    Quest for plakat fry

I just cannot take good pictures of these fry. Older fry, pretty sure I have 2 males so far, the largest white one and the largest normal colored fry. Younger fry The younger fry are showing plenty of color but of course it doesn't show well in pictures. I've been doing daily 50% water...

    Planted Betta Sorority (Pic Heavy)

Sorry Nick, I changed things around anyways. I just needed to find a good place for this hunk of wood. I took it out of the BN fry tank and accidentally brought 2 fry with it, both seem to be doing fine though. Don't mind the water spots. Trimming the crypts seems to be working, the few I...

    29gal Shell-Dweller Colony

No spawning behavior from the multis but the males have stopped fighting :D I used a piece of wood to section off a handful of shells and that seems to be where the lesser male resides. The one shell at the top beside the wood is where the second in command male seems to live. He dug a pit all...

    Question on "Culling"

Culling fry is both a means to insure all surviving fry are of good quality and to keep fry numbers at a manageable number. Runty, odd looking and simply ugly fry are ones you should cull. No one wants to buy an ugly looking fish so better to cull it than let is sit in a pet store till it dies...

    Peacock Cichlid not eating

In my experience the eggs hatch after 10 days of being laid. They are just tiny little specs stuck to their large yolk sacs at first but in another 2 weeks they absorb the yolk and look like fish. So usually it is 3 weeks of holding, then mom cares for the fry for another week or so after...

    Help! About shelldwellers

I would say yes, just make sure you have a male/female pair and not 2 males.

    Help! About shelldwellers

Really depends on the foot print of the tank. The more floor space the better, and really the bigger the better in general. How much room do you have on the desk? I'd not have a pair in anything less than a 5gal tank (the ones with a larger foot print), but even then 10gals is preferred as it...

    Guppies being aggressive?

Adding more fish is not the answer in this case. Generally fish will be aggressive for a few reasons, one being improper housing (such as too small a tank, not enough decor, not enough individuals in a school etc) and another being they are simply rival males/females. Male live-bearers...

    Peacock Cichlid not eating

That is a holding female. Watch it for a few minutes and I bet you will see it "chew" or move the eggs/fry around in its mouth. A male peacock will have longer and pointed anal + dorsal fins. Plus I've noticed that many female peacock will have a golden/yellow tinge to their body while males...

    Fry

Fry need small food, preferbaly live as many egg laying fish fry will only eat moving food. I use micro worms, infusoria, and baby brine shrimp. What species of fish are you trying to feed and how old are they?

    Try for the "blackwater" look

What boy, all pictured fish are female! They're all females in the 29gal except for a male plakat that never grew into his male behavior from the first batch of fry I raised :D He even submits to the females. The male CT was having trouble reaching the surface so he's in a smaller floating...

    Tankmates?

Meaning no offense whatsoever, I would seriously like to know where everyone is getting the idea that dwarf frogs are good with bettas. Amphibians and fish just shouldn't be mixed IMO, unless you want one or the other to get eaten or badly injured. As for tank mates, I stick to bottom...

    Micro planted tank

I haven't been updating much but Vitya was doing rather poorly after I got back from a week long vacation. I had moved him to the 10gal Grey was in a while back and that is where he stayed till the end. The 3.4gal is now home to Otabek Jr. who still needs a proper name. This is the Jr. that...

    Try for the "blackwater" look

I haven't been updating much but Vitya was doing rather poorly after I got back from a week long vacation. He died about a week later. His tank is now the spare 10gal, which just today became a temporary home for a pathetic male CT that some idiot threw in with Bichirs at the petstore I work at...

    Quest for plakat fry

Will post more pictures shortly, for now just a wordy update. For whatever reason the numbers have dwindled from over a dozen to a mere 10 fry in the older batch. Never found dead bodies and all the other looks right as rain. I suspect amano shrimp may have picked off the weaklings. So far...

    Planted Betta Sorority (Pic Heavy)

Went on a shopping spree, spend a good 180ish $$ on fish things, including 3 black loaches to finish off my school for Otabek's tank :D They've been in there for about 2 weeks and they're doing great. Completely forgot to mention this, but a while back Otabek jumped out of the tank! This was a...

    29gal Shell-Dweller Colony

Collected a good 20-some shells at my Grandparent's house. They live on a small lake that has massive snails, the shells from dead snail are always being washed to shore. It took a good while and a lot of scrubbing, shaking and blasting water inside the shells to remove all the gunk that...

    Ugg detritus worms

Detritus worms pop up when you have too much...detritus. I'd guess the plant matter that builds up over the weeks is what the worms are living off of. If you let things build up again I'm pretty sure they will come back. Perhaps switch to every other week water changes and gravel vacs.

    29gal Shell-Dweller Colony

I'd have to buy more tall rocks in that case,I doubt I'll be able to fine suitable rock in my area, but I might try looking around. These guys aren't very skittish at all, in fact the peacock fry seem to act as dither fish. Everyone comes up to the glass when I lift my hand, just like my adult...

    Aquarium Salt

Don't add salt to the main tank, there's not much point to it IMO. Fresh water fish are just that, fresh water. I've used it as a medication but I find it is best used for hatching brine shrimp or adding seasoning to my steak.

    29gal Shell-Dweller Colony

@IHaveADogToo Do you remember how much you paid for your shellies? I do plan on keeping this just shell dweller, the fry are only in there till they grow out a bit, or until I move them to another tank. I played with the idea of adding some top dwelling species but couldn't think of any that...

    29gal Shell-Dweller Colony

Set up the old cichlid fry tank and turned it into a home for Neolamprologus multifasciatus aka the multi banded cichlid! I've been looking for these bad boys for at least a year. Finally found some and they were not cheap. I bought 5 for 15$ a piece, so 75$ for approx. 4 inches of fish... Let's...

    Former Newbie's African Cichlid Experience

Big changes, I traded in all my fry (except the newest batch of OBP) along with the ice blue zebra, white tail acei, female hybrid, and scruffy male peacock. Add the plants and fish together and I recieve 63$ in store credit. I was only expecting 30 at the most ;) I picked up another OB peacock...

    filtration

That depends on the stock of the tank. If the tank is full of messy fish (live bearers, goldies, Africans etc) then you should over filter the tank. If it's just low bioload fish then a filter rated for your tank size should be enough. You should also look into what type of flow your stock...

    Female betta?

100% male. Look at the pelvic fins, see how they are full, long and have white tips? I've yet to see a female with such full and white tipped pelvic fins. It is not uncommon to get the wrong gender than what you'd expect. I had it happen twice with "baby bettas" at Petco, which was completely...
