    I have inherited a biorb..where to start?

I think you're talking about the nitrogen cycle. It takes more than a few days or a week for a newly set up tank to become ready for fish. Usually it takes 4-6 weeks. Basically, you need a colony of beneficial bacteria to build up in the tank, that can deal with things like fish poop, before...

Skin and fin deteriorating on cichlid

Yes this is my concern. I don't want a tank full of line-bred, inbred fish in a year. I checked the dates on the receipt and I'm past the return time-frame. I've got some things to think about. I might rescape this tank, I might try and unload some fish... we'll see. Thanks again!

Skin and fin deteriorating on cichlid

Thanks Colin. I think I’m going to return the lesser male to the store and keep the dominant male. It’s a 10 gallon tank and I’ve seen the males be aggressive with each other a few times. They even locked jaws once that I saw. So it’s probably best to let one male go.

Skin and fin deteriorating on cichlid

It looks like it’s healing now. Also, this photo showed me how his mouth and teeth are the same size and shape as the wound. I’m confident this is from fighting with the other male. Should I remove one of the males? I have 4 females and both males used to have 2 females each but now the dominant...

Skin and fin deteriorating on cichlid

Does anyone have any idea what is happening with my multifasciatus? It looks like a patch of skin and part of the fin are deteriorating. Fungus? Bacteria? Infection? Could it maybe be a slime coat issue? Here's the best image of it I could get. See the discolored area? See how it looks kind of...

Betta constantly shifting pattern, water levels seem normal

Bettas sometimes change color. There's nothing wrong with him in that regard. His colors will continue to change. This is absolutely normal for marble bettas, and even sometimes non-marbles as they reach maturity. His fins do look a little short, though... like, fin rot short. In crown tails...

I only have one video up now. I will do more videos in the future, to showcase other tanks. But for now, here's my pea puffer tank. It's only 10 gallons, so I only have 3 puffers in it, as they are quite territorial. I'm bad at aquascaping, I admit it. I'm sure I'll move things around...

    Band Room Fish

By school band I'm assuming you mean like the typical horns and flutes and tubas and percussionists, right? Like marching band? I have never seen a classroom properly care for a fish before. A lot of my fish hide when they hear a loud noise. Also, being in a school, I imagine there's going to...

2 or 3 way divided tank?

For along time the standard minimum tank size for a betta was 2.5 gallons, so the understanding was that you could divide a 10 gallon tank 4 ways. But as of late, people are changing their minds, and they say 2.5 gallons is not enough, 5 gallons is now the minimum. And 10 gallon tanks are now...

My betta won't eat blood worms.

Freeze dried blood worms aren't as nutritious or flavorful as the frozen ones. Your betta wants a cheeseburger and you're giving it beef jerky.

    5 Clown Loaches in a 30 gallon?

In a 30 gallon tank I would advise you to get Kuhli Loaches as opposed to Clown Loaches. You can get Kuhli Loaches in a few different colors, including the same orange and black striped pattern like the Clown Loaches have, but they are considerably smaller. They look like little eels, growing to...

    Betta Question

    Heater question this time...lol

Half a degree difference isn't bad at all! In fact, the fish might even appreciate having a "warm area" and a "cool area". Looks like you have a spare heater. :)

Can my Betta join my community tank?

The female bettas are a lot more "community" than the males are, in general. Of course every betta's personality is different, and there are always exceptions, but just because one person was a successful exception does not mean everyone should go try and replicate that exception. With female...

    feeling overwhelmed (with bad advice!)

A lot of good advice here in this thread. Just to add - when setting up a new tank, it's best to go in with a plan. Impulse buying fish, or deciding on the fish after you look around the store, is where a lot of people go wrong. Plan plan plan. Start out by picking out a place in your home...

    Opinions???

I hear that blind cave fish will nip at anything they bump into. Fish, plants, doesn't matter. I don't keep them myself so I can't confirm, but that is what I hear.

    Is this gill flukes?

I very much doubt this is just natural coloration. Something is wrong with my bettas' gills. These (what look like irritation) markings were only on one betta when I bought them months ago, and now they are on all of my bettas. So whatever it is, it spread. The photos in post #2 don't really do...

    Is this gill flukes?

Hmm. What could be causing all of my bettas to have the same (what looks like irritation) markings on their gills? Only one of them had these markings at first and now most of them do. Strangely, the one who doesn’t have those markings is the one who looks like she can’t breathe. So I don’t know...

    Is this gill flukes?

The ones in the pictures, look at their gills. They all have the same two stripes down the gills. On some fish it’s red and on others it’s more silver, but it’s the same 2 stripes on all of them. I was wondering if that looks like gill flukes? They don’t appear to be breathing heavy like the one...

    Is this gill flukes?

This is one of my bettas. She’s laying on the bottom, breathing heavy. No pine coning. I have her in a breeder box right now. Her scales have always been messed up. They’re actually better than they were when I got her. This is the same one who recovered from tapeworm. She’s been through a...

    How’s many fish

That's a lot of prolific livebearers, between the guppies, the swordtails, and the mollies. They will crossbreed. Corydoras are a shoaling (schooling) species and need to be kept in groups of at least 6. Some people will say 3, but really that's like the bare minimum, and they won't be happy...

Considering a Patio Pond - Questions

@seangee - I don't know if I would use a heater or not. It just depends on the needs of the fish and what kind of temperature the water ends up stabilizing at. Over the summer I probably won't need it. That's not a bad idea to "send fish out for a summer holiday" to the pond. That's probably...

Considering a Patio Pond - Questions

I'm considering one of those bowl style small patio ponds. I live in an upstairs condominium, and I have a decent sized private deck. It's not big enough for a hot tub or anything, but it would hold a 30 gallon bowl pond well. I haven't made any decisions yet, I'm just brainstorming right now...

Green tiger barbs turning black and swimming in place

They are stressed because there's not enough barbs (they need to be in groups of a minimum of 6), the tank is too small, and the tank wasn't cycled before you put them in it. No, do not just go buy more barbs and add them to this tank. Yes, they need to be in a larger group, but the tank is...
