trained to do tricks...

Newbie, I'm thinking about getting some shrimp.. suggestions?

Those look like clown loaches to me, not tiger barbs. Same story, they need to be in groups of at least 6. They can get somewhat large though. I've heard of them eating snails before. Not sure about shrimp. Is the other fish a denison barb? EDIT: Later pics confirm these are *NOT* clown...

    Ich in my community tank

Saturday night one of my corydoras was looking pretty rough. I had assumed the tetras were fin nipping the corys, but then Saturday one of them had rapidly developed severe fin rot. I put him in a breeder box, and by Sunday morning he was dead. Picture attached. This is what he looked like...

Cory pectoral fins are stubs and barbels gone

As for *how* to add sand to an existing aquarium, you could try something like this: Just make sure you keep the sand submerged when adding it. If you are above the water level and dump it in, it will stick to the top and get all cloudy. Pouring it from below the water will keep it from...

    African Dwarf Frogs Water level

Okay yeah then raising the water level might be what you needed. Like I said, it takes longer for bigger water quantities to become toxic. At a foot and a half deep, you might want to provide some surfaces for the frogs to rest on that aren’t so deep. You can get reptile platforms that suction...

How long has the tank been running? Are you using a filter? How often do you change the water? And how do you change the water? Do you use a gravel vac? Are you treating the water when you change it with anything? If yes, what and how much? African Dwarf Frogs put off a lot of waste (urine/poo)...

Tank Stocking Aggression Issues & Fish ID help?

No, they are going to treat those fish like a SKU number and put them back in display tanks to be resold. The only exception is if you say they're sick. Then they might quarantine them for a few weeks before putting them back on display to be resold. They don't euthanize fish just for being...

So quantity is when it becomes important, then? Is there some sort of standard for them? Like there is with the 1 inch of fish per gallon standard? I know that 1 inch of fish per gallon rule is flawed, but it's a commonly used standard none-the-less. Is there a similar standard with small...
