    Driftwood not sinking

Apologies. I thought you meant rocks that were already in use in a fish tank. Yes, you do want to test & clean the rocks first. River rocks are probably safe, but test them to be sure.

    Driftwood not sinking

Yes, you can weigh the wood down with rocks, no problem. It might scratch the wood a bit if you're not careful, but if you are gentle with it that shouldn't be a problem. Maybe tie the wood down onto some rocks with fishing line.

    Weight down an ornament

I agree with @mikey11 here, I think the problem is air inside the ornament. I've had ornaments that are hollow like that. I have one now. I have to put it in the tank upside down and let it fill with water, then I flip it upright and it stays on the bottom just fine.

    Where to grow pest snails?

Do snails eat detritus worms? I know some shrimp do. If they do, then I could just go ahead and get some snails this week and let them clean the tank of detritus for the puffers, then when the puffers arrive they will eat the snails.

    Where to grow pest snails?

As a side-note, the pea puffer tank has a lot of detritus worms in it. Probably snuck in with some plants. Will the detritus cause any problems for the puffers? I've seen fish eat detritus worms before, particularly neon tetras and bettas, so I'm thinking it might just be another food source for...

    Where to grow pest snails?

My pea puffer tank will be cycled by this weekend. Last weekend I was getting some nitrites and nitrates, but no ammonia, so I expect that by the time I test again this coming weekend the nitrites should be done. Of course I will test to confirm, but once I'm in the clear, I'll be getting the...

    Rosetail Betta Article Scare

If your tank has lots of resting places and a low flow, I wouldn't worry. If it becomes a problem you might want to consider trimming his fins, but that is an extreme solution for a problem you don't even have right now. Now that you know his fins can cause problems, just be aware of that. You...

    Seeking Betta Information

PetCo generally has better quality bettas than PetSmart does. They have a more refined selection as well. Personally, I've had some bad luck with PetSmart bettas, and when looking through the cups I find more sick bettas at PetSmart than I do at PetCo. I still find sick ones at PetCo, but not...

New to owning fish - Please Help

I'm almost wondering if this might be some sort of chemical contamination. When you clean the tank, are you using any chemicals or cleaning products? When you change the water, are you using a fresh bucket that has never been used for chemicals, or are you using the same bucket you mop your...

    Restarting aquarium after vacation?

If you're hard-set on getting rid of the fish prior to vacation, I'd still keep something in there while you are gone, even if it's just snails or shrimp. If you don't want to deal with algae, as per Colin's suggestion, you could put a pleco in the tank and some driftwood for it to gnaw on. Just...

Angelfish & Balloon Molly. Plus other questions!

I hate to be so blunt here, but the pet shop you bought these fish from gave you bad advice. It sounds to me like these "points" the pet store used to help you stock your tank were based off of the current size of your fish, not their full-grown-adult size. Ignoring the size these fish grow to...

Angelfish & Balloon Molly. Plus other questions!

Your tank is already overstocked. :( I know it doesn't seem like it yet because the Yoyo loach and the Angelfish haven't grown out yet. But once they reach maturity you'll see. That angelfish will be as tall as the aquarium, and the loach is going to reach half a foot long. Your tank is the...

Tiger barbs turning white over night

It's scary the first time you see your fish go pasty white, isn't it? It's stress related. I know if I'm dead asleep, and someone comes in and turns on a bright light in my eyes, and starts making noise, that's a stressful way for me to wake up. If you use a timer, make sure the curtains are...

    Worm identification

+1 on detritus worms. And that's why you have an infestation. You're not going to get "rid" of these worms. You can reduce their population with routine gravel cleanings and water changes, though. Once a month is not frequent enough for water changes. Even if you're changing all of the water...

    Betta and popeye

If he's not moving around and seems very lethargic, popeye is probably a symptom of a larger problem in his tank. Do you have a water test kit that tests for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates? If so, please test the water and post the results here. If not, you can take a cup of water from his tank...

For the salt bath, dissolve the salt in tank water *before* adding it to the tank. Don't just pour salt into the tank. If you boil the salt in water, that will work as well, but then you have to wait for the temp to come back down before adding to the tank. Just make sure you do dissolve the...

    Help! Gold rams, ich??

This is absolutely true. I just had an ich outbreak in my main tank, and for the first few days after raising the temp it looked more like the parasite was spreading than dying. Just keep it up for 2 weeks. It is entirely possible you might lose corys during the heat & salt treatment, though. I...

    Possibly fungus

Nobody replied to this yet? I'm sorry. That certainly looks fungal (or possibly bacterial) to me, but I'm not sure, and it's best to hold off on treatment until you are sure what you're treating. Fish don't exactly respond well to medication they don't need. I'm mostly responding to bump your...

    Ich in my community tank

Just picking a bit here and there is what she's doing right now, but it is an improvement, as she wasn't even doing that before. I suspect that within the next couple of days her appetite will continue to improve and she'll be back to normal soon. She was in the main tank when I started the...

    Ich in my community tank

Just checking in with an update: The community tank is, for the most part, put back together. Ich treatment is well over with now, and no new illness or parasites have shown themselves. The only exception to this is Roseanne. Roseanne is still in a hospital tank, but she has finally started...

    Rot or Not?

That is terrible! But live and learn, right? I'm sure moving forward you'll be testing thermometers, and buying heaters that have a temp sensor. Mistakes you only make once. Nitrite is toxic to fish like ammonia is. You should test your water for both, and if you get a reading above 0 on...

lol I have a 30 gallon community tank / female betta sorority, and it feels like the perfect size for that. Stocked with kuhli loaches and neon tetras, and a group of female bettas. Rot or Not?

I know exactly what kind of heater you're talking about... I hate those things. It's one of those heaters that just constantly adds heat to the water. Good that you have it off right now, because those heaters are dangerous and can't be left unattended. I don't understand why pet stores even...

    Betta lethargic but eating regularly

Regarding the filter creating too heavy of a flow for that 2.5 gallon tank, I understand that. Generally, having filtered water is more important than having the right flow, but in some cases the filter can cause problems for a betta. Look online for sponge filters. The ones at this link are...

I definitely do understand. I know you're working off of your own past experience, here. And to be honest you might have just had some very docile angelfish. Sick paradise gourami

It's all in the dorsal (back) fin. Bascially, males have thinner bodies and their dorsal fins come to a point, and females have rounder bodies and their dorsal fins are rounded. These differences are most apparent in adults. Juveniles can be pretty difficult to sex as their fins haven't grown in...

    Sick paradise gourami

Definitely seeing the round belly like you said. If it were dropsy, the fish's scales would be pine-coning, meaning the scales would be sticking out from the body like a pine cone. I don't see that. Even though you feed once every day or every other day, it still could be over eating. Or the...

3 new tanks - cycling for species only

Yeah I'm okay with daily feedings. I can live with that. I'm seeing they need to be fed 2 or 3 times daily. As for the live food...
