They were probably referring to wild bettas, they can live together. The aggression was bred out for people to bet on. But I don't think that domesticated \bettas can, just my opinion, I don't know what @Crispii thinks though.

Did you get her from a lfs or online. If lfs, she's probably pretty young and that is a pretty good size for a newly bought one from the fish store. But once they get older they'll get much bigger ime.
One of my lemon tetras, they are such boisterous eaters, especially in a smaller tank. I've had them for a year I believe. They're in the same tank with my angels so I call it the "Sweet & Sour Tank." Love these fish, I want to get more color on them, in time.
I actually believe some fish can live in smaller than 5 gallons. It has been done by many, but you just have to pick the right ones, examples: scarlet badis, some killis, or maybe some brigittae rasboras.

Did you stir the detritus or anything before it started clouding up? If so, it's probably detritus, though I don't think it would stay suspended that long.
Though maybe if your filters spilled some stuff out, I've done that a couple times and it takes a bit to clear.
